I can see companies not creating trailers because of the cost to make, host and server power and bandwidth to distribute them.
note: Private does have trailers for their newer films.

I've found that I've been buying a lot of Evil Angel, DVSX, and Digital Playground stuff lately and I started thinking about why I don't have more studio variety and it dawned on me that these 3 studio sites are where I frequent because I can view the trailers for a lot of their movies. After I view them I get interested in the movie and buy. I've been to several other sites, like Private, Platinum X, and Red Light but there's no trailers available for free (or very few) so I don't buy cause I have no indicator of what the movie's going to be like. Part of the genius of Jules Jordan is to offer some free pics and stuff on his site. i often go there, see some of the free stuff pics, and whattyaknow I'm buying the movie the pics are from. i would think that more studios would offer free trailer views for their movies. It seems it would only increase potential sales. Anybody else like viewing the trailer before purchase? [Link] |

| TonyC Comstock Films 2523 Posts 8/03 | Posted - Mar 8 2005 : 2:27PM If you're a company like Evil Angel (or Dreamworks), companies which make products that appeal to a wide range of people and have strong upside potential, then putting money into getting the word out makes sense – the more people see what E.A. is doing, the more discs they're going to sell. (Take a look how easy E.A. makes it for even the most casual visitor to their Web site to spend a whole afternoon looking at trailers.) If you're a specialist catering to a niche market, or if the upside of your product is limited by lower quality, then there's a limit to how many units you're going move, regardless of how many people know what you have to offer. When you've got a niche', low volume product, giving casual porn surfers a free taste isn't going to translate into sales at the same rate as your bandwidth charges. Conversely, ever businessman knows your returning customer is the easiest sale. As long as you maintain your level of quality (whatever that may be) your repeat customers are going to keep coming back. Their satisfaction with their earlier purchases is better marketing than any trailer. It could be due to some weird laws in the US that sometimes say that if you let one person do something, you give up the right to prevent someone else from doing the same thing. So, if they allow you to put portions of their movie on your site, even though you are not profiting from it and are uising it to sell their product, they can't go after other sites that are pirating their movie and costing them sales. That has been well established in courtcases all over the world.
