Why do some sites use such an extremely shallow depth of field that parts of the subject itself become blurry?

For example, in some full-body shots, the face might be sharp while the rest of the body already falls out of focus because it's slightly farther away from the camera.

What is the actual advantage of this style, and why is it considered appealing by so many people?

Nubiles does it, Love Her Feet does it. Who else?

Digital Playground has been doing it. At least did it for their recent The Drifter movie. Not sure why, maybe it's what they can afford, but it's bad.

Because they are going for the "cinematic" look on their scenes. They employ professional cameras and lenses and shoot at a wide open aperture from f/2.8 and lower to achieve a very shallow depth of field. By doing that, they can shoot the scene with minimal lighting. It's an aesthetic look and i agree sometimes it doesn't lend well to a porn scene when you need to have sharp focus from head to toe.
