One thing I've noticed over the years is that, when it comes to low production values, bad camera work and/or editing, lack of creativity, etc. in most porn, a lot of people try to excuse it by saying "It's just porn!" or "It's just people fucking, not actual cinema", or something similar. (I'm not even talking about story-driven feature films here, just the normal gonzo stuff).
Personally, as a story-centric porn fan, statements like these have always bothered me. (They make it MUCH harder for narrative porn to made at all, much less the really good stuff). But, thinking about it from a normal porn fan's perceptive, it bugs me as well. I mean, why is that ONLY sex films get the "It's just X, therefore it's fine if we put absolutely no effort in it" treatment? I mean, I don't see what's so special about explicit sex on film that makes it perfectly acceptable to put no effect into the cinematography of it, the composition of it, etc. I mean yeah, most people that watch porn movies (especially gonzo ones) just want to see sex, but that shouldn't mean that it's O.K. to not bother to put any craft or skill or, dare I say, artistry, into it, IMHO. I mean, as far as gonzo goes, I'd rather look at well-shot and well-edited sex, than poorly shot & unedited sex. So, what gives? Is it just lingering "sex/porn is dirty and you're dirty for watching it" stigma that causes people to put no effort into most porn?
