Hi to all. I imagine that question has been made a lot for years. So I'll try to explain myself. I have to write some short histories and part of the storyline is set in porn biz. Why? simple, is kinky, attracts people and is a cool business for get it mixed in some thriller plot. So I am doing a research about how the biz works, its past/present/future, discussed with some people, watched some works related with the backside and all these things. Buy I have some unsolved problems regarding the most important people in the business, the performers. Both male and female. I live in Spain. Here in Europe we have a completely different idiosyncrasy, specially in mediterranean countries. Porn is something that keeps secret, below the society. You ask and the people don't know, of don't want to know, that there are porn studios and a porn industry. They think is something that happen in US, Japan and Netherlands. Not the other countries. And of course, all performers are prostitutes from Eastern countries, South America and guys. Even in straight porn, all the male talents are guys. Why? because they are sinners. I think you start to see the way in society here. So I started to look for information about the US industry. And sincerely, internet is full if shit. The anti-porn groups, feminist, religion, ... For me is very difficult to go into the psychology of a performer. Never been in a porn studio, neither spoke with talents. Only a fan and consumer. I interviewed some high level escorts a couple of years ago for another history but they weren't into porn. Even not considering it. Translating the sex-act from a private room to a visual media is still a big jump. Even for stablished sex workers. Someone suggested me to contact people in the industry. So I did. I send some mails and have decided to put this here so hopefully someone can help me, point me in the good direction, or make suggestions, comments..... My concerns are: - What makes a pretty and young girl going into porn business? money? fame? sex addiction? .... - The same for male talents, why are they working in porn? very few have money or fame so ... - How they feel? how they live? both of them. I've seen a lot of interviews and the whorish sex addicted woman in porn is more a legend. Found too many of them having sad and incomplete lives. But they continue working, why? is not family support? ... I know that these questions probably have been made before but I hope to obtain real and true answers. I have not interest in the porn actresses' thoughts and wishes, I have interest in the women's behind (or inside) the porn girl thought and wishes. And the same for men. Our State Television third Channel (RAI 3) last year made a study about the financial crisis of porn particularly of Italian porn , Silvio Bandinelli a porn director and producer was the main interview in there , it was made in PRIME TIME.Selen has a show on recipes she teaches how to cook , Eva Henger also works on TV often , Anita Blond was a regular guest on a night show and was interviewed to provide some funny inside anecdotes on porn sets every week. Cicciolina still runs for elections, Claudia Antonelli was hosted on some shows , Omar Galanti helped some reporters to discover some hoaxes faking impotence which given his job he didn't suffer of. Recently on TV has been aired a fiction on the life of Moana Pozzi, an extremely famous and renown pornstar who died for liver cancer it was called: Guardami (Watch Me) Franco Trentalance an Italian talent took part to L'Isola dei Famosi , a show like survivor but made with known people. The Chairman of our Parliament who is a woman when someone in protest voted Rocco Siffredi for President , said he wasn't of age, having no problem to admit she knew who he was but also she knew of him more than many , I for first didn't know his actual age, she did. There are dozens of examples. Here there's nothing hidden about that , though you may have problems shooting some judges see porn no differently than prostitution and may charge a producer as a pimp or something similar, some others don't.
There is no one clear cut answer. Every girl has a different story and reason for getting into porn, but here are some of the big ones (in no particular order). Trouble at Home We all know the cliche "daddy issues" remark, but often times this is true. Broken homes and/or abuse lead girls to cry out for love and attention, often in harmful ways. 3. Sex Girls like sex too, and some girls LOVE sex. If you're a nympho and proud of it, might as well make a living out of it and get fucked by some stallions. 4. Peer Pressure/Influence Some may have friends that do it, some may hear stories of how lucrative it is, and some may hear "Damn girl you should do porn!" often enough that they decide it's not such a bad idea. 5. Celebrity Who wouldn't want to be the next Jenna Jameson (well, maybe not in her current form)? Porn stars are celebrities and receive adoration of their fans. All girls, on some level, want/need love and attention, even if it is from guys who whack it to them. 6. The Lifestyle Porn stars enjoy great money, a relaxed work setting (if you consider fucking all day work), free travel and the party lifestyle. Not to mention the 7. Drugs and Partying The dark side of porn, the party lifestyle keeps some girls hooked and they need to keep doing scenes or even escorting to keep up with the habit. More porn leads to more partying and more drugs, and thus you have your vicious circle. 8. It's so easy! This should probably be higher, but order be damned! Looking at the porn industry as an outsider, it looks like a pretty sweet gig. All I have to do is lay on my back and suck a dick or two. I doubt few girls see the true story before getting in.
So to revert back to the beginning, each girl has a different story. Some do it to make money to get through school or support their family, some do it for fame and some just love sex and being a career porn star. To truly answer your question, you should ask each and every single one of them. And shoot a scene or take a pic while you're at it (or at least grab some boobage) ;)

How big we view the world we grew up in, how we were raised, our intelligence, our desires, our perceived ability, necessity. I imagine you could pick any job, and find a wide range of reasons that people do them. I don't think porn stars are any different that people with other jobs, it's just the view that society has about porn that makes them stand out. I see a person emptying a septic tank, and a person filming a sex scene, and my first thought would be that at least with the sex scene, that person might be enjoying their job. ^ I think that any "rambling" is largely due to your not being a native English speaker. Some people will understand this and be tolerant. Others, unfortunately, feel some need to mock this. Honestly, your posts are difficult to follow. The reason is that we are forced to constantly consider what it is you're actually trying to say. I'm in the understanding and tolerant group, so keep trying. In my opinion, many of the answers here are merely rehashing all the standard stock "reasons." I think there is much more to it, including performers getting into porn because they want to. Many, including myself, consider porn to be a viable career option. Also, with traditional stigmas disappearing among those under 30 -- the age group that most of the active performers fall into -- there is certainly a lot more freedom to pursue porn than even just 10 years ago. It's like the whole "Don't ask; Don't tell" controversy regarding Gays in the military. As far as the under 30's are concerned, it was really more like Don't ask; Don't care. The times are a changing. Gay, straight, porn, etc., fewer and fewer people could care less. I'm not saying that there are not consequences to some individuals. Likely sources of grief still include older parents and family, boyfriends/girlfriends/spouses and future employers -- especially in occupations like school teachers (e.g. "we've got to protect the children" nonsense) and politics (i.e. "gotcha"). God help you if you're outed during a slow news-cycle This too will change.

^ I don't know about this. Despite porn becoming more "mainstream" as time goes on and the growing percentage of the population that views porn in some form, I still believe that the majority of Americans, even the under 30 crowd, view the porn biz and porn performers in a negative light. I think the stigma still exists for most in this country that pornstars, females specifically, are nothing more than whores and are no better than hookers on the street. Also, I don't agree with the homosexuality-working in porn comparison that you make, as far as society's acceptance of the two. Society has become more and more accepting of homosexuality because more and more people realize that for gays & lesbians it's not a matter of them choosing to be gay, most in society understand that they're gay because it's who they are as a person and that person can't change who they are. On the other hand, for those who do porn it is a choice, and much of society will continue to stigmatize someone, especially a female, who chooses to work in that profession.

As to another topic brought up in this thread: "Why isn't porn as big in Europe as it is in the United States?" I would assume that a big reason why is because most of Europe, western Europe (i.e. Spain, Italy, France and Germany) at least, have societies that are much more open to sexuality, especially when it comes to nudity and sex on television. Another term to describe them, I guess, would be that they are more "sexually mature" than the still prude-ish USA, where nudity on network TV is still a no-no, but gun violence is a-okay. This society still insists on preventing the masses from viewing nudity and sex, but yet our media constantly teases us with sexual situations in TV shows and sexually provactive commercials (hell, I often feel the need to watch some porn after watching the weather forecast because the woman on the news doing it is unbelievably hot!) I guess the more you restrict people from doing something, or in this case seeing something, the more obsessed those people will be with what you're restricting. An example of this would be the recent report that the state of Utah, the most conservative and religious state in this country, has the highest rate of porn site subscriptions per capita. Finally, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't prostitution legal in much of Europe, at least those western European countries I mentioned? I would guess that'd be another reason why porn isn't as big over there as it is here.

There're some places like Barcelona where the government wants to remove it from the streets but keep it legal in brothels, clubs, .... And there're not too big concerns about nudity or sex debate on TV. But porn, or even prostitution, has still some taboo issues attached. I understand the fact that porn is a business. And a lot of women involved will see it as a job. Maybe a job they don't like at all, but a valuable source of income. I believe most of us have worked in places we hated but we did for the payment. Take the money, go home and try to rest and forget the job problems. But it's difficult for me to imagine that almost all girls in hard stuff like "Meatholes" , "Max Hardcore", ... enjoyed the shot and after it went home stopping in Mac Donalds to buy the dinner. Maybe I'm wrong and I am a bit naive regarding all of this.

I am not religious, neither I have problems with the people working in porn or sex business. My concern, and questions, are more oriented to the real girls behind the porn stars. Well , there's a debate in Italy about this, to prostitute themselves is not illegal , pimping is, exploiting prostitutes is, so it goes with the judge , some consider the john as an exploiter and may prosecute him, but it's difficult , in some streets for example it resulted impossible so to remove some hookers from the streets they begun to fine those who stopped the traffic to deal with the hooker. Brothels are illegal , the owner is considered a pimp , in strip clubs you can't get privates other than a dance , the owner would be seen as a pimp , plus the girls must be there legally , with passport and working permit at least as a dancer. The debate is about brothels there are so many hookers in some places , that hooking on the street has been outlawed , although for traffic reasons not prostitution. To remove those hookers we need to reopen brothels but there's a strong political and religious resistance , it is considered immoral for the Country to get taxes from such activity , and is considered immoral to rule over this sinful profession by Church. The freedom of choice of the individuals who want to be a prostitute is granted though. Age of consent is 18 , either to strip, to enter a strip club , to drink , in most of Europe after turning eighteen you're fully adult , can do anything and are legally responsible for everything you do.
In Spain prostitution is legal. Any adult, if he/she desires, can do it. No problem with the authorities. It is not recognized as a job, so no taxes but no insurances and free health attention. Brothels are not legal, but there are a lot. How they work? as hotels. The owner rent the girls some rooms, their work place. Inside the rooms the girl can do whatever she wants. So the country is full of brothels that suppose to be hotels. And they are not hidden; the lights, the names, .... Is clear what is going on inside. Also a lot of men and women prostitutes themselves in rented flats. There is of course the other side, the exploited women into prostitution. Mainly they're South American and Eastern Europe mafias which employ women from those countries. Even underage girls. Very sad and usually some gross news in the TV about them. So now we have here a social debate; completely legalice the prostitution as a proper job? keep it under the table? ... The situation sometimes is weird. In Madrid there is one street famous for its prostitutes, Montera Street. Years ago was a creepy and dangerous place so the government opened a police station. The delinquency moved away and the prostitutes stayed. They are african black women and women from eastern countries, so probably they are being exploited by a mafia. But as the prostitutes are not doing anything illegal the police can not approach them and help them. Crazy world.

I'll give a shot at an intelligent answer. The dark side of porn usually stems from the social and religious stigmas attached to it. Society doesn't make it easy for these women who have taken this career path. Why can't adult film acting be treated just like any other job? It is because the age old taboos of human sexuality that people fear. "selling your body" can be regarded as a simple service. Just like delivering pizzas. The pizza delivery guy faces job hazards just like any other job. Being robbed or shot in the face as he delivers a pie is a risk the pizza deliveryman takes. My point just like any other job there are hazards that come with the adult film industry. Yet you don't see the same level of shaming that goes on with other jobs that the sex industry receives. Society's clutches reach you at an early age and teach us that these women are whores and doing it for various reasons other than a career choice. Fact of the matter is that porn acting is a job in a multi-million dollar industry. There are benefits and risks just like any other job. Those horror stories you hear about suicide, drug addiction, and depression are specific to how each starlet handles her time in the business. I'm sure a lot of us have had jobs were we trade in a little bit of our soul for a wage. In conclusion those who love porn and understand it is an entertainment industry get a product we enjoy and love. Porn is not "real" sex. The fornication is real but the fantasy is enforced. These people aren't in love and don't encourage you to commit all the acts you witness on your TV or laptop screen. It is a fantasy. Fantasizing is something WE ALL do, porn just helps!
Most probably get into to it for some combination of money, attention, and sex. Some will have some damage from their earlier lives that they are repeating or dealing with through being a sex worker. Though I suspect if porn didn't pay, very few of them would stick around.
I'll add shopping to the list of reasons. Making a scene in the morning, hungover, using the check for shopping, then go partying again. What young woman would say no to that, if it weren't for how society will say she's going to hell for it?
Nobody is asking, why do guys go into porn and become porn studs? I'm sure, everybody will say that guys go into porn because they enjoy having sex with women. But this answer implies that we have a double standard here. Because we explain the motivation of guys in a positive way and the motivation of women in a negative way, even though they are both doing the same thing. Why is it so hard to believe that many women enjoy the attention, the sex, and the popularity among porn fans that comes along with being a porn star? I can say for myself that I'm half-in-love with many female porn stars. I really like them all, and I enjoy watching their sex performances. And this is probably how a lot of other porn fans feel too about the porn ladies they like. This has to count for something among the porn ladies, because virtually everybody enjoys being popular and well-liked. This is a reward in itself in addition to the money these women get in porn. And it's good enough reason for many ladies to go into the porn business.

I've always been interested in the spectrum of involvement in porn. Some girls will do extreme gonzo, some girls won't go beyond nudie pics; and there's a long spectrum in between. I think with porn becoming more mainstream, the spectrum is shifting towards the gonzo end. A modern girl who will do only nude sites and girl-girl stuff capped off with a few glossy airbrushed b/g scenes in "couples" features :) might be the very same girl that wouldn't go beyond a playboy shoot if she were around 40 years ago. I'm saying that she would see limiting herself to frontal nudity in 2013 as more 'prudish' than she saw it in 1983.

You can find that in many areas of life, just look at people with tattoos, gays and lesbians, vegetarians, etc. All people put into groups that were considered "different" in the past, now viewed as normal or at least more accepted. If a star was in Playboy years ago, it was news. Now, not so much. I also think the digital world has a lot to do with it. Everyone everywhere can now see what was once a semi hidden world. That's opportunity for many that wasn't there in the past. Combine that with society dropping it's guard and the continued need to push boundaries, it's no surprise.
