Red Light District and Platinum X Pictures share part of their ownerships. Both these companies built their name on high quality profile features, like top level camerawork, picture and sound, full lenght DVDs with at least 2 hours of sex, tons of DVD extras etc...
But despite this high quality being shared by both companies, RLD seems to be more popular than PXP. Micheal Stefano selling its owners share in PXP to pass at RLD as a aimple director just to have the RLD brand on his DVDs is just the last confirmation of that.
Even in the corner of the world where I live, RLD titles are much easier to find than PXP. In the last few months I could find RLD DVDs in almost every good shop, while to manage renting some PXP titles I am really interest in I usually have to go shopping in a few rentals before finding one that stores it and for some titles (like Sexy Euro Girls 2) I just couldn't find them anywhere.
So It really looks to me that RLD has better distribution worldwide and that is probably due to the fact that there's more customer demand for that company compared to its sister one.

But then I wonder why. If had to choose to only watch either RLD or PXP, I would go for the latter one without any hesitation. Given that in fact the technical quality is absolutely the same, to my eyes the product variety of PXP is much wider, they have a range of different products.
While Vince Vouyeur, Jake Malone, Mike John and the other RLD directors all shoot basically the same kind of girls, Brandon Iron, Jewel, Steve Holmes all have their distinctive way of picking up female talents. It seems to me that while RLD almost only appeals to the barely legal/all natural niche public, PXP shows women for every taste, from the 18 years old newcomer to the veteran porn superstar of a decade, from the girl next door type to the glamourously enhanced California blonde.

So, why is it that RLD has more success while targeting only a part of the consumer tastes that are apparently addressed by PXP?

It could be partially due to the fact that RLD had a year or two head-start on PXP. In addition, they created a lot of buzz early on due to the Anabolic/Diabolic defections.

RLD is nastier than PXP. So, I prefer RLD.

RLD has had more time to establish its brand, and they had some momentum in terms of snagging big-name stars-turned-directors. PXP was like a division of RLD, regardless of whatever the business angles were, and I think they've suffered from a kind of step-child/kid sister status. A lot of PXP stuff has been very distinctive -- Brandon Iron and Mason, especially -- but I think there's one answer that's simple: RLD has much hotter boxcovers. PXP's tend to use cold colors,
WAY too much white and black and graphics instead of natural backgrounds, and the girls just don't jump out as much when you're browsing the shelves.

easy, R/L is an older porn company, R/L´s philosophy is making porn like fast food, they are all about making cheap, generic porn that according to them (at least his original founder said it once) the casual porn watcher can buy it like you buy a hamburger. Just flood the market with (cookie cutter) porn every month and you are in. Porn for the masses that do not know any better in one word. ..PXP is the opposite in allmost everything. PXP has directors that take their time making their videos, they haven´t sold out (yet) ..at least the ones that remain in PXP. At the end my friend, what you are asking is like asking why Mc Donnals is more popular that this other Food chain that sells Gourmet Food. ..being popular doesn´t allways mean being better. ..all this talk reminds me of an old sketch from Saturday Night Live. ...About a cheap food store that all they sold was cheeseburger, they had a lot of bussiness but all there was in the menu was cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger.....fuck, never mind, my analogy sucks, at least those guys used to put cheese on it, R/L only makes hamburger, hamburger, hamburger.

Diceman´s posting made me remember the principal reason (besides selling fast food) why R/L got to be well known in such short time..and it was long before the Anabolic defections. Their early boxcovers (artwork) were clones of Anabolic's. Many people paid attention to their videos from the begining thinking they were Anabolic videos.

Don't underestimate the name itself...
RedLight District is one of the greatest porn studio names ever.
It conjures a mental image of porn, stripclubs, street-walkers, massage parlors, peep shows, etc. that we perverts just find intoxicating

Another possibility is that RLD was a new venture that took porn by storm. Whereas, PXP can be perceived as a vehicle for their pornstar talent owner/partners like Jewel DeNyle. Sure, it attracts a large guaranteed fan base, but there are a lot of people who already have strong perceptions as to what a Jewel DeNyle-Brandon Iron-Michael Stefano product is. In other words, "not much new" to check out as far as a brand.
Jewel, with a long and strong career, has an awful lot of product out there with many studios. Now that she has retired as a performer (the first time anyway :), PXP will have more of an opportunity to develop "lines" vs. product perceived as "star vehicles."

All Statements are 100% personal opinion. I like PXP cause they have more of the stars I like. They also have girl with boob jobs.

RLD has more Euro girls, and until Steffano jumped ship, I never paid them a lot of attention as of late. They are two good companies, and PXP is newer, but I expect both of them to be among the top 5 companies this year.

One reason: THE DREADED HALO EFFECT.

Yet to see it on any RLD disc.

Mike John is not a cookie-cutter director. Neither is Jake Malone. RLD has a rep for making that kind of product, and some of the directors there are guilty, but I think it's unfair to broadly label RLD that way. I have not seen enough of Manuel, Everhard, etc.'s movies to comment, but while -- yes -- a new title from RLD can be a lot like the bus on the corner (if you miss it, wait 15 minutes and another one will come along), there is enough deviation from the house style by their "name" directors that I can rent or buy stuff made by individuals -- not assembly line robots. I'm always gonna be down for No Cum Dodging Allowed and Throat Gaggers , and if I want to see a new new NEW girl, that's probably the company that will have her first.

For me, I haven't really cared for most of the PXP titles I've seen, whereas I've found several RLD titles that I really like. I don't like to watch established stars in gonzo (esp. once they've gone through surgery). And RLD seems to be cheaper than PXP overall.

But it's totally a personal preference thing.

For me, I prefer RLD because they care more about the creampie viewing needs of the public.

Basically RLD is a clone/copycat of Anabolic/Diabolic..They film and have the sorts of movies/scenes exactly like Ana/Dia. PXP owners should of waited a lil while before selling out to see if sales would pick up. If you have 30 RLD Movies to every 10 PXP Movies then yes of course they are going to be more popular. I'm glad Jewel didn't sell out her share to bigger kids.

I think a lot of it is branding - RLD has better brand recognition than PXP. Red Light District is a better name for a porn company, their boxcovers are better, they place a strong emphasis on newer talent, they have one of the best groups of directors of any studio, and their quality is consistently very good to excellent (with the occasional bomb). They also have a much more targeted marketing approach than PXP, emphasizing very specific fetishes, i.e. anal, swallowing, cum fart swallowing, double anal, dp, lingerie, etc. PXP has also become much more targeted in their marketing lately, but still not to the extent of an RLD. PXP seems to leave a little more room for their directors to do what they want.

But, I think both companies fit within an overall vision of the marketplace that makes sense. I mean, RLD can only put out a certain number of titles before they start cannibalizing their own sales and diluting their brand. In fact, I would imagine they've already run into that. It's the law of diminishing marginal returns. But, with PXP, they can put out a product that is at least somewhat differentiated from the RLD brand, while at the same time gaining economy of scale by sharing resources and distribution.

I couldn't agree more.

Looking over my DVD collection I own half as many PX movies as I do RLD, but it's only because RL has been around longer.

Both produce fast paced fuck flicks without any real art to film making there the kind of movies u watch once maybe twice then sell them on ebay.

I find once u seen 1 movie from them u seen em all.

where as evil angel produce quality movies which become classics in there own right Each director has there own style. They also know how to get the best from there performers!

It makes a difference when your not just init for the $$$$

You're exactly right.
I too haven't seen enough of Manuel's work to comment, but Everhard's is not cookie cutter either. He is, to my surprise(I don't know why I'm surprised, but I am), one of my favorite directors. Ass Obsessed is one of the best series.

Also I think VV's POV stuff is out of this owrld.

I also watch a great deal of PXP, so perhaps I'm not one to compare, .

I think that RLD simply took over the mantle from Anabolic/Diabolic in producing “PORN BY NUMBERS” basically you know what you are going to get when you buy the dvd because the titles say it all, let‘s see Black on Black, Black Dicks in White Chicks etc. – porn for no brainers??
RLD seem to be best at producing no thrills h/c at the moment, but they rely heavily on finding new talent and getting that talent out to the public first, but recently they have been doing neither, plus I do not think that a few name changes to titles along the way are going to save them in the long run as I reckon they might run out of steam kind of like Anabolic/Diabolic unless they change direction a bit.

For me the king of gonzo is Joey Silvera, Fun, Fresh, Shocking, Extreme Art dressed up as porn, he seems to get the best out of every performer both male and female and pushes them to their limits.

I think Platinum is breaking new ground by involving more black chicks into the scheme of things. ass2 mouth , steve holmes' perversions and moniques perversions are great examples of this . not including chix in the mix which will be a great series when they start letting the girls get a little bit nastier.

As you might know, I direct for PXP and I work for all the directors at PXP and RLD. We are all like a big family. At the moment Erik Everhard, Mike Stefano and I are together in Prague and we all work for each other.

We at PXP are pretty confident that we will soon reach the numbers RLD is doing. They started before but we get all the support from RLD that we need.
