Couples porn has always be one of the marketing slogans used by the industry in an attempt to become mainstream. One of the reasons it hasn't worked is that women remain suspicious of the motivation. I'll explain why.

If a guy shows his sweetheart a couples porn film that contains male-female and female-female, the lady asks herself why there isn't male-male in it as well - in fact, any fair-minded person would ask this question. Inevitably, the lady concludes that her partner is trying to align her fantasy with his, to get her to see things that he himself fantasizes about (eg female-female). Overall, it's a recipe for more suspicion in a relationship.

My solution: include male-male in the mix or delete the female-female. My personal view is that there is a whole couples genre waiting to be established with male-female, female-female, and male-male - all in the same movie. Fair and democratic porn is what I'd call it.

A huge part of couples porn revenue is cable sales (domestic & foreign, Germany apparently being a huge market). According to Robert Lombard, that's because of foreign sales and the demands of foreign buyers that there's no interracial in softcore movies, and I'll guess that's the same logic behind couples porn. It remains to be seen if those same buyers would be open to male/male sex, but I highly doubt it.

I think you're wrong there. As I see it, this is the evolution of porn. Actually it's not only the evolution of porn, but society in general. Look around you, the change is undergoing as we speak. If you fall behind, you are the dying breed.

What about threesomes? Do women fantasize about that? I would doubt it.

Well, a lot of women fantasies about seeing two men having sex, or seeing their boyfriend getting fucked by another man. I'm not saying that's the only thing on their mind, but I've talked it over with some of my female friends and they confirmed this!

I find it strange that there even are female-female scenes in couples porn. How did it end up there? I would scratch that off the list.

But do these women fantasize about having sex with two men? Or a man and another woman? That's what I'm wondering.

That's an interesting thing because I have always fantasized about a menage a tois in the traditional French meaning: A woman, her husband and HER lover. Obviously, it depended on the woman's preference whether her lover was male or female.

In my case, the third would always be another male, and I would hope for interaction between my lover and my "husband." (Not being married, I use that trm to mean SO.)

The girl-girl thing seems to be more about women are less likely to be turned off by things that might not necessarily float their boat than men are.

While some women would be fine with a girl-girl fantasy, even the ones that have no interest in it will probably watch it. At least it's "pretty."

Don't believe me? I have watched perfectly straight women sit in a strip club and watch chiks take their clothes off and be fine with it. But ask a perfectly straight guy to go to a strip club and watch MEN take their clothes off and he'll find so many ways to get out of it that your head will spin. Check it out when the LA Men dance at Erotica LA. It answers a lot of questions.LOL

LadyB,

You make a lot of sense. Thanks for your insight, I appreciate it.

I'm a man myself and have mixed with straights, gays and bi's in my social life. My view is that, when it comes to sex, straight men are the kings of double standards. For example, they expect a woman to make out with another woman but recoil from the very notion of male-male interactions. Throw an image of an attractive man at them and they start to squirm, and yet they have no qualms about throwing images of naked and half-naked women at women.

But it wasn't always like that. In the old days, on an island called Lesbos, there lived woman that were cast-outs from society for making love to other women, whilst male-male relations were perfectly ok.

Reuptake,

Notice how in today's age, it's politically correct for straight men to brag about how much they like girl-girl but it's not politically correct for straight women to brag about how they like male-male. It's a double standard that's being driven by the straight porn industry.

My personal view is that couples porn is a figment of the imagination. Go to the lukeford.com website, in the subject section F for Fem Porn, for a thorough discussion of the topic. Two excerpts:

"Fem porn. Those two words in a 100,00 word book on porn are about as much coverage that the genre earns through sales. But in these PC times, one must waste space to deal with myths."

"Historically limited to one half of the population, some pornographers seek the Holy Grail of "couples porn", a mythical form of sexually explicit entertainment that attracts women as much as men. That it doesn't exist doesn't stop those with an agenda from seeking it out."

A very interesting article from someone with intimate knowledge of the porn industry.

I think the main reason you don't see any real man on man stuff in "couples" titles is because some cable distributors would also have a problem with it. It was stated earlier that cable distribution is a huge market for couples companies, so they have to catter to that more and more (such as limited to no violence, tamer sex). Also, I don't think that there are many male actors in straight porn who would be up to performing with another man, unless they had done gay for pay in the past (I am pretty sure that Peter North was Matt Ramsey, so he could be one of the few who would come to mind, but no recent ones).

Plus, in the market today, if a film that is majority straight features any male to male activity it usually gets bumped to the bi market, and a lot of cable companies won't touch that.

Three things that have probably contributed to couples porn being shit and/or not selling:

#1 - Condoms

#2 - Lack of decent looking guys (the ladies need something to look at too)

#3 - The money these days is in owning your own movies and having someone distribute for you. The companies that make couples porn tend not to offer this option to their directors, some of the gonzo companies do.

To Mike South : it's always nice to have an inside view in this message board. It certainly is less to be treated of morons. Most people here are immune to the intricacies of porn as an industry and respond with their heart. As fans, or morons, if you may. Which certainly makes for great fodder. There's a saying that goes, if you have nothing nice to say... Believe it or not, there's a way to disagree with people other than in insulting them. If you think this discussion is stupid, I would suggest you simply ignore it, the way I do with all the double anal threads. Thanks.

in this case I'd rather be called a moron then have someone try to convince me that the reason couples porn sucks is that there isn't enough male-male interaction. are you kidding me if that's your brillant solution there I'd like to next hear how you'll create world peace and cure hunger for millions.

Double Anal . Or is that just "male-male interaction" by another name ?

Perhaps a better title for this thread would be "How I think couple's porn could be improved" or even "Where couple's porn has gone wrong , in my opinion ." Personally I'd like to see far less g/g in features (as it mostly sucks anyway) and more 1on1 b/g stuff . And from my experience lipstick lesbian scenes do aggravate any potential female audience .

If the cable companies won't touch bi or gay male stuff, then I believe a case of discrimination could be brought against them. If there is any public element to the way cable companies operate, then they are obliged to follow the law in the state in which they are operating. There are 15 states in the USA that prohibit discrimination.

Refusing to sell a product to a person because of their orientation or race is discrimination. Not stocking a product because there's little or no demand for it is simply good business sense.

Although I'd love to see somebody like Wicked or Digital Playground do a bi couples movie, I think the bigger problem is that so many couples movies "talk down" to their audience. Look at Nicholas Steele's movies such as Rawhide or Dinner Party 3 . Yes, they're beautiful, but that the same time they almost feel afraid of the sex that's going on. The main problem to me with couples movies is the feeling that the sex has to be softened down so much to be palatable to couples (by which most studios seem to mean, women). I don't think couples movies need double anals, and even DPs can be a rare thing, but I think that when couples are shown passionate sex they can handle it being a little harder here and there. The threesomes can work, but a little effort to make them fit works, such as in Michael Raven's Lovestruck where he has Ava Vincent and Wendy Divine taking on Kurt Lockwood as part of their experimenting on spring break. It works to set things up, there's chemistry, and the camera work didn't make it feel like somebody was afraid of sex.

I am probably more annoyed by sex films that seem "afraid of sex" than anything else. A lot of gonzo certainly falls into this catagory, but plenty of feature work seems sexophobic as well.

I don't think I'm afraid of sex, but I'm deathly afraid of bad filmmaking. Trying to strike a balance between being able to see the giblit without the camera work becoming stilted is a delicate and often frustrating challenge.

Ignoring that the second sentence hasn't entered this world fully formed , this is interesting stuff . What exactly is it that we know about women's fantasies which destroys the idea behind story based porn ? The women I've watched (or talked about) porn with almost all enjoyed the reason behind the fucking as much/more than the sex itself . And yes , I know , most viewers are (lone) men .

I think Astro has hit pretty close to the mark. To my wife it is all about 1) the believability of the set-up 2) the chemistry not necessarily only between performers but also between characters 3)the tone of "love and "tenderness" in the scene.

IMHO:
Marketing and PPV/cable aside. I think "couples porn" (as so labeled) tends to falsely equate soft sex in action with love and tenderness in emotion. That's why it often will fall flat with women. Often a good hard screwing with a lot of passion and physical adoration between characters is the real ticket. And nothing turns my wife off faster than "Lipstick Lesbian."

To return to Arthur's initial suggestion. I think that a feature with either only b/g or equal parts b/g, g/g, and b/b will have a better likelyhood of actually appealing to the wider female audiance, but the action should be equal partners with the emotion.

To add to this discussion we should ask what makes the popular (or long-standing) mainstream romance movies popular, and then what would it take to instill those qualities into a sexually explicit film?

Ha-ha, well put! I think I didn't make myself clear enough.
What I was trying to say was that bisexuality has/and is becoming more and more mainstream. Not only in porn, but in general. I can point to clothes commercials, portrayed as two guys kissing, male Celebes that copy the britney/madonna kiss, and so on, and so on. I'm not saying, we will all wake up one morning, lusting each other. But as I see it, more and more boundaries will be disappear! Can you really disagree with this, even if you don't like it?

Most of my straight friends are gay-curious, and if you look at a current thread in Gay DVD Talk, some straight members of ADT are too. I think the idea to incorporate one m/m or one m/m/f in couples porn is sound, but once again I doubt it could work in terms of foreign and cable sales. Producers would have to take the risk. By the way, in "Pink Prison", a Katja Kean vehicle produced by Lars Von Trier, the movie begins with male masturbation and a simulated m/m. The movie has never been distributed in the US (as far as I know).

Hi everyone,

It's funny how a thread can get away from you. Name-calling aside, I've really enjoyed reading everyone's comments, and I think you ALL have made some very valid points.

I try to chart the mainstreaming of adult film by contrasting/comparing it to the mainstreaming of adult literature. In the 60's, a thriving pornographic paperback industry had a fairly large selection in pretty much every major urban bookstore, -- much larger, I suspect, than you'll find today. When extreme adult content began appearing in "mainstream," mass-market, brand-author paperbacks, there was more comment over the use of street language than the description of specific sex acts. Just as twenty-five years ago, every adventure movie and crime film wasn't speckled with the language working men and women use in real life. (Go back and look at Steve McQueen's "Bullitt" -- one of the best films of the 60's -- and see how the movie saves its one expletive for one of the show's final scenes.)

Before 1968, the word "fuck" or "shit" in a book literally made it illegal in some people's minds. And a whole population of people really felt that any reference to the previsions in a public document was immoral. Such things were so powerful that to name them was to spread them. Ignorance, they felt was the only protection. Between Stonewall (in 1969) and the advent of AIDS came a twelve year period when men and women - both straight and gay - began to make various sides of their lives known to each other and to a wide range of American readers.

Adult films and video have been a part of this process. Chloe Sevigny, an Oscar-nominated actress for "Boys Don't Cry," became a part of this process when she performed hardcore fellatio on Vincent Gallo in his mainstream film "The Brown Bunny." And I believe this process will continue, blurring the line between adult and mainstream film, just as the line was successfuly blurred in literature some years ago.

Thanks,

IMO the so-called "couples porn" is made primarily for single men who aren't interested in gonzo porn.
Otherwise there wouldn't be so many male-female-female threesomes or lesbian scenes in "couples porn" because bisexual women are a minority. "Couples porn" which shows female bisexuality would be marketed as bisexual porn. The camera would not focus on showing the girl. The dvd covers would show couples instead of single girls...

I just love it when people, male or female like to make broad and sweeping statements like this about "what women like" or "what men like", though it's especially entertaining when a single member of one gender is presumptuous to think they can speak for all members of the opposite gender.

Here's a free hint, it's not making you look either big nor clever and it only hurts your argument in general.

Ok, i don't have statistics concerning the consumers of "couples porn".
But do you think all women are bisexual? If "couples porn" is geared towards women, why is "couples porn" which shows female bisexuality marketed as "straight porn"? The marketing says a lot about the target group.

I made ONE generalzation in my previous post: women care about male looks. If "couples porn" is geared towards women, the dvd covers would show the male actors, too.

I didn't say that there aren't women who like porn. I said that "couples porn" is made PRIMARILY for men.

I know that dumblonde, renee... watch porn. But i also know that dumblonde complained about too much girl-girl and the looks of the male actors.

Maybe SOME couples watch "couples porn" but i doubt that women enjoy it. Maybe they watch it because it makes their partners horny and thus means better sex. Some couples go to strip clubs... If "couples porn" gets the female viewers off, single women would watch it, too.

The inference from your quote there is clearly that women don't watch "couples" porn, and that those who do, do so under some kind of duress or coersion.

Because, obviously, you know what all women are thinking and feeling and their motivations?

respect,

You make a lot of sense.

It bears repeating that couples porn is skewed towards male heterosexual fantasies and pays scant attention to what a woman might like to see. For instance, a couples porn film from the straight porn industry still won't show male-male interactions even if the woman, like many women, likes to watch it.
