Not all of them Euro cinema. I bought Romance, Brown Bunny and Nine Songs at my local Virgin (rip) Records store in Salt Lake City. |

We have come a long way baby....and I don't think that it is going to stop anytime soon. |

This topic is in perfect timing for the current film Blue Valentine which is on everyone's tongue because of its awards. It originally got an NC 17. Second, there isn't an official MPAA Ratings Board X-rating anymore. X was what they used before NC-17 started being used. They dropped it because porn stole it Third, the movie industry chose to rate their own movies instead of having the government rate them (like in other countries do). This protects the movie industry from that kind of political pressure. As much as I disagree with the ratings board, I'd rather have had them for all these years than Nixon or Bush appointees. Then again...it might be fun if we went Canadian-style and had every state choose its own ratings. Fourth, the TV Parental Guidelines are awesome. They were designed to be used with V-chips so that people could control their own TV's content. Plus, there's not as much at stake as with movie ratings. Most importantly, the networks decide themselves. Oddly, sports and news don't have to be rated (and they're often the most violent thing on TV), but that's probably because they're mostly live. The fascinating thing to me is that this means that cable and pay channels can kinda do what they want in terms of content. Pay-cable shows frequently push the sexuality boundaries nowadays. "Tell Me You Love Me" was a great HBO (?) show with plenty of explicit sex (I think the penises were dildos, though). fifth! no...stop, Sue...and breathe. |

It's a great scene. ![]() Roads To Moscow / Twitter: @roadstomoscow |

Only indie theaters show them. And back when they were relevant, Blockbuster and Hollywood wouldn't carry NC17 product. [But they carried unrated product, which allowed them to play both sides of the "scared parent" vs "film buff" divide]. And let's not forget the crown of the corporate censorship jewel: Wal-Mart refusing to carry NC17 product. And we all know that the ratings board has always judged sex more harshly than violence. THESE are the real reasons you don't see actual sex in corporate American movies. It has nothing to do with the old canard that "hinting sex is more artistic than showing sex." If your movie shows sex, you will be financially punished by eliminating your theatrical revenue. Some indie films get around this by intentionally going Unrated and financially planning for it. They know they're only going to get art-house theatres and then DVD/internet/TV revenue. They know they're not going to make 100 million dollars but they make their film for the art of it. People like sexuality. They want to see movies with it in it. Take it from a video retailer. The individual titles that are the top-renting of all-time in my stores are the sexual (and well-made) ones. [Not the pornos]. In a year, movies like The Unbearable Lightness of Being or Eyes Wide Shut rent more than some brand-new releases of the year. Simply because sex does sell (when it's done well). And now there's the pay-cable TV show factor. Writers with a good idea that may be too sexy for a 13-year-old target audience can now pitch their idea as a show for HBO, etc. That area of the market has been proliferating for sure, and much of it is sexual material (SEX and the City, Hung, Tell Me You Love Me, The L-Word, Californication, etc). | BustdownGal Member 539 Posts 7/06 | But as a sexual auteur, Jules will appreciate a world in which Aronofsky is free to film a 3D explicit sex scene with James Franco and Natalie Portman in a project with a $50 million budget. I predict that the skills of the 2 industries will meld. While Jennifer Aniston may not actually fuck Javier Bardem on screen, stunt doubles from the former porn industry could fill in. 2. The screaming christian contingent will, for a long foreseeable future, make it hard to have real sex on-screen. I can see them trying to get Chloe Sevigny arrested if she becomes an actor who frequently has real sex for money on-screen. At least with simulating sex with dildos (like the show "Tell Me You Love Me") and special effects (like those stupid Scary Movies), you can't try to arrest someone for prostitution while filming in some podunk town. 3. There are mainstream movies with explicit sex scenes in them, but most of them are not happy movies. Antichrist did not make me want to double-dip at all, despite the erect penis. (2 words: ejaculating blood.) European movies with sex tend to not be happy (Baise moi, Romance, anything with Isabelle Huppert) and the ones that are happy are usually teen comedies. |

The actors too can be easily persuaded to have simulated sex and paid much less than for explicit sex (and avoid any risk of public exposure later). |
