Another question is why are there so many weak male talents in the industry and why are they getting so much work. Johnny Castle is a substandard performer and is in Naughty America updates on a daily basis. Keiran Lee has an exclusive and high paying contract with Brazzers. Billy Glide and Mr. Pete are just awful performers but they're all over the industry. It boggles the mind.

I've been wondering the same thing. Chris Strokes is an really awful performer yet he keeps showing up everywhere, and lately has been dominating Bang Bros and releases from Jules Jordan. Why are companies relying so heavily on guys like him? I don't get it.

I just don't think that studios get it, with how seriously fed up so many of us are with so many of the current crop of male performers

Simple answer: Because not everyone has the same opinion as you.
More complicated answer: To use Castle and Naughty America as an example, they let you rate the guy and the girl for every single scene on their site. And NA has used the majority of male performers that you would have ever heard of. And he has the second highest rating of any guy on their site, which is higher than whomever else you think is a better performer than him except for one person. I'm sure that when it comes to Keiran Lee and Brazzers, you can say the same thing. So just because you think certain male talent is weak doesn't mean your opinion is a very popular one.
Edit: And all of that is ignoring the opinions of the actual female performers of the guys.

Because there are probably less then 100 men on the planet at any given time who can do the job of a male pornstar. Guys who think it's an easy job and that anyone can do it have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. The degree of difficulty that is inherent in the job is off the fucking charts. Speaking for myself, if I knew that in five minutes I had to fuck, say, both London Keyes and Asa Akira in front of a room full of people, and not only did I have to fuck them but fuck them really, really well? I would puke and pass out from being so nervous. Being a male pornstar, to me, is probably as difficult as being a top-notch mma fighter.

To the last few who have posted about "substandard" and "awful" male performers:
What exactly is so substandard and awful about them? What male performers aren't substandard and awful in your opinion?
There's a few male performers whose mannerisms are annoying but I don't think they're awful performers. Personally I find it odd the way some of you carry on about the guys.

Valid arguments Ghost tho I still think the guys that I mentioned are crap and so do friends who watch porn. I admit I couldn't do what they do, performing in front of a group of people. Just, to me the men I mentioned are weak performers and I don't watch their scenes no matter how much I like the girl in the scene. Honestly I don't pay much attention to the male talent unless the girl involved looks bored or uncomftorable. I've seen this more often than not with the men I mentioned.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe the girl looks bored because she's just not an overly energetic performer in general? Some girls are just more demonstrative than others.
Also, the girls are paid to act, not just fuck. The notion that girls look more bored with certain guys (the ones you mentioned) and less so with other guys just doesn't add up and is a theory you've convinced yourself to be a fact for some reason. If you want to believe it, more power to you, I'm just saying there's no logic in it.

^I know what I see on my television/computer screen. I haven't "convinced" myself of anything. The logic is girls I like, who usually turn in high energy exciting scenes have not when involved with these men. I appreciate the fact that we all have opinions and those opinions differ but I found it just a little insulting that you said I was trying to convince myself that something was there when it wasn't. This is a pattern I've noticed for quiet a while.

And be judged for it in many a porn forums on many different perspectives , did you make Asa cum? Did you end the scene after no less than 30 minutes? Why did you fuck London for more time than Asa? Why did you fuck Asa for more time than London?
Why you didn't have mor cum?
you know crap like that

And, yet, there are those that consistently do it well, and those that consistently don't.
Can't we find newer studs to replace the tired, lame, old, misogynistic, out-of-shape, prison-tattooed, limp-dicked, weak-cumshot guys that are hanging-on (because it's "so difficult" to find guys that can "do it in front of a room full of people")?
Well, bullshit!
I'm sure that -- somewhere on this entire planet -- there are 20 potential new male performers out there who can more than cut it in front of the camera -- if the studios and directors would only give them a chance.
Yes, I've heard and know all the economic arguments as to why they can't do this
Well, some of us are trying to give them a new economic argument:
We're not going to continue buying and settling for the same-old-same-old crap, with the C-list studs!
Fact is, most of the perennial studs (including the ones that should be put out to pasture), and the studio heads and directors, are a small group who has been working together in the industry for quite a while. They have fallen into a comfort-zone rut that is difficult to navigate your way out of -- for anybody, not just porn folk.

I see your point ,actually there's plenty of porn stud I don't like , many of them in my view completely ruin the scene being barely able to get a wood to the point the scenes with the girl screaming in pleasure looks like a mockery to the paying customer, I also don't like those who slap the girl constantly , my personal solution is to avoid them whenever possible , almost always actually

I agree. it is very difficult job. sort of like making a pro sports team. very few can do it. I know if I showed up on set with Anikka Albrite, Alison Star, Brookyln Chase, etc and I knew I had to bang her really well in front of camera's and a room full of people, it wouldn't be easy.

You would think so, but I've seen nothing over the years that leads me to believe there are always 20 or more guys standing in line waiting to sign up. There are plenty of talent agencies out there. I've seen more than a few, who have been signed, receive little to no work. I think most of the women simply prefer experienced guys, as do most directors.
New performers can become old performers pretty quickly in the porn business. Some of the smaller companies do give newer guys a chance at times, but you'll rarely see it with the bigger companies in the beginning of their careers. Best I can tell, males literally have to work their way up the porn food chain.

Several years ago, I had several conversations online with a guy who had been a part of the scene in the Golden Era, and was in several features back in the mid 1970s when a lot of movies were still made in New York City. From his descriptions, I can see why it may be difficult, even intimidating, for a youngish male to perform. Back in 1975 this guy was in his mid-late 20s, and by answering an ad, he ended up doing some one on one scenes for those old peepshow loops. He said those were pretty simple, it was him, the girl, and one or sometimes two guys with a camera, and handling any lighting. He had done a dozen or so of these when he was asked to be in a feature film. He recalled his scene was with two older broads (his first time with two) and that after the "acting" part of the scene came the sex acts part. He told me it was the number of people cramped into the room that was surprising, the director, his assistant, another helper, two camera guys, one guy holding a light and another a boom mike. All these guys were middle-aged guys, all dressed, the two women he was fucking were both in typical 70s garb - corsets, garters, stockings, high heels, teddies, crotchless panties...and he said he felt very naked, because he was. The scene went ok according to him, but the director wanted the popshot to occur while the one broad was riding his reverse cowgirl and the second was between his legs fondling his balls, and she would pull his cock out and stroke it off for the pop. He told me that this was a first for him, and he remembers looking at all these guys waiting for it to happen. He was also told by the director not to make too many sounds or thrusts while she is stroking his cock after he cums, even though he may be sensitive. He told me somehow he got through it and managed to pop nicely, but the one broad kept stroking his sensitive cock but he managed not to do anything to the directors disapproval. He later told me he did probably another 20 to 30 features, and that this cumshot positioning was fairly common then. I asked him about "friendly fire" cumshots, if he ever got splashed, and he said more than he could stand to count. He said after that first scene, he got very comfortable in front of the camera, and with just about anything he was asked to do.
I imagine I would be intimidated to with 8 to 10 guys staring at me while I was trying to cum. I don't think sets are that busy now (unless its a European feature by Private maybe), usually its just the director/camera guy, another camera guy and a light guy/runner? Maybe one other dude. That's still a lot for a newbie to handle. Now imagine he has to dp or do double vag or double anal. I think it takes a certain kind of guy to handle all this. That is why they get a lot of respect in my book...and yes the mopes too.

I'd also like to hear some reasons why some people here think certain performers are so awful. Since I started coming to this site I've heard many people claim how horrible certain performers are and I very rarely hear why other than just a blanket statement saying their supposedly so bad. Other than someone like Westly Pipes who many claim they don't like him talking so much, I hardly hear any reasons why people claim to hate certain performers so much.
While I can certainly understand why some enjoy certain male performers more than others I don't get why so many people here claim to refuse to watch scenes with certain pornstars based on performance. For me personally there are a few male performers I don't like because I find them tooo distracting to watch because of their appearance. For example I don't like watching Ron Jeremy because the way he looks is just so distracting and odd it's hard for me to get past it. Same with Spyder Jones. But as much as I didn't like watching Spyder me wanting to wach Tera Patrick (or Lupe Fuentes) was stronger so I put up with it.
But performance wise, other than a few stand outs I don't see a big difference in the majority of the guys out there. And I think many times it depends on the director/studio. The way guys fuck in an EVIL ANGEL production is going to be different than what they do in a BANG BROS or VIVID movie. The Lex we see in a JULES JORDAN movie isn't the same Lex Steele performance we see in a DOGFART production. Manuel Ferrara doing EVEIL ANGEL stuff isn't like his performances at DIGITAL PLAYGROUND.

I've mentioned on this board I think Bruce Venture looks cromagnon with his mouth constantly agape. I've also mentioned Rico Strong has titties and should acquaint himself with a gym. Tony Rubino of Bang Bros appears to be channeling Seth Green's character from "Can't Hardly Wait." That said, I would never refer to them as substandard talents as the esteemed posters in this thread do, not about these guys specifically but about any of the current crop of male stars.
I challenged them to give specific reasons as to why they feel current male stars are substandard and also to provide examples of those who are actually up to par in their minds. They declined to respond. I'm concluding these posters are simply "haters" (yeah, I went there all high school and shit but the term fits in this case).
Of all the comments so far, here's the one that made me ask WTF the loudest:
"Can't we find newer studs to replace the tired, lame, old, misogynistic, out-of-shape, prison-tattooed, limp-dicked, weak-cumshot guys that are hanging-on (because it's "so difficult" to find guys that can "do it in front of a room full of people")?"
I'd hardly put Venture, Johnny Sinns, or Johnny Castle in any of those categories and they're three of the busiest guys in the business these days as far as number of scenes shot.

I haven't responded because I didn't see your post until this moment. Johnny Sins, Bill Bailey, Kurt Lockwood (sp?) and Danny Wylde immediately come to mind when I think of guys who are "up to par." There's others but I can't think of their names right off hand because, as I said before, I don't pay much attention to the male talent if they are doing a good job and their female costar appears to be enjoying herself.
When a woman isn't enjoying herself and looks bored or the man stops too many times in the scene especially when he's finding a good rythm (for example the way one of the guys I don't like will fuck a girl for 20 seconds, pull out and spank her pussy for five minutes..then repeat the entire scene) or just tries to take over the scene and make it about him instead of the woman, these are the reasons I don't like a male performer. Or the ever present problem of keeping wood.
I spend money to watch porn I enjoy, I don't enjoy stuff these male performers are featured in. I feel like they ruin a scene and question how they get so much work when they are...and this is the important thing here...in MY opinion..weak performers. This is a thread about male talent. I decided to post my query here.

^ I think it is best to avoid naming names, good or bad.
I described what I find annoying.
Any stud can have an off day, but there are guys that just can't cut it anymore -- and they are still in heavy use.
And, about a stud's "off day"...
Why does the off day wind-up on the final DVD?
At least edit out the worst parts.
Case in point:
I recently bought Fresh Outta High School #22 featuring Allie James.
Allie's cover shot, doing cowgirl with her stud, looks so fucking hot, I had to have it!
In the scene, however, the stud can't keep it up.
During the main blowjob, the stud completely loses his erection, to the point of being a wet noodle, before the scene moves on.
Why was this not edited out?
Why didn't they take a break and give the stud a chance to perform the BJ section again?
Probably because he was having wood problems the entire time
When he finally gets it hard enough to perform the facial cumshot, he blows the first load completely past Allie's face (not an excited shot that flies over her head, rather a seemingly deliberate bad aim).
Now, I realize Digital Sin had time and money invested in the shoot.
And, of course, they wanted to feature current ascendent hottie Allie James on the cover.
So, I pay $19.95, as it is a current title (part of a $500+ order of physical DVDs, by the way), and get stuck with inferior product.
Major studios shouldn't pull this shit!
Now, this stud isn't on my shit list yet (i.e. for one bad scene).
In fact, it's entirely the studio's fault for releasing the scene in the first place.
Back to the studs...
What I expect is a stud who can get it up, keep it up, blow a decent load, hit the target and keep his mouth shut.
Now, I'm a guy, and I know that it doesn't always work out this way
BUT -- when I'm paying good money for product -- the customer is entitled to a certain minimal standard!
Certainly, from major studios!
I'll rant more later.

Thanks for the advice!
That's because he is , just like me or you, Cro-Magnon was a name given to some fossils of modern men maybe you intended Neanderthals , well that would be possible too , apparently from genetics researches Caucasians and Asians share from 1% to 4% of genes from Neanderthal's , including Native Australians.
It's the latest theory about their extinction , they actually did not extinct they merged with modern men, us.

I find myself spending less and less money on porn each year, mainly because of the male talent pool.
And I agree totally with what Goldstein was speaking of. My example is Jonni Darkko's Bikini Clad Cum Sluts #2. I posted a quick review of the movie in his thread. For me, two of the scenes were a no watch because of the presence of John Strong, but my bigger problems were the Bruce Venture wood problems and the highly edited scene with Mark Ashley, who was one of the better "performers" throughout his career.
The decision by Darkko to include the two scenes on the release, and ask customers/fans to pay for it, is disappoining. As I mentioned in the review I luckily only rented this title. Since then Darkko has releasd 9 titles, of which I have paid for one.
The industry is clearly hurting because of the tubes, but they have not reacted in a way to improve the product to entice people to continue to pay for their porn. Releasing scenes that should have been put in the trash bin and using male performers that turn off many fans isn't helping.

Is there any male performer that doesn't turn off many fans?
Also, what is the basis for assuming that producers can afford to eat the cost of a scene?

They can choose to eat it or choose to ask fans to pay for it. No doubt it is their choice.
It is also my choice as a fan/consumer to no longer give my porn $$$ to a producer/director/studio for doing so.

^ Ya know, Bruce Venture also seems to be the stud in my Allie James' scene example.
Looks like I'll have to add him to my "watch list" (not an honorary "shit list" stud, just yet)
Kind of disappointing that the review, I've linked to here ^, makes no mention of the wood issues.
In fact, none of the four reviews linked to here mention the wood issues either
Is poor male performance just a fact-of-life now?

@Goldstein I know the scene/performer you're talking about. Sadly I've seen many a scene he's done that ended up the same way that one did and he is on my 'don't watch/buy - EVER' list. Dudes talk ALL the time about male performers with 'wood problems' but tbh I am not nearly as critical as most. Actually I kind of breathe a sigh of relief when I see a dude is not completely hard for the entire 30-40 minutes of a scene from the moment he drops his pants, cause that means he's probably not on viagra or something like pretty much all the top performers are. I respect that. HOWEVER. There's a difference in struggling for a few seconds at the beginning of the scene or taking a break mid-scene to jerk it back to full staff while eating the girl out or fingering her or something and not being able to get hard long enough to keep the pace of the scene up. When it's the latter it makes the scene unwatchable.
The thing is though....there's A LOT of porn out there. You can put guys you don't like on your no-watch list and still have a ton of porn to watch. People just need to stop getting upset cause they don't get to have 20 scenes of their favorite female performer working with the 2-3 guys they deem good performers. So you have 10 scenes instead of 20 to watch, is it really that big a deal that you have to whine about it on the internet non-stop?? idk I've done my fair share of complaining about male talent on here but some people are being way too dramatic imo.

Is there some "basis" for assuming that the fans should eat the cost of producer's fails?
What some of us here are trying to get across is that, "we're mad as hell, and aren't going to pay for this anymore."
Industry, you've been put on notice: Clean-up your act, or fold-up your tents.
I'm a porn-lover, dammit!

I have NOT been "whining about it... non-stop."
Get a grip.
It has come up here in this thread, and we are discussing it.
My point -- and especially because I still buy physical DVDs (in addition to downloads) -- is that I don't like getting stuck with crap.
And, I make an effort to preview and read reviews on virtually everything I purchase.

You have to know your reviewer. The first review you linked too was from Captain Jack, who gives all the movies he reviews 4 or 5 stars.
Same goes for the 2 reviews of Bikini-Clad Cum Sluts 2 here on ADT. Both of those guys rate almost every movie well. And why wouldn't they? They review a ton of movies, and get them for free. Why would they be critical and risk getting cut off from their stream of free porn?

WHAT???
Rosco Fuji is rating almost every movie pretty bad, at least from what I have seen. He is very negative about most movies. So it's the other way around with him.
(Maybe I always caught only his reviews from phases when he was in a bad mood...but that's my impression, and thats what I expect from a Rosco Fuji review)

Calm down I wasn't referring to you, if you read my post correctly, in the first paragraph I was AGREEING with what you said. I started a new paragraph, therefore starting a new thought that wasn't related to any of your posts. There ARE posters on this board who spend all their time on here whining about male performers, in every thread they post on. I was talking about them.

^ To use ADT as the gold standard of movie reviews when it comes to a purchase decision is ridiculous; most but not all reviewers give out 4 or 5 star reviews for a reason. A heavy consumer of porn should realize this. It also lends weight to the argument that buying full movies is a poor investment compared to paying per scene.
I wonder if some posters here consume so much porn that they've become jaded to the girls and now have to focus on the guys. If this is the case it's kind of scary to me. Mike made a good point in that if a guy isn't fully hard the entire time it lends a sense of realism and legitimacy to the scene. Is seeing the same couch in different scenes next on the gripe list? Or perhaps the color of the walls just isn't working for them?
Final thought: Does anyone else find calling a male pornstar a "stud" a bit creepy? Then again, I can't stand it when broadcasters call the latest first-round draft pick a stud either...

You are right. I got my reviewers mixed up, kind of, with fu_q. There was a time there that they were reviewing a ton of Vivid movies, and Howard Levine/Hollywood Woody was the source of the freebies. Howard would then post links on this board saying "hey, look at this great review" everyone. Howard even started a thread Vivids Latest reviews on ADT in which we went back and forth on this topic. Last year Rosco posted in the Darkko thread, asking for a free screener of Bikini-Clad Cum Sluts #2. I called him out for it right below, and then he came in a few days later and edited out his post. Then shortly after a glowing review was posted, without even a mention of the wood problems. It was his first review of a Darkko movie.
My point was that not all reviewers are out to objectively review a movie.

I have reviewed Vivid movies that were sent as screeners (either from ADT or, back in the day, their distributor), and I have reviewed Vivid movies that are from my own personally-purchased collection. I have, over the years, really liked Vivid's movies. I have large numbers of them on VHS, in fact...and my first review here was of a Vivid Sunny Leone movie, which I purchased myself -- 4.5 stars, if I recall correctly.
These days, I do a lot of my reviewing of Wicked and Digital Playground movies...for which I am personally paying via website subscriptions. I also get an occasional screener from a company (fairly rare and when they reach out to me) and some from ADT's list (which I choose).
If you take a look at my reviews, in general, you'll find that the Vivid reviews, the Wicked reviews, the Digital Playground reviews, and pretty much all of the reviews are fairly consistent with one another and what I look for. They're also fairly consistent--when comparisons are possible--with what the bigger-name / bigger-volume reviewers are putting out (title-for-title).
Note that this is all the same whether I get a screener from ADT or a company...or whether I purchase the material myself (one way or the other).
I really have no problem standing by my reviews (all of them) b/c, believe it or not, I spend a lot of time thinking about what I put out there. Sometimes I think, in retrospect, that I could have gone a half-star higher or lower on some of them...after the initial impact of having watched the movie has worn off...but what I've put out there is a very good indication of my true feelings.
You don't see a lot of negative reviews from me for a couple of reasons:
(a) I usually choose / buy / etc. things that I'm likely to enjoy. My tolerance for bad porn is fairly low.
(b) I don't have a lot of time, so I can't churn out the volume that a lot of the other reviewers do. I don't wish to waste my time on titles that I'm unlikely to enjoy. Perhaps this is a "flaw" in my reviewing. Perhaps I'm not casting a wide enough net. It is what it is.
In terms of the movies themselves, I like a different style of porn than many here do. I like the stuff with plots (even cheesy ones), and I don't need the hardcore ass-banging and spitting, etc. (...not that I mind it, of course...). I basically "grew up on" Vivid, VCA, Caballero, and Wicked. Digital was a welcomed later addition to the game but is in a similar style. The Elegant Angel titles and the Evil Angel titles--which are harder--were more expensive when I was younger, so I had less exposure to their brand of porn. I like them, too, of course.
Also, the bulk of big-volume reviewers here are almost certainly receiving screeners from the companies and / or ADT. This is simply how it works. There is no secret conspiracy involved. I'm fairly certain that it's common knowledge...and the same on every major review site.
Do take the time to compare my reviews over the years, if you feel the desire. You'll see that they're all essentially self-consistent. (I suppose that experience has made me a bit wiser, so you may see a general shift over time...but this should be evidenced in all of the titles, not just Vivid.)
Yes. I give less bad reviews than others. But, this is the case whether I'm paying or getting something for free. It's more a function of being picky than anything else...and, perhaps, an inherent love of the genre. I really love porn...especially porn with beautiful women, fun plots, and from directors like B. Skow, Brad Armstrong, Paul Thomas, David Stanley, Axel Braun, and Robby D. Perhaps we just have a different point of view.
(As a note -- Just remembered something. Take a look at my "SunLust" reviews. You'll find the comments on the production values for many of them quite less-than-stellar. Those came in the same shipments as the Vivid titles whose reviews of mine you're unhappy with.)
*I guess that I'll leave this with a simple question to be pondered: Why on Earth would someone worry about having a stream of free porn cut-off if the free porn were shit...especially if one were responsible for watching and reviewing it all?
Best,
fu_q
PS -- I actually asked that the Vivid shipments stop coming to me b/c I couldn't keep up with them. It kind of sucked b/c I loved their product...but I only have so much time.

Nobody requires you to buy the product, so 'should' doesn't enter into it. If you dislike spending money sight unseen then try reading a few reviews, or rent first, Goldstein. It works for me.
Furthermore, it would be folly to assume that just because I think a scene fails to work means that every other porn consumer will think the same.

no offense to reviewers, but I never depend on reviews to tell me what I'm gonna like. Especially when the majority of adult industry reviews are simply a list of the sex positions followed by one or two sentences of what they liked about the scene, or else the reviewer is so clearly biased and arrogant in his opinions it has no credibility for me (like donhouston or whoever on xcritic). I guess for me I just find what I like, whether that be certain companies or performers, and stick to that.

Sorry I missed this but excuse me?
Read some of my reviews, I just gave one this weekend 3 stars. I've given DVD's 1 1/2 stars before. I have stated to porn companies that they can send me movies but I'm going to be honest with them. If I don't like something I will say so.
If you're going to make a blanket statement, you should at least do some research first.
