This is sort of a poll, so I am not sure if this belongs here or not. But I would like to see industry people answer this, so I didn't want to put it in the polls. Meh.

Why does AVN still have two separate categories between Film and Video?

Of course, I understand the obvious differences, the recording media. But I don't understand the need anymore for two different categories. Obviously, there are major differences in Gonzo and Feature, and that's fine. I just don't see the difference between film and video.

I am not being totally naive here, I understand Vivid and Wicked almost run alone here in the film categories and they buy many pages in the monthy magazine. There are twice as many people nominated for awards, i.e. Best Actress in a..., and so on.

If they still want two categories, I think they need to change it to budget size. Pick an arbitrary number and go from there.

Opinions and/or thoughts?

You actually need some degree of skill to capture usable images on film. Video you can virtually rely on the factory settings... not that anyone in porn does that. :-)

Retaining the film category also adds a little bit of incentive for studios to go through the expense and effort of producing films. I think that's a good thing.

If not I don't see the point of this category (yeah I know "shot on film" but still...).

So you see why there has to be Best Gonzo Release, Best Gonzo Series, Best Vignette Release, Best Vignette Series, Best All-Sex Release and Best Continuing Video Series, but you think Video and Film are too similar to split up?

No, I don't see why some of those are given either, continuing series, especially. An award for not having an original series, yay. The film vs. video is the most glaring, IMHO. They are both features, regardless on the medium they are shot on. I also agree with Joey's comments. These aren't shown in theaters, so aren't you just differentiating about which medium is used for the inevitable transfer to DVD and tape?

I am all for rewarding those who continue to use skill and talent to work with film. Anything to inspire new ideas and bring something new to the industry is fine. To me this could be a technical category reward rather than content.

For example, is there any difference in your mind when you watch a movie shot on film as opposed to video? Is the difference between Catherine, Dark Angels 2, Pirates, or Lover's Lane and The Devil in Miss Jones, Eternity, Darkside, or the Villa that noticable?

I guess I just don't see it.

Which ones of those were shot on film?

Just out of curiosity as to who bothers with it, that is.
Like yourself I really couldn't care a whole lot less what a movie's original medium is, as long as the final DVD looks good.
There are too many other problem areas in DVD authoring where porn studios often stumble.
And that's without getting into whether the content is any good in the first place.

All that aside, if AVN wants two categories, I've got nothing against it.
Personally I couldn't even name a single past AVN winner anyway. Could you?
