It's not really that rare. You're just a couple of years too late. It was a fad. Like so many porn fads, everyone was doing it for awhile. Which is pretty unfortunate because if there was one thing we didn't need, it was a fad like face slapping. Butt smacking is pretty hot and obviously doesn't carry the same negative connotations. I still see that done well from time to time.
