I'm not having trouble with any other programs, not even IE. But everything is slow. As I type these words there is a half second to one second delay until they appear on the screen. When I click on a tab, there is a similar delay. When I type in a url, when i click on a link, there is an even longer delay and it only started a couple of days ago. I have made no changes in weeks.

Plus when I watch a video clip, it pauses for one second every 3 or 4 seconds.

Tried control-F5 to clear your browser's cache?
Is something else eating your bandwidth? Malware or something you don't realize is running?

The issue isn't bandwidth, it's the application itself. There is a delay in everything I do.

This may seem obvious but it is still worth asking. Have you made sure that you are using the most current version?
Clearing the cache didn't help?

Hit Control-Alt-Delete once, and open the Windows Task Manager. Click the "processes" tab. Click on the CPU column header once or twice to sort the list by the percentage of CPU used by each running process. Do the same with the Mem Usage column. Is there something that is gobbling up most of the CPU or memory? If you close Firefox, does it go away?
Then, follow up with a good AV scan of everything. AVG, for example. Also, an anti-spyware scan. Ad Ware.
Can't hurt.
Which reminds me - at various times in the past, haven't they had a problem with Firefox consuming more and more memory the longer it is left open? Could nietzsche be experiencing something like that?
nietzsche: How long have you had FF open? Can you detect any difference if it is only open for a few minutes vs. several hours or days?
This is the story and it's something that goes wrong about twice a month: the program starts acting weird and sluggish. For some reason I didn't pickup that this was my normal problem. What I do is I shut the program and check out the processes. If it's still in the process list, I kill it from there and restart. Then it works ok. Anybody else have this problem?
I think I've had it a couple of times. I think, probably, Firefox just gets it's wires crossed every once in a while and needs a fresh start. This can happen with just about any program. Unless it keeps happening in rapid succession, I wouldn't worry about it. As long as it isn't locking up your computer or causing you to lose anything important. It still beats the shit out of IE when it works right.
It could be malware or a virus or something. I would check. Probably not, though if it doesn't happen often.
What about your add-ons? Do you remember if it started happening just after you installed a particular add-on? Some of them can really fuck you up. You may want to uninstall any of them you don't really need (or care about) and check for updates on the ones you really like.
So what was the result of AV scan? Find anything? and what AV program did you use?
Same for anti-spyware. Find anything? What program(s) did you use?
Basically - Are you squeaky clean?

Sounds like updates are being downloaded to your PC. I have occasionally noticed similar issues as yours. I use a freeware program called Advance Process Termination (aka APT. Yoc can download it from Snapfiles.com.
In my case I would see a program called dump. exe was running & when ever I killed it using APT there would be a jump in performance.

Did you do the firefox "tweaks" listed in this forum a couple weeks ago? I did and the same thing happened this past week. I undid them and the problem went away.

I think this problem may indeed be a updates issue.
