With the inevitable introduction of HD-DVD in the forseeable future, I was wondering whether this new, improved technology will curb your appetite for current DVDs.

I used to collect VHS and laserdiscs before DVDs. With every new format (including the recent Digital VHS), it does get a little annoying to have one's collection rendered obsolete, but that is the price we pay for better picture and sound.

If HD-DVD were available tomorrow, would you stop buying "regular DVDs" today?

And for you technophiles out there, do low-resolution porn vids from the eighties really benefit in a high definition transfer?

If I thought that everything currently on DVD would immediately become available on HD-DVD, it would probably make a difference. Since that is not going to happen, and the price of DVD's are so reasonable, I'll probably continue to buy non-HD DVD's.

I'm also sure that there are some DVD's that I currently own, or may purchase in the future, that I wouldn't upgrade to HD-DVD. I still have a bunch of Laserdiscs that I have no intention of upgrading. Hopefully, the HD-DVD format that becomes the standard wil allow for players with backward compatibility to the current DVD format. I'm really running out of space in my equipment racks (I recently had to pull a laserdisc player out of the cabinet in my bedroom in order to make room for a NTSC/PAL DVD player).

HD-DVD may be a cool idea, but...

I still have nightmares with my first home-video player. Yes, it was a Betamax. Yes, it was FAR superior to the VHS system. But those things weren´t cheap at the time, and soon it became a biatch to find titles on rental stores. It took me two years to buy a VHS.

Good link Planet. The best thing that the CE Manufacturers did with DVD was to come up with a common standard. That's why there was such an uproar about Divx. Years had been spent coming up with a standard and then Circuit City went out of their way to screw it all up.

Now, all the different manufacturers are trying to screw it up all over again.

don't count on hd-dvd becoming the norm anytime soon

hd-vhs is out...they look a hundred times better than dvd, and who the hell buys those?

HD-VHS is a step BACK. Who wants a media that deteriorates (yes, after some viewings the dropouts start to appear) and need to be rewound?

Unless & until the new format gains widespread acceptance (and discs are widely available), it's not something I'm going to worry much about. I, too, was an LD collector (and a Betamax owner), but, like Bill, there are any number of things that I don't plan to rebuy on DVD.

And as much as I'd like to have some of those classic 80's titles, I'm afraid the lack of decent masters is just going to make them look worse in the digital format. Even with LDs, this was an ongoing problem-any flaws in the source material become glaringly apparent (I have a bunch of Hong Kong films on LD that come to mind).
