Every time I try to play an .mpg file, I get an error message saying "Windows Media Player encountered an unkonwn error. This can occur when another proram or OS component enocunters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the Player."

This is apparently related to hex C00D11CD, Condition ID = hex 00000000. I've googled this but none of the solutions I've found have worked. Any of you seen this before? I'm on XP Home with Windows Media Player version 10.00.00.3646

Uninstall and re-install the Windows Media Player. That should resolve the issue.

[Start] [Settings] [Control Panel] [Add or Remove Programs]
then scroll down and highlight "Windows Media Player 10"
and click on [Change/Remove]
follow screen instructions from there
----------
reboot the computer
----------
start Internet Explorer and go to the Tools menu
choose [Windows Update]
look for Windows Media Player 10
follow the installation instructions

Then go to Microsoft's website and find the install/download. See if you can force it to re-install over the existing version.

Hmm... tried that and still having the problem. Is there a central place to download new codecs? I'm wondering if that's the problem.

look for the ACE Mega Codecs Pack... of course installing it could introduce more problems. I believe there may still be a K-Lite codec pack out there that comes in three file sizes.

Tried both codec packs, still no go. :(

It's happening with all mpeg files I have. Wmv files play fine, but there's no sound. Happens with Divx player 2.6 too. Weird.

Sound card is working. It's on-board so the quality isn't great, but it's been working fine with gaming and music.

If one wants to check the codecs installed to play any moviefile try this little program
GSpot Codec Information Appliance

Again it only tells you about a codec needed for playing your file, but does not install any codec at all!!!

Update: I tried some of the suggestions that Gspot made but was still luckless in getting the .mpegs to play on Windows Media Player. But what I did was install this Nero OEM suite that I got with my DVD burner and the mpegs are playing fine with the Nero Showtime player. I'm getting sound and picture, no more crashing.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone who kindly made suggestions. You pointed me in the right direction and I probably wouldn't have found a solution to this so soon without your input.
