Although I'm living in Europe I'm really fascinated by the city Los Angeles. I've been to New York city last year (it was sooo great), but once in my life I'd like to visit L.A. Only seeing Misty Rain in one of the dance-clubs would be worth the journey ! I read a lot about the city on the internet and also about the big amount of porn production companies. And that's what I'd like to know: Why has Los Angeles become the biggest porn production-place on earth ? Who knows the (hidden) facts about that history ?
The two main reasons I can think of are the presence of the mainstream film industry and the fact that California's judicial system has ruled that pornography is legal to produce.
I bet if you went to Nina Hartley's site (where she has a forum) she could answer your question. She responds to everyone. She was there pretty much from the start.
Hardware's second reason is the biggest. Way back when, porn was produced primarily in NYC, LA & SF. In all 3 cities, they had to hide from the authorities when shooting. If they got caught, the producer would usually get arrested for pandering.
At some point, a precedent was set in LA that hiring people to have sex with one another on film is not pandering. Once that happened, the shooting in NYC & SF dried up.

In the second decade of the 20th century more and more independent producers went to LA because they wanted to flee the cost of licences for the cameras invented by Edison and other inventors.
Hollywood and porn valley are both built on easy-going law and easy-going observing the law.
Aaah, hi Juha ! Another porn enthusiast from Germany. Just like me !They might have them, but for me all the houses and nature in the Hollywood hills seem to be the perfect porn set, for shooting a scene outside or at the pool !
It's hard to imagine a scene taken outside in Manhattan.
Also, at that time, the "shooting" part of the studio was in LA and the business half in NYC because at that time it took two weeks for a check written in LA to clear its NYC bank. Movies back then were made on borrowed shoestrings.
Yeah juha, you're right ! That's sad but true. But I think it's very simple to find answers on that. American girls do porn with a lot more passion and many of them are unique beauties. And the producers of course...they know how to give us a 'great show' and have a good taste for theirself. All atypical things for German porn. Hmm...but..wait ! At least we are able to build some good cars. But that fact won't change my love for American porn !
Oh, I forgot one more fact ! We don't have a city like Los Angeles for porn productions ! Porn, palms and pools. These things for me belong together !

Whoa! Thanx juha, I love this stuff. I wish I could offer you an insightful e-link in return. The best I can do is recomend a book, "King Cohn" by Bob Thomas as a story about how a major studio (Columbia) survived because of "the float."
Um, his book about Irving Thalberg was good, too. But MGM was (almost) always well-bankrolled.
