I just started checking out Lover's Lane , which is once again shot in widescreen HD. The movie starts, and once again Wicked has gone for a non-anamorphic transfer! From the hype around this one I thought this was to be one of their major releases, a release that makes everybody go "WOW!". Instead, my first reaction is "Gee, if Digital Playground did this they would have cared enough to give it the anamorphic transfer it deserves.". With Brad Armstrong, Jonathan Morgan, Michael Raven, and now David Stanley making some top notch features it's too bad that Wicked doesn't care enough about the movies they make to give them the best possible appearance.

Less porn pixels for us then. That bites. Apart from some more bits taken up on the DVD, surely it doesn't cost anything extra to do an anamorphic transfer.
I think the only anamorphic Wicked release I've got is Space Nuts, and that's almost completely ruined by extreme colour shifting.
I love their movies, but it seems like they just can't get the damn transfers right.
It probably costs a little more for an anamorphic transfer, but if you're going to go all out on a movie then go all out! You don't woo your prom date for months only to take her to McDonalds on the big night! Then again, Wicked's crapping on the widescreen format was a big part of why I called them one of the most disappointing studios of last year...

Anamorphic means that the black bars you see on a standard (1.33:1) screen for a widescreen film are created by the player. If watched on a widescreen television (1.78:1) set the black bars are reduced in size as the actual picture doesn't include them.
Non-anamorphic means that the black bars are part of the picture and never go away. It also means that part of the pixel range given to the picture is allocated by the black bars meaning the picture isn't as good as an anamorphic release.
Unless it was released in the first two years that DVD's were being made, it's almost guaranteed that a widescreen DVD of a mainstream movie is anamorphic.
On DVD cases, it will usually say something like "enhanced for widrecreen TV's".
It could be that they don't want to be the "guinea pig" for their author's first attempt at an anamorphic release.
Most of the companies working on adult DVD's are only working on adult DVD's and have never done an anamorphic DVD. I can understand how a company wouldn't want to be the project that the author uses to learn to do something.
I don't necessarily agree with it, but I can understand it.
Now I don't want to go on a rant here, but... Space Nuts and Euphoria were both anamorphic, and I think there was one other but I'm not sure. I could kind of understand it if this one of Wicked's first widescreen projects, but the majority of what I'm seeing from Brad Armstrong and especially Michael Raven seem to be shot in the widescreen format. They also seemed to be taking their time making sure they got everything just as they wanted for Lovers Lane , and the non-anamorphic format cheapened the entire movie for me. If you're going to be an "industry leader", then lead the friggin' industry.

I wonder if it has something to do with David Crawford leaving Wicked a few years back as their primary DVD producer...I believe SPACE NUTS was the last title David produced (or around there)...since that release, NO Wicked movies have been anamorphic.
I felt the same way as Astro...why shoot something in HD, if you're not going to anamorphically enhance the disc you release? It's a shame, because this was the best movie to come out from Wicked in a long, long time. Possibly this year's best feature (depending on the quality of those "big" releases that will be coming in the next few months).
Both of those titles were completely fucked up by the same halo problem that palgued PXP for about a year (the Wicked & PXP titles were authored by the same company). So, as far as I'm concerned, they haven't successfully released an error-free anamorphic DVD.
I'm not disagreeing with your point that they should have done Lover's Lane in anamorphic widescreen. But I don't agree that you can used those two titles as examples where they have done a good job doing widescreen.
But he was saying that since they had already done anamorphic widescreen twice, they have no reason not to do it a third time.
My point is that they are currently 0 for 2 (qualitywise) when they have released anamorphic widescreen. Failing twice is not a good justification for trying a third time.
That's not what I was saying. A point was made that Wicked has already have made two anamorphic widescreen titles, so there is no reason why they shouldn't do this in widescreen as well.
My point was that they did a shitty job with both of those anamorphic widescreen titles. So you can't use those first two titles as an example of the fact that they are capable of doing a good anamorphic widescreen title.
I agree that, in a perfect world, all widescreen titles should be anamorphic. But if a company proves themselves to be incompetent at making anamorphic discs, as Wicked (or at least the company that Wicked has hired) has done so far, I'd rather see them do non-anamporphic until they get their shit together and hire someone who's competent.
As far as I'm concerned, a well done non-anamorphic disc is better than a poorly done anamorphic one. So far all Wicked has put out in anamorphic are two crappy DVD's.
I can't disagree with that. I do think it raises the question on whether Wicked is really an 'industry leader' anymore with their DVDs. I'll admit that I'm not as up on their products as I used to be, but from what I've seen it looks like they're releasing one or two movies in the widescreen format a month. They started trying to do anamorphic two years ago, and the number of widescreen movies they're releasing has went up significantly since that time. If you change the format of your product and can't get your shit together in two years to do things right, instead choosing to use a lesser format to present your product, are you really an "industry leader" any more?
