Just because a dual layer Blu-ray disc can hold multiple hours of HD footage doesn't mean it should. Customers willing to pay more for a physical copy want a higher bitrate (non-adult movies & TV shows have better quality on Blu-ray vs streaming); the adult industry shouldn't intentionally underachieve a basic standard already established.

I was looking up old porn Blu-ray reviews and was surprised some were encoded at 720p (what!?) but unsurprisingly the vast majority didn't have lossless audio.

If companies stick to 4 or 5 scenes (around 2 or 3 hours total) like they already do for DVD, the bitrate should be good and there shouldn't be any compression issues. Get too greedy that more space = more content and they can't blame anyone but their own stupidity for not knowing how to utilize disc space properly and that picky customers won't purchase their Blu-rays that look and sound worse than bootleg quality (on that topic, DON'T USE BD-R! Use pressed discs!)

Assuming Combo Packs return both Blu-ray and DVD copies should have the same content so it wouldn't make sense to include an extra scene or 2 exclusive to the Blu-ray. If there's leftover space use it for HD BTS and other extras.

And for those who think lossy audio is fine (Dolby Digital) for Blu-ray; it shouldn't. Sound is underrated. Watch your favorite webscene muted and let me know if you think it's still as good vs when watched with the audio turned on. Lossless audio would enhance the scene. Nobody is demanding for 5.1/7.1 surround or a Dolby Atmos mix, but default LPCM stereo shouldn't be unreasonable...

Doubt many studios have thought too far ahead but the ones already shooting their scenes at 24 fps will have a much easier time than those shooting at 30 or 60 fps. The latter would either have to spend additional time and effort to convert the footage to 24 fps for the Blu-ray release or risk criticism for 1080 interlaced encodes instead of the objectively better looking 1080p.

Unless very recent Lesbian MILFs is a Zero Tolerance title released back in March of this year.

Companies aren't releasing Blu-ray because it's still too expensive for most of them and probably lack of knowledge and resources for how to author a Blu-ray disc.

Taking Vinegar Syndrome out of the discussion (they themselves don't consider themselves a porn company or part of the industry) there hasn't been any modern content releases on Blu-ray to study sales numbers and customer interest so unsurprising an industry primarily run by old white men with outdated thinking are probably still thinking data from 10 years ago is still relevant.

Diabolic still is releasing new DVDs (originals not just compilations) so DVD doesn't appear to be abandoned completely.

Maybe TPTB cutting costs to focus on producing content and releasing it through 1 label only?

Also while rules can change over time IIRC for award shows there's a "requirement" that for non-web scene categories they need a DVD release. As long as there are studios & directors/producers who care about recognition, DVDs will probably continue to stick around for eligibility purposes. DVDs cost almost nothing to replicate so even the most frugal studio will still release them for certain reasons.

I still like my physical disks for music and movies/tv but less and less are getting released and I'm convinced it will soon become quite a niche market like vinyl records are now.

In terms of porn, it's been years since I last bought a porn dvd and I used to buy them regularly. I'm not surprised it's being phased out and that they never bothered with Blu-ray or 4K UHD discs. It's just porn at the end of the day not some $200m Hollywood movie, most people won't pay extra for a slightly better picture on a porno, especially when most watch shitty quality pornhub videos on their phone anyway.

The only section of porn where image clarity is paramount and being pushed further than ever is VR where people want the image to be as close to real life as possible.

Customers will eventually get tired of being price gouged for numerous services they don't all use equally.

Some might also get fed up with unnecessary edits and censorship for "controversial" or "offensive" material that isn't approved by a vocal minority who have way too much influence.

Watching content on discs as originally intended might be the only way to see something uncut and unedited.

Garbage new woke programming will also make people more curious to seek older content that isn't trying to lecture but just entertain.

Customers who have spent money on digital rentals will be upset as over time plenty of things they thought they owned forever were not theirs and are randomly deleted because licenses expire or TPTB decide to remove the content indefinitely. If you don't have an individual download you can freely transfer, digital purchases that are streaming only objectively are a waste of money.

Internet costs might get more expensive while there's countless DVDs and Blu-rays that can be bought brand new for bargain bin prices.
