So, that's not the way to go. But just a big, fun, glossy book with pictures, credits, bios, quotes from the girls if possible, opinions, what's known of their lives before and after porn, and just a tribute to their appeal. Seems it would sell. Porn fans are loyal. Steve Sullivan has done something like this with mainstream actresses and models (and some porn). Seems an untapped market and would help make porn even more mainstream. I'm no writer and have no connections but many of these women are really beautiful and appealing. Why not celebrate it? It's smartly, even compassionately, done, and the photos are great: it's the Savannah Era, and her death shadows the entire enterprise (seems the photographer got a bit involved). Finally, the book is depressing, but it's not like Gitler set out to reach that destination. Quite the opposite, but that's where the book ends up. Susan Faludi did a number on TT Boy, which was published in the New Yorker a few years ago, and as part of her not quite recent book about the "crisis in American manhood" (or ... whatever, zzzzz).

No movie reviews, but, as you've said, plenty of bios, credits, quotes from the girls, gossip, tidbits and all sorts of interesting observations, insights, and inside information about the girls and the porn industry in general. It would be entirely obvious that the author of this book is a true porn FAN of the highest order and unashamedly so. It would also be clear that the author has an extensive knowledge of the porn industry, top to bottom, and was personally well-acquainted with a great many people in the industry, performers to directors to studio heads. The author would also have an extremely engaging and entertaining writing style that everyone could easily relate to. If a major publishing house were to fully realize the sales potential of such a book, and were willing to find the right author, commission him, and bank roll the project to produce a top quality book, and then (along with the author himself) were willing to promote and market the book agressively, I believe that they would ultimately earn a fortune in profits. There must be an astounding number of porn fans of all adult ages and from all walks of life just in the United States alone. And from what I've read, porn fans collectively spend literally BILLIONS of dollars on porn every year. Here's a fantasy. I use the word "fantasy" purposefully because I'm not trying to egg the person on that I'm about to mention. It's pure fantasy. What if John Stagliano were to one day produce such a book?! Someone who fits the bill in terms of all of the author's qualities that I mentioned before, but is also himself a legend in the porn industry. Someone who always brings great passion, skill, diligence, and professionalism to every project that he undertakes. Someone who can LITERALLY do it all and is already himself a publisher. That would be one hell of a book and it would SELL, SELL, SELL!!! It's just a fantasy, but that doesn't stop me from dreamin'. Pontus [Link] |

Who cares? Porn's appeal is the women. Plain and simple. And I don't think it would need a big publisher (never work anyway, they'd only do the intellectual bit). The Barefacts book was just a self-published, fan's obsession and tapped into the unspoken interest in star's nude scenes. This would just be a fun book, a small appealing picture of each girl, hundreds of girls, what's known, quotes from guys who worked with them and all those others things. Could be a edition on foreign girls, if it's all too much. Books on different decades, even including girls who did loops. Danny Peary did a big book called, I think, Cult Movie Stars. It was cool. People who never get written about but we've all seen. Just his personal opinions about them, liking Hayley Mills when he was a kid, etc. Not even insider stuff this could have. And it was good. And books like this can be updated every few years and sell more. Or be all new with all new girls. Porn's about women. Sex sells. Beautiful women sell. So why wouldn't a fun tribute to them sell?
