I don't really have any metrics to prove this, it's just based on personal observation, the only major company that I know of is marc dorcel. A re there any financial/regulatory barriers to shooting in france, or are french porn starlets less likely to shoot in some of the other countries where american production companies may have a stronger prescence? Production companies have been sunking one after another. The only ones left who provide quality movies today are Video Marc Dorcel (aka Dorcel) and maybe Alkrys (but they can't be compared in terms of budgets and assets). The "could have" challenger, V-Communications, seriously slowed down its productions and with it, the casting quality. Still, JTC is the most active in terms of movie creations, but they remain middle-range market. So, who wants to launch into a porn career in a depressing market ? Keep in mind that prices sink together with the market. Add another fact : France is the only west-european country where model agencies are forbidden, as their activity could be assimilated to proxenetism (prostitution over there is legally "tolerated" but not legalized). Thus, each girl is left on her own and no one manages her wages and image. On top of this, most of french people is not really fluent with english. Now consider that an actress barely has advanced diplomas, so they don't master english, which is a "need to have". While eastern girls, thanks to their country educational systems (and because Czech and Magyar are less worlwide glamour than french) do, for most of them, have a correct english level... Worst. French porn industry has developped a "porn-with-condom" approach. Some kind of politically correct porn. Many porn actresses in France are proud of refusing to work otherhow. Another hint ? French girls and productions aim at featured movies to be broadcasted on french Pay TV, "Canal Plus". Gives them wider audience exposure (and I guess some payback in cash) But Canal Plus is hands tied to the french censorship comitee (CSA) when it comes to broadcasting porn. • No sex without condom (again) • No more than 2 (or 3 I don't know) fingers in a pussy • No cumshots on genitals (and I think inside the mouth) • No spitting or slapping (degrading acts towards women) This has created a generation of actresses who run for poor porn performances. And who would, for most of them, consider foreign porn performances as degrading and brutal. Still, a few ones think differently, or have more guts. It started a few years ago with Melissa Lauren and Katsuni. Then comes what I like to call the "new breed" : Megane, Stella Delcroix, Cecilia Vega... Will they be pornstars ? Difficult to say. They certainly have the capacities for that. But today's true pornstars are grown in the US. And getting working visas over here is getting extremely difficult.
