His movies aren't bad, but they aren't great.

He just makes them too artsy fartsy, too many "weird" costumes, clothing, wigs, hairstyles, colors, lighting.

I have seen two of his films, neither of which I will say is bad, it just looks like a work of art, not porn.

I think Ninn is a love him or hate him kind of guy Martymaster. Personally I have really enjoyed some of his films. I can't say I love every movie of his, but I have at the very least enjoyed almost all of them. BIGmike complaints are valid and are shared, by many porn fans who arn't into Ninn's work.

If your looking to try out some Ninn DVDs I recommend you take a look at New Wave Hookers 5, Forever Night, & Decadence (only available on video for now)

I mostly watch features & couples' movie, like Paul Thomas or Toni English, but Michael Ninn's sex is too cold & robotic. It's all very beautiful but ultimately it doesn't arouse. sometimes some scenes click (Jodie Moore & Nick Manning's last coupling in "Perfect" , Tiffany Million & Gerry Pike in one of the "Sex" opus...) but mosttimes aesthetics are privileged over heat.
The technical quality is top-notch, but you won't get hard.

While vodka tonic I think that is a matter of opinion. I agree there are some scenes that lack "heat" in some of Ninn's films, like "Perfect" for example does have a few, but in my opinion the sex is anything but cold or robotic in the above mentioned titles.

To flesh out Bigmike's point - in my opinion Ninn's primary focus is on creating a type of movie that is sensual, not sexual. That means that the sex is not the primary focus, but is subordinated to the overall affect he is trying to achieve. That doesn't make all the sex bad, as those who embrace his vision will attest, but it does get in the way for others who want a more natural feel (if I can put it that way).

I don't like his movies because they're very very soft. I did like some scenes in Shock and Latex though.

Marty, why doncha rent one of his tapes & just give it a try. I'd definitely recommend "Perfect", if only for Nikita Denise . As I said earlier, it didn't click 4 me, but it's an otherwise very different & challenging porn experience. "Latex" is another earlier one w. Sunset Thomas , with light latex fetish that doesn't get in the way of enjoying the scenes. If you like Andrew Blake or Nick Orleans, you'll like Michael Ninn.

I'm with Gold_member on this one! Ninn films are like black licorice... not everybody likes black licorice... but those who do, REALLY like black licorice!

Not a fan of Michael Ninn, or any other similar slow motion, black and white, flashing styles.

I can't whack off to his videos! Ultimately, my little head is the final authority! Ninn's stuff does not work for me.

Ed Power's videos? Automatic! Go figure!

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason porn filmmaking as a whole will never rise above mediocrity. Witness the stonethrowers batter the man who tries his best to bring cinematic quality to hardcore sex.

Marty, think of Ninn this way: If MTV showed pornos, Ninn is what they would look like.

You say that as though it could somehow be a good (or at least above mediocre) thing.

Ninn shot one scene that I like, Sunset Thomas and John Doe's opening scene in Latex, of course it can only be appreciated in an abstract, conceptual way, there's certainly nothing hot about any scene he's ever shot.

Your comments suggest that
a) porn should aspire to some lofty ideal (it shouldn't);
b) that MTV is somehow to be admired (it isn't), and
c) that people who disagree with or dislike an artist's vision are troglodytes (their not).

In short, you seem to confusing porn with erotica. As dumblonde so aptly put it, porn is whacking material for guys. We're not here to comment on line and form, we're here to enhance our sex lives. We may appreciate beauty and demand good product, but please don't confuse that with a desire to turn porn into "art."

is it really fair to single out michael ninn in this way? i mean, isn't there a whole school of xxx "visionaries" that shoot in the same style?

It seems to me that some of you are forgetting that good porn is a matter of personal taste. Yes Ninn is not for everyone, much the same way Andrew Blake is not for everyone, and yes even the same way Jules Jordan is not for everyone. It just seems to me like there are a lot of personal opinions being presented like cold hard facts.

I do think Ninn's scenes are "hot" for the most part and not in an abstract, conceptual way

I don't think Porn needs to aspire to "some lofty ideal", but I do apreciate that some directors aspire to push the medium further or in new directions.

Hey man I like my MTV

I'm not sure Mr. Ninn is being singled out to an extent greater than called for by the title of this thread. I agree that Mr. Ninn is not the only director shooting in, shall we say, the sensual style. I imagine that comments related to Mr. Ninn's style would be applied by the respondents to any other director whose movies are similarly done.

Please understand that I don't object to Mr. Ninn doing his thing, nor am I intent on belittling those who share and enjoy his vision. In fact I own some of his product. However, to suggest that his style is superior is to belittle those who don't care for it.
