I was with my little cousins the weekend before last, watching fishies swim in the deep blue sea at IMAX and all I kept thinking about was how fuckin' cool it would be to watch porn in 3-D. Could you even imagine interactive POV 3D porn? There would be men who NEVER left their houses. |

| murdock Member I'm not an actor, but I play one on TV 911 Posts 4/06 | The problem with the typical red/cyan 3D glasses is the obvious tint to the picture. Kinda defeats the purpose of having a nice, high resulution display, only to go and grossly discolor it. No disrespect to the producers of the products mentioned above, but I think those titles are kinda "gimmicky" and don't see those leading to a sustainable product line. (yes, there is interest in them now, but it appears to be more as a curiousity, than as good erotic material) The best implimentation I have seen was for computers, and required some special 3D glasses that interacted with the display. Basically the image was displayed in an interlaced format. Field A was for the left eye, Field B was for the right eye. The glasses were hooked to the monitor output and synced to the frame changes. When Field A was displayed, the glasses would momentarily block the right lense, and vice versa for Field B. While it did produce a bit of a flicker, the image reproduction was much better. (and in my opinion the 3D more striking) This system could be adopted for "normal" tv displays as well. The obvious downside to this is you would need special equipment... The glasses of course, and some sort of set top box that would trigger the glasses, either an add-on box, or a player with the functionality built in. (good luck getting manufacturers adding that functionality unless the big mainstream studios decide to persue it too) I've also read about technology that used glasses with polarized filters on them. The upside, was no color distortion or flicker, the downside was you had to have a very specialized display for the system to work. (Good luck getting everyone to ditch their current HD displays) Holgraphic projection is a possibility in the future, but I suspect their would be some significant problems with backwards compatability for current 2D displays. (and very difficult/expensive to produce) |

It would be tricky to do with video, you'd need separate video streams for the left and right projectors, and you would need to synchronize them to the exact frame. As you say, it will not work with existing HD screens. This looks interesting - Ad for new Philips 3D displays. Unfortunately you can't see any of the 3D effects in the ad, because you are looking at it on your 2D computer screen. I'd like to see a demo of one of these in real life. No glasses are needed. |
| UnkwnUsr2 Member 443 Posts 2/05 | Any red/cyan just makes everybody's eyes hurt and you lose all the color which is why 3D failed in the 50s and will continue failing until there are better affordable solutions out there. Just recently there have been some price drops in the area of 3D displays. For example, the iZ3D monitor which uses polarized light and polarized glasses, is now available at $399 which is quite cheap. It is originally tailored towards gamers but it will play any other TRUE stereoscopic 3D source. What this means is that releasing your DVD in red/cyan is a big no-no. What you want to do is release a DVD with both camera positions stored separately, so that any technology can produce the desired 3D effect by overlaying the 2 positions in whatever way is necessary for that particular technology. The other solutions are still quite expensive, especially if you look at the 3D TVs that don't require glasses. Have never seen those in action though but I hear they have quite the limited range of view which is understandable but applies to almost all 3D TVs including the polarized ones. The best overall solution is probably a higher-end HMD (Head-Mounted display). These provide the viewer with 2 tiny parallel OLED (organic LEDs) screens, one for each eye. However, the resolution for these will go no higher than 720p at the very very most. The cheaper ones are stuck at 480p. In either case the experience is still like sitting in a ginormous 3D cinema. And you don't get any eye strain because they both run with 60 Hz minimum with no flickering and true color, so that's why I'd say they're the best solutions right now. These are available at $1500+ (good ones). You might find more information at mtbs3d.com. Though that site also targets gamers it also concerns itself with all other areas of 3D technology and is one of the more active ones with actual reviews etc. Edited by - unkwnusr2 on 1/16/2009 9:18:31 AM |

What it really does best is separate the foreground from the middleground from the background. It's kind of like those shadow boxes where things are flat, but there's space between them. That works well for a variety of things, but porn? Not really. Another problem with it is that to do it properly, you really need to have the separation between the lenses matched to what you're focusing on. At reasonable distances (say 10 feet away) it's simple. But porn is usually stuff that's shot 6-feet, 4-feet away? Maybe a foot away for closeups. If you're shooting with a stereo camera (one that's meant to shoot two images simulatenously), the lenses are usually fixed and you can't change the separation or the convergance. If you shoot with two separate cameras, you can--but it's complicated and a lot of work. My guess is that at some point we'll have computer controlled cameras which can automatically converge and separate the lenses based on what we're focused on. But that's going to be very pricey and God knows how long it would be before it becomes cheap enough for most porn studios to justify the expense. CGI might also change things, since you could have a model and then tell the computer to render the image from two different viewpoints. I'm surprised that Pixar hasn't done this yet. Last problem is that a lot of people simply don't know what to do with 3-D anyway. It's wonderful, yet it ends up being gimmicky. A lot of good 50s movies were shot in 3-D (Hitchcock's Dial M for Murder, and I think John Wayne's Hondo, for instance), yet we only remember the crap like House of Wax and the shlock horror movies where they threw things at the screen. Same thing in porn. Not long ago I reviewed Rack-o-Rama, which is in 3-D, and it's a piece of shit. You're not seing a cock or a dildo pumping a pussy, you're seeing a girl skipping rope, or tangled in ropes that run into the foreground and threaten to tear your eyes out if you try to focus on them. |

| UnkwnUsr2 Member 443 Posts 2/05 | It uses wireless active 3D shutter glasses so you get - full color, any resolution - no viewing angle restrictions (as with polarization) - multiple viewers per screen They require a 120Hz monitor so you get 60Hz on every eye which is the same as regular monitors, no eye strain. They also work with Mitsubishi 60''+ DLP HDTV Theaters and, as I understand, you can also get them to work with any other TV that can put out more than 100Hz. 600$ for a 22 inch Samsung monitor with glasses, 200$ only glasses. | jayo All-Star Member 2117 Posts 7/04 | There was experimentation with print using a lenticular surface (i.e. ridges), but it didn't look very convincing. Then with glasses come all the normal problems. Some people don't like wearing them. Some of us already wear them, so you need something that fits over those, which is usually huge and uncomfortable. No matter what, it's a nuisance in some degree or another. I think the long term answer is holography, but that still has a way to go and hasn't been made practical on a scale where you can sell it at Best Buy for $199. |

I'm sure it'll catch on eventually, but it seems to be slow going. The leap between conventional DVD and Blu-Ray just isn't as compelling as going from VHS to DVD. |
