Why don’t porn stars and their handlers promote their mainstream appearances?
Savanna Samson was just on a Comedy Central ‘Daily Show’ segment. It was only for a few seconds. Savanna only says “Hey, Jones, you really think you’ve got the balls for that story?”.
But from every press release and site that is reporting this now, it seems it was only announced the day AFTER it aired and only hours before the episode re-aired.
This has happened far too many times. A performer is appearing on a mainstream show and neither the porn star, their camp, agency, or studio cares to mention this days in advance giving enough time for websites & blogs and their fans to know. It is either revealed by the porn press a few hours before airing or the day after it already aired.
Why didn’t Savanna or Vivid release this information days earlier? I don’t know what all the handlers are being paid to do when they can’t even manage to notify people in advance of their client’s mainstream appearance gig. Your client won’t be asked to return back if the network doesn’t see a spike in ratings and fan feedback if no one knew ahead of time.
You can see the video either at http://xfanz.com/, http://fleshbot.com/, or at [ invalid url ].

If they're savvy they do. I'm sure Jenna does (for example).
If you belong to a fan club, make a suggestion, possibly the girl will get it and resolve the issue next time she makes an appearance. Most girls don't fully comprehend the importance of cross marketing and wider market share appeal. What you gonna do?

I missed it but only got to see it through the videos that are now provided. But I've always wondered why so many of their mainstream work isn't promoted more in the porn press. Because how else will you be invited back if there was no spike in viewership and fan feedback?
No where on AVN or XBiz did they mention Jenna Jameson's appearance on 'The View' at all. Not even after she appeared.

Maybe because it's NOT porn.

But it involves a porn star though. Anything that could make them a bigger name in the mainstream should be reported. They report some mainstream work that some performers do but not other mainstream work that other performers do. Why not promote all performers that are doing mainstream work that will bring more attention to their porn movies and websites?

First off, thanks Darrrah for picking up the slack for SS's negligent press agents. Secondly, greetings to a fellow Savanna Samson enthusiast. There aren't enough of us on this board.
I think that Zoid mainly has it right. Exposure doesn't always turn into profit. It's also about control. Once a porn star successfully, expands her audience she acquires leverage and power. JJ (and Tera also) were able to break free of the porn studio system and created their own studios to grab a bigger share of the profits for themselves. Thus in such cases the studios can lose out.
Right now there appears to be a symbiotic relationship with Savanna Samson at Vivid and Stormy Daniels at Wicked, but that may not last. There's always the chance that the star can out grow porn and the studios lose again. And that's exactly what Savanna is trying to do with her music career.

Sometimes they do. But you are right, not enough do it in advance. I think it has more to do with their handlers than them.
The stars like Tera Patrick release a press release every time you turn your head. If she walked by a TV set her people issue a press release about it!!
I think in her case they take it to the extreme but as far as the other girls go, I agree. These girls don't seem to understand how much a story could help them. Sure in most cases a few hundred people see it, give it the once over and never think about it again but sometimes those stories are picked up and they get thousands and thousands of views and that's very good exposure.
But it's not just with mainstream things either. But even just major career stuff.
I was just talking to a friend and he told me that Nikki Benz, who I've always thought was just amazingly hot isn't going to do anal scenes anymore for anyone but her website. NIKKIBENZ.COM the only place to see Nikki Benz do anal!!
This is great. Her fans get exclusive access to her ass and no press release could be found about this. This is news, very relevant career news and a missed marketing opportunity IMHO.

Savanna seems pretty savvy, however. At 41 years old, she is no babe in the woods. Back in 2006 I saw her on quite a few mainstream TV talk shows promoting her wines (Savanna's Wines).

Was there a press release that no one ran? Or there was never a press release ever?

I think there was just no press release. I mean if there was a PR sent out you would think that at least ONE of the news sites would have ran it, no?

I don't know what the point of a website is if they're not going to promote it properly after putting all that time, energy, work, and money into it.

With the state of the industry today, I would think the studios would release all the press releases they could just to get any publicity to promote their projects and keep their company afloat.

Chaunce Hayden of Steppin Out? Good Lord. Isn't that a grocery store free "magazine"? I would rather promote my client being on Comedy Central for the few seconds that she was instead of promoting her being on the cover of Steppin Out.

Mea Culpa, and thank you Monstar! Steppin Out cover, I'm impressed. It would seem that Savanna's representation is doing plenty to get her out there.

In the past, when I've done non-adult projects-I don't find out until hours, or a day before. Or...someone hears about it writes a shitty piece, so nobody wants a real interview.

I have to wonder if such mainstream appearances really make much difference in a pornstar's career even if they were announced in advance. Does Savanna's exposure from her wine help her pornstar career? Does being more well known always translate into a bigger porn career?

In some ways it does very much translate into making them a bigger or better porn star simply because of the media exposure. It's as simple as the more your name is out there, the more well known you are.
Jenna Jameson loves to tell the story of how she made herself a star by doing her own media promotion non stop, day in and day out, 20000 hours a day. Radio promotion spots, interviews, whatever she could just to get her name out there.
Nothing has changed in the last few years. The concept is still very much the same, only not all girls do it. Some hire PR people that issue press releases for them.
Some clearly suck more than others.
True story, one pretty well known star who I won't mention by name pays this company $500 a month to send out a press release or two that she gives them the information for (ie: I'll be in so and so city dancing on these dates) for her. Well this company sends out the releases with typos and some pretty serious spelling errors from time to time. How funny is that? Well I guess less funny and more sad.
But the point is, they shell out the money to this PR guy and then don't follow through if the guy sucks or not or if he's even sending out the releases.
However some girls are clearly more involved and I think Tera Patrick comes to mind with that one. For the first two weeks of September there are at least 8 Tera Patrick related press releases (September 2 - 18). EIGHT!!! Tera Patrick movies, Tera Patrick fashions, Tera Patrick on Playboy TV, Tera Patrick signed some deal with a cell phone company. Blah blah blah. Tera Patrick knows having our name in the news is important and she no doubt makes sure the person she hires to get the press releases out stays on top of it. I assure you no other porn star has even close to the press releases per month that Tera Patrick does.
It is all of that exposure that helps Tera Patrick stay on top of her game. She is now by far the most popular porn star in the world if you exclude Jenna Jameson.
So if Tera Patrick is at a party and talks for two seconds to Paris Hilton about how white shoes are hot, don't think for a moment her people won't be issuing a press release about it and that's what the other girls are missing out on.
Now where I think she fails at and Nina Mercedez and Gina Lynn too is the hiring of whatever company that is that handles their Myspace page, who in turn does nothing but spam the hell out of "add my hot friend", making those posts as if it was really the porn star in question speaking. Fans aren't stupid. They know for a fact it's not the porn star saying that shit 400 times a day. What's even worse is that they re-use the same head lines and post them as different porn stars.
This is my seXXXy new friend Krystle Lina!
She's the Muscle Barbie! Check out my girl Wendy Rider!
She's Lil Miss Wonderful! My girl Niki is HOTT!!!
This Hottie is My HOT friend CD, Please ADD HER!!
This is my beautiful new friend Sexy JC! Please add her!
This blonde HOTTIE is my girl Saffron Taylor!
It's nothing short of fraudulent spam. And in the end it turns off the true die hard fans that know it's not really the porn star posting. They want to hear what their favorite porn star has to say not read the crap ass spam and junk the company they hired is posting while pretending to be that porn star. Actually it's so tacky that they do it so much too. Just doing a quick check, today is September 18th. Under the name of porn star Nina Mercedez and they have not one but TWO of these type of posts on today alone.
I get that they want to hire a company to check their friends requests, post bulletins that are relevant to their career and delete the spams posted on comments but that is as far as it should go. Making posts pretending like you are the porn star in question is just one step to far.
So what is a good medium? Well sending out press releases to the major news agencies every time you do something remotely significant I think is a good start. Making constant blog posts with this same information is also important. But having a company spam your fans pretending to be you, not a good plan.
I'm just rambling now. I think I lost the point of my original post so I'll shut up now. :)

This is the way I see it. The people behind these "mainstream" productions are already going out on a limb by hiring a porn star. Whether they like the star's work or just think it's will be cool or help with interest. But too much interest and it could backfire. OK say the star or their people promote this mainstream event. Most who see the release are gonna be fans. BUT theres always some stick in the mud asshole whose ready to shit on anything that's fun or isn't in line with some conservative check list of morals to make a fuss, call for a boycott of something. They find out some porn chick is on some show and like I said they're gonna wanna make a fuss out of it. A fuss that can cost some people money if sponsors get sppoked. And that also means the chance the porn stars work will hit the cutting room floor 'cause they wanna try and appease the assholes. So, let the show run. Someone(some fanboy)will notice the star and word will get out or like it was said after it's aired it's promoted. Now of course that doesn't mean the frumpy housewife can't make a fuss after the show runs, but at least the show got to run once without hassle. That's my take on it. I could be way off.

I don't know...If mainstream exposure truly makes that big a difference in a porn career then Mary Carey should be the biggest pornstar out there.
I think going on a show like "Howard Stern" or "Bubba The Love Sponge" where the core audience are men who embrace porn can help a girls porn career where she gets to plug her site or gets that audience to google her. But just appearing somewhere or getting their name mentioned may make them more well know to the public but I don't think really translates to a bigger more profitable porn career. I think porn fans get a big kick out of seeing pornstars turn up in mainstream but the rest of the public probably couldn't care less and aren't going to suddenly want to buy her stuff or check her out.
But I could be wrong.

Tera Patrick is now bordering on overkill and overexposure. It's fine to release where you will be appearing. But the fake press releases how she was going to appear in a Quentin Tarantino movie. She even released to the NY Post her quote “It would be the hottest remake ever, and I’m honored to be considered. I was built for this part.” Then she releases the fake release how Angelina Jolie is asking her for Catwoman advice. Angelina could ask Julie Newmar, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Halle Berry for that advice.
Tera than has the balls to say to www.blackbookmag.com/ that she is the only porn star that she can think of that is mainstream. So to hell with Traci Lords, Ginger Lynn, Marilyn Chambers, and Ron Jeremy that broke down the doors in Hollywood for people like Tera.
Tera also goes on to say she has never been an escort and has no interest in it. She makes money using her brain.

It's really insane how many go out each week and it's not just the fake ones like that either. I didn't even include those fake ones in my overall count from that earlier post.
But you are right, it just makes her look stupid and she doesn't seem to know it.
She has so much to offer on her own, why oh why ruin it with all this fakeness and attempt to prove yourself to be "special" and better than X Y Z.
