I'm not much of Mary Carey fan but it doesn't make much sense in my mind. Mary Carey is one of the most known porn stars in terms of mainstream media. She pops up in mainstream press fairly regularly. Yet, she doesn't seem to be that big a deal in the world of porn. Her notoriety doesn't seem to help her porn career that much. Why isn't she a bigger porn star? I can see that see isn't the greatest performer in terms of sex scenes but that doesn't seem to affect other well known porn stars stardom/success. Why is it different with Mary Carey? What is she doing wrong?
Let me start the off by saying I am a huge Mary Carey fan and I have lot of her Kick Ass stuff but I can fully understand why people do not like her and I feel there are multiple reasons. First off her personality (fake ditsy or not) is a turn off to many people. She has lied multiple times about whether or not she has had enhancements. She originally came in with a rubenesque type body and now she looks completely different, therefore leaving that audience behind. She is a publicity monger (dinner with Bush anyone?)and I think her "running for governor, president or chief water buffalo" paints the industry in a bad light, takes away credibility and perpetuates stereotypes. I still find it strange that the industry doesn't seem to pay any attention to her, retailers don't seem particularly care about her and porn fans seem fairly indifferent to her. Usually any porn star who gets any sort of mainstream attention has their porn career reach higher hieghts. Mary Carey's career seems to be pretty much the same as it was before all the mainstream exposure.
trust me...her movies sell. She just doesn't have a lot of them. Or at least, not 9000 of them like other pornstars. Plus I think she may have substance issues. Also I heard that she may be coming out as a Republican. In Porn Valley, all fetishes are accepted except this one. I like her because she always seems happy. Yeah, she's a big star. No bones about that. Do a poll of the average American, and a thousand times as many will know Mary over an Amy Reid or an Olivia Olovely.
IMO, one big reason Mary is not a "bigger star" in the biz is that she is not respected. Yes...she may be known by a large number of the non-porn public, especially here in Cali because of her run for Governor. And being "known" may help sell her sexvids. But her run for Governor is viewed by many people (me among them) as another example of Mary using "others" to get herself publicity. If you Google Mary's name (and I have) and read all the published articles she was in over the past five years or so, the overwhelming majority would be articles in which she attempts to "link" herself to someone more famous (in porn or mainstream) or some public event. Sometimes positive (the Republican dinner, running for Governor) but just as likely negatively (the Mariah Carey "name" lawsuit, Mary & others being drunk in public/YouTube, cable tv). Worst, IMO, Mary loves to mention, by name, other performers/celebs who have done dumb things, or things they may/should be ashamed of. In other words: she "outs" other people's embarrassments...sometimes with photos. Her actions have clearly hurt other people, in/out of the biz--which is not to say that what she says about these people is untrue. And, yes, some of these people may forgive/later make-up with Mary. Still the fact that Mary constantly uses others in this way is more than a little bit skanky. So many folks do not have "warm" feelings about Mary. And it will be interesting to see if Mary wins the "cross-over" AVN this year. She is in the up-coming VH-1 "Celebrity Rehab" show...but is being in rehab (which may not have succeeded with Mary, because she still drinks) the type of publicity the industry wants to reward with the "cross over" star award? Bottom line: Mary has a lot of personal negatives to live down. And IMO it won't be easy.
Mary Carey is probably one of the most overrated pornstars ever. She's great at the art of marketing herself but she's hardly a pornstar. I'd put her on a list with Bobby Trendy, Janice Dickerson, Johnny Fairplay b/f Jenna Jameson and Ginger Lynn. As far as being better known than Amy Reid by the avg American, William Hung is probably better known the Eva Cassidy(if you never heard her goto Youtube and thank me later).
shit!, I like Mary better now than I did when she first came about. Guys, you're forgetting her numerous appearances on the Stern show, most notably with her late grandmother & her mother whom if I remember didn't have all her marbles. But Draxxx's question is an excellent one. Carey and her Stern appearances have worked in the opposite direction in comparison with for instance Jenna Jameson's Stern appearances(including his movie Private Parts) which has boosted her porn career. I don't know, maybe the times have just changed and there are so many pornstars now. There were when Jameson came along too but I still can't figure out her popularity which has to do with more than just Stern. I've seen Mary in a number of fuck mags recently and she looks fabulous. She's a blond that has a distinct look about her that nobody else has. She also has a pretty & noticeable crack which looks great in a centerfold. I agree with the others that said she doesn't do anal, IR, b/g, blowbang and the like. A few hesitant b/g scenes that's all. So these might contribute to why she hasn't been a bigger porno star. Maybe this thread will induce Mary to come on to ADT and talk in the forums. Who knows?
Not a lot of B/G would be chief amongst the reasons. The lack of heat in the B/G's she has done would be reason 2. The last would be that she hasn't done the gonzo circuit. No PXP, RLD, Diabolic, JJ, Evil Angel, Elegant Angel or even Digital Playground.
As strange as it may sound, I find her sexier on Stern than in her porn movies. I never heard of Mary Carey until I saw her on Stern. That was back before he was on inDemand and you could see everything. Even though I thought she was of average in the face I wanted to see what the rest of the package looked like so I bought I think her only B/G video at the time. I was bored before the actual intercourse began. Her performance was very mediocre. I haven't watched it or a B/G scene with her since. Yet strangely enough I actually like watching her in the CINAMAX movies she does. So I guess I'm basically a fan of seeing hers but not her in real sex scenes...Actually, now that I think about it I was a fan of her breasts. Other than the breasts, I don't find her to be that big a deal.
But when someone like Jenna or Tera who don't have 9000 movies out either put out new product it's usually a big deal. Mary puts out a new movie and no one from the industry to the retailers to consumer seems to pay much attention.Yeah, they know her but no one seems to really care. I'd bet that Amy on the cover of a DVD box would move more product than Mary would.

Maybe the fact that a lot of her titles never get distributed.I have yet to see any Mary Carey b/g titles in any of the porn stores in my section of Connecticut. I have to assume that is true for other areas of the country as well.
her name is way more recognized than most especially considering how few scenes she has actually done. I don't see how she could actually be any bigger of a star, she even gets the coveted crossover attention she is a huge star, but she doesn't have a lot of fans, if that makes much sense
I'd ask this same question about Harley Raine. Porn's greatest eyeball-roller is also very good in the head department. She started out in the amateur ranks but dips in and out of porn ala Keisha. I'd ask the exact opposite of Stormy Daniels. Why is she a big star? Does the most 'paper-mache' porn out there, that is girl-girl & condom only. Would love to see Stormy tear a page out of Jenna Haze's book and ratchet it up a bit. She has a great set of enhanced tits that deserve to be put to better use in some gonzo. I cast no shadows over Stormy, she deserves all her accolades, but would love to see her for instance in a good dp or IR(with a male not IR girl-girl) scene or with some young newcomer dude ie James Deen.

And I really don't think AVN is supporting the industry's image by nominating Mary for the "Cross-Over Star" award. IMO the nominees for Cross-Over should project a positive image of the adult biz to the mainstream world. Being an annoying person, who tells other peoples' secrets, and drinks too much does not qualify. BTW, class: who do you think told Vivid that a Jessica Sierra sex tape existed? I say "interesting post" right back at you. IMO there's nothing wrong with wanting to be "the next Jenna". If being the "next Jenna" is about having money in the bank, control over your career/product, and respect from the majority of the other performers. All of which (only) Jenna had during her years at the top of the adult biz. And, it's not about bringing "something new to the table" that makes a porn girl's career. Honesty, dependability, hard-work, appealing to a wide variety of porn customers' taste, and not embarrassing yourself--or the industry--are important. For too many performers, it takes them years to figure out that these are the important things that will make them successful. And, getting back to Mary, she doesn't seem to have figured it out yet.

Ironic that she was just on Fox news again the other day. Tried to contribute some money or something and was rebuffed by the people she was trying to give it to.
The Holiday Season from mid-December thru early January is a period where all people try to "give" and show love for one/another--and especially those down on their luck. If Mary wants to give money, there are many ways in which she can do so...and in the spirit of the Season, it should be accepted. There are people at all layers of society that give during the Holiday Season..and it's accepted. From Celebrities feeding the poor at Soup Kitchens, to mystery men giving out dollar bills on the street, to strippers at clubs raising money for kids' toys, to drug dealers giving money to a church. Given Mary's long history of doing things only for their publicity value, I'm skeptical that she could only find someone who would publicly reject her donation. No, it wouldn't be the same question because Harley as far as I know never had constant national exposure. I'm a huge fan of Harley and wish she'd been bigger star but I totally understand why she isn't. In fact, if I had to explain why I like her it would be hard to explain. I just ought a DVD yesterday just because Harley was in a scene.I don't think I've ever seen a Stormy D. scene but I can understand quite easily why she's a star. She's good looking, smart, works for a major company and she's a contract girl. She also has a plan on where she wants to take her career and puts in the work. Personally, Stormy does nothing for me. But I have to acknowledge that's a strange thing. I acknowledge that Stormy is very good looking and better looking than someone like Harley and may even be a better performer but I have personality traits/tastes that draw me to a Harley Raine while I ignore the prettier Stormy. That's not to say I think Harley is "ugly" in any way shape or form but I know she isn't in Stormy's league in the looks department in my opinion. There are plenty of girls in porn I think are pretty that I have no interest in and a long list of girls who aren't as pretty I can't get enough of. Really? I always thought Mary was the anti-Jenna. Mary doesn't even seem to really care that much about her porn career in my opinion. It seems like it's something she just does. Mary seems to mostly be concerned about having fun and the porn stuff allows her to do that.
