WOW, it's just seems like almost every person that has done one porn scene in their life is referred to as a porn"star". Is it really all it takes? Are you really a pornstar as long as you appear in porn movies? This for me sucks because I know there are true stars in the porn industry, but overusing the term just takes so much away from the poeple who deserve that title. In music, acting, journalism etc, the term star is used for people that truly deserve it one way or the other. Either because a lot of people like them, or they can just perform better that most people that do that job. In porn, star means participant. Can someone explain to me why the term is being abused in the porn industry. [Link] |

They can pretty much call their performers anything they want, and nobody's going to notice. They could call them porn godesses (and have) if they want. It's not like Roger Ebert is going to write a scathing commentary about the overuse of the term. Second, it's one of those things that someone started and it just stuck. Like the word 'star' itself meaning a popular actor. A star is a giant ball of hot gas in space, not a movie actor. Someone used it because he got tired of saying 'principal player' or 'main actor' or whatever and it stuck. So they're not porn actors, theyre porn stars. Personally, I think the terms a tad derogatory. Anybody can be a star. Not eveyone is an actor-- especially in porn. [Link] |

I suspect the term was just part of the attempt of the industry to lift itself beyond the gutter back then, and performers like Marilyn Chamber could be legitimately referred to as stars of a sort. If your in the industry, or in WWE's case, their company it's just a title. I have definitely seen reports/documentaries like on cnn that refer to them as "porn actress" or "adult performer". These reports are not from the industry, go to AVN awards (I have not been) and most of the girls are referred to as Porn Stars, I would guess, and have seen on G4's visits to the show that this is the case. So I think it's a title to not be taken as %100 precise definition of the performer, but as an adjective describing their profession. In certain cases main stream reports on the adult industry will call the performers "Porn Stars" but I would give that to research. From my experience when there is a true "Star" of porn some of the adjectives are Top tier, Headline, prominent, and others to acknowledge the headlining ability of the performer. I do agree that the term is over used. IMO this applies to our society in general. Everything is extreme or ultimate or watch "Dancing with the stars" and tell me how many stars there really are, some yes but for the most part? I have to disagree. "Reality Stars"? ... STARS? for me I would rather refer to Jamie Elle as a star than the majority of the douche bags that are now called stars on main stream TV. It's a good question that you have brought up without a doubt. I'm not trying to make your statement incorrect at all. I just have to say it's a society question rather than a adult industry question. I hate certain terminology now a days and star is one of them but I guess the main stream use of the word, when I have to see it every 5 to 10 minutes, bothers me much more than the "underground, or pay to see" use of the word for Adult Performers". With all the girls in the porn business I gotta add that "star" is in the eye of the beholder specifically with sex. Good question, made me think. [Link] |

I am just a little baffled by the excessive use of the term. I mean, there are millions of singers, only a few are called stars there are millions of actors(non porn), only a few are called stars there are millions of athletes, only a few get called stars I could go on and on ..... But switch to porn, there are I don't know how many people who do porn and they all get called stars. It's just a little strange to call some of the people stars, when they haven't proven themselves yet, or in the case of others, they have been around for a while and have never done anything major, but the term that is used to describe outstanding people is used for them as well. As I already said in the first post, I think that it just takes too much away from people who should actually be called pornstars. [Link] |

People that do not like the stuff and think poorly of the people that watch it is wrong. Labeling it as Porn is what i hate. Adult perfomer is much better even though this could to be argued by thousands that say porn is bad and it deserves the name,its there choice. I believe that the performers deserve respect. So many people say they want to be seen buying the 'porn". Personally i d do not care. I walk right into a porn room and see my local barber there, we are all human. Regarding saying who gest the higher credits, the awards come out from AVN, however though every person has their own choice as to who they like . That is why the site is so good. we tell the performers we like them.They apprciate it. We all want them to feel welcome because they all count!
