Yes, they have, much like the real movie biz that I was once associated with. I say this not to bring any "film history scholars" down on my head.

Instead, I mention the comparison because the problems are very similar, what with formerly reliable actors going on ego trips, and recently popular actresses thinking it's their right to ignore the starting time of any given shoot.

The consistent level of professionalism that you mention is held by very few in any kind of movie arena. And expalining that fact is not as easy as just blaming everything on getting a sudden financial access to huge amounts of drugs or booze.

For instance, industry insiders have told me that Mr. Tom Byron has done his share of partying in his life, yet accomplished that amazing 20 year-plus record in the adult biz, easily qualifying as a hall of famer.

Not being a flake, then, is obviously more than a mere question of outside influences. Rather it's a matter of having a strong personal character.

I know that's a strange term for many to see associated with the adult biz, but that does seem to be the case.

I'd add this: Porn stars, like mainstream actors, are "public performers" -- not "professionals" (although any of them theoretically can, and some actually do, approach their performing career(s) with a professional attitude ).

The majority of people -- most of whom dependably work regular hours and need to in order to survive -- do not have the temperament necessary to be public performers of any kind. The kind of eccentric and spontaneous temperament that it takes to perform publicly is usually not consistent with the even, steady, reliable temperament of the 9 to 5 (or longer) "professional" type. This isn't a knock on performers (9 to 5 is no deity); nor is it an excuse for their irresponsibility (which has it own un-rewards ) -- but facts are facts.

You can't expect a flying bird to swim like a fish, even though you will occasionally run across the odd duck.

While I can't claim to have hung out at basketball games with any Speilberg types, I did anonymously labor for a time in the script department vineyards of a mainstream studio.

That's hardly any huge credential, but it was at least enough to aquaint me with the day to day grind of things, and how many types of people behave when put under the pressures of performing.

Exactly. In fact, I would strongly recommend a "training camp for nerves" before anyone - male or female - signs up to drop their drawers on cue for the cameras.

This short duration training would simply include being made to show up on time to gigs and act professionally at them - playing in a local band, or if not musically inclined, doing some standup comedy at an open mike night somewhere.

Many longtime female porn queens also worked as groovy singers. And did you ever notice how porn career all-stars like John Leslie and Tom Byron show great musical disipline, and likewise guys like Ron Jeremy have developed excellent comedy timing?

This element, when coupled with their longevity, is no fluke. After having to perform for some fairly large crowds for awhile, working later in the porn biz in front of a few measly crew workers would seem like being on vacation by comparison.

Very well put. Any public performance - whether it be singing, stripping or screwing - takes a special temperment that can guide one past the hurdles that hold most other people back. But if that temperment isn't there to be developed in the first place, then don't quit your day jobs, folks.

For instance, if a girl can always show up on time and is willing and able to have wild sex with three guys (and get herself off on camera, too) without popping a handful of caffeine pills, snorting some stepped-on coke and downing a couple of Coronas first, then she's already on the right page with the right attitude.
