Over the years, one of my biggest peeves with porn has been with what seems to be deliberate blurring of the model's skin. This is particularly true on still pictures but crops up in video porn from time to time.
I understand airbrushing out a few distracting blemishes but just hitting the whole picture with a digital spray can of blurry really just kills it most of the time. There are very rare cases when it does enhance the "ambiance" of a photo but I get the distinct impression they couldn't care less.
And boy is it pervasive! Especially with still pictures of Japanese women. I can't remember the last time I saw a quality picture of an Asian woman that wasn't blurry as all hell. It's like the holy grail when I can actually make out surface detail on Asian skin.
Even when there doesn't seem to be any deliberate blurring, porn seems to be shot in a way that leaves you more with a sketchy outline of a woman's features more than anything else.

^ What do you expect, with Obama's Socialist plot to nationalize the porn industry, and give porn jobs that Americans don't want to do to illegal immigrants?

Is it possible that many companies have decided to hire less professional photographers and therefore the quality of the finish product is not as good as when using someone who knows how to use a camera and also understands the importance of proper lighting. The only solution is to try and fix the problem using software but you are still trying to improve on a product of lesser quality and one of the way to do that is to blur the errors.
Another huge problem is that somebody decided that natural looking meant that the women couldn't look real. Has there been a single woman's magazine that hasn't used photoshop to remove all possible blemishes, dimples, skin marks, age/smile lines, crows feet and every other possible things that make a human face look real.

While I'm in complaining mode, what is that godawful yellow cast everything seems to have in a lot of porn. I used to think it was just the indoor lighting they use but it seems a lot of the girls have a horrible yellowish tint to their skin in many outdoor scenes as well.
Is it just my monitor? White pages look white enough to me here and I do see the occasional photo and/or video where skin colors look natural.
Is it some kind of spray on tan that they just spray everyone down with thinking it looks sexy? I'm not a big fan of tans anyway but this doesn't look like any kind of natural tan I've ever seen.
Are they (perhaps) using the wrong kind of fluorescent lights that have a much yellower color temp and then mixing that with natural daylight or something?
Whatever it is, it's like the air itself in some porn is a sickly yellow.

Yes, I've noticed a yellow tint to some porn scenes, like one with Esperanza Gomez, in "Confessions over cocktails 2". Did they use a yellow filter on the camera lens or is it the lighting in the room?
I noticed a marked difference between the quality of the picture when the industry started to produce porn on video tape vs. film. Now it seems like directors are trying to capture the soft focus of the old classic titles.
Of course, you'll have people complain about the detail of BlueRay titles, as being too much, with warts and blemishes visable. I like a clear, well focused porn title vs. blurry ones.

Some actresses have signs of some abuse (meth?) in their face and are not good to see, nothing too bad yet, but a pic often catch too many details , more than you can see with a free eye.

The advent of HD camera is probably a part of the problem. Very few of us are gifted with beautiful skin and an HD camera is only going to make a normal skin condition look worse.
I suspect the yellow tint might be from fake tan spray. On the plus side it's a lot healtier than tanning booth or excessive sun tanning outside.

I think I know what you mean, but I would call it "smudging" instead of blurring. There is a filter similar to what you can find in photoshop that tends to smudge a field of similar color to the same color and removing detail but keeping edges and transitions. I initially believed it was compression artifacts since it looks similar, but it seems to be done on purpose. There might be regular blurring on top of it but I think this is a distinct thing. It is even more efficient in removing skin detail than the good old blur but it leaves you with an even worse, cartoonish, annoying image.
Some good 90s movies and some later ones as well (particularly from Private) used a soft or "fog" filter. I actually don't mind that, it adds to the fantasy/surrealness, and it doesn't worsen detail much if at all.

There is a lot wrong with porn, some of it has been going on for years.
I absolutely can't stand when they tint skin color to a yellowish, orange color. I never understood this but I think it is to cover up skin blemishes.
Vivid and Wicked studios are among the most annoying that do this continually.
The best sex scenes are ones that look the most natural and real. That means girls dressed like ordinary women, not city street hookers, not loaded with makeup, not in 3 inch heels and not in gaudy outfits.
Perhaps some directors can better explain it.
Like it or hate it, but Dave Cummings, Ed Powers and Tyce Bune products do it right. The girls are natural looking.

I do dislike the gaudy outfits but I have to say I'm a fan of the shoes. I like all sorts of shoes, really but the heels can be really sex. To put it another way, I guess I have a shoe fetish.
Though I guess it's possible some guys have a neon fishnet fetish, I've rarely (if ever) seen or heard anyone express it. And yet you see that kind of stuff in porn pretty much all the time.
I guess it's sufficient to say that the blurring and the ugly color tinting (and sometimes just plain poor white balance) is a manifestation of the same thinking that goes into having women dressed up in clothing that isn't sexy at all.

I really do not know what goes on in the mind of the directors and sometimes can't think of anything that would appeal to the masses as they film the way they do.
All I can say is I can't stand a lot of it, so I just fast-forward the DVD.
My take is the people in charge calling all the shots are frankly CLUELESS and do not know what the masses prefer who view porn.
They are not interested in public opinion, they deliver what fits their taste. It is my way or the highway.
Basic marketing, you have to produce what the public wants to sell it.

I notice in a lot of Evil Angel movies flesh tones appear orange to me. Nearly all of their titles have this effect IMO. Also I love Rocco Siffredi's work but all of his titles seem "washed out" to me. Something always seems messed up with contrast in his movies. IMO Private studios always have realistic colours and flesh tones. This debate could go on for a very very long time.

I hadn't noticed it in porn, but one of the Resident Evil films blurred Milla Jovanovitch something awful...
