A while ago I was having problems with my Windows finding mysterious new hardware when there wasn't any.
I thought I had the problem solved when I disabled automatic updated and fussed with USB drivers (rolling them back 1 version fixed it).
It is happening again. Whenever I start my machine it says that it has "found new hardware" and wants me to help it locate the drivers. I don't get it. There is no new hardware.
Does anyone know if I can get windows to tell me what sort of hardware it is detecting? Maybe something I have needs new drivers?

There doesn't seem to be a consensus on what causes this problem. Some people suggest that the BIOS is changing IRQ assignments, causing Windows to think the hardware is new. That might be worth checking into.

Thanks Hardware.
Unfortunately that might be a bit advanced for me. I could look at the IRQ assignments but past that I wouldn't know how to diagnose where the problem is happening. That sort of tweaking is something I haven't done. If it helps I have the most recent BIOS for my board, I think it came out in november of last year.
Any tips?
It doesn't seem to be a huge issue but it definitely slows down my computer when it is starting up.

I don't have any personal experience diagnosing your problem, conquistador, sorry. You might go see what Microsoft has to say about it on their website.

I just checked them out. Microsoft forums are very confusing. And very highly populated.
Fuck Microsoft is torturing me.
I tried to post a question in the forums. It told me I needed to register. I filled out the form only to find out that at some point I had registered and had no clue what my password was.
I clicked on the "email password reset question". That took me to a help section which explained the how the password reset process works (I have done this type of thing before, you know) but did not have a link to actually have said email sent to me.
I clicked back and it resized my window to a column and reloaded the same page.
If it is only being a dick to me because I am using firefox I will be even more pissed off.
I have given up for now.

It is doing it every time you boot, correct?
Just out of curiosity, do you let it complete whatever it is that it wants to do? or do you cancel out of it?

Every time.
There is no hope for completion, I have tried clicking my way through thew options.
XP tells me I have a new unknown piece of hardware. and wants me me to help locate drivers. I can't help because I don't know what hardware it is detecting.
It asked me if it is allowed to look online for drivers, it tried and doesn't find anything. Then it says that there was a problem with my new hardware installation, it failed to install.

All my current hardware appears to be working just fine.
I am almost positive the problem is related to some facet of some windows update. I just have no idea what.

And if I click on the dialog about the failure it just opens the same damn wizard again. Logic loop.

Ok
Why?

I just noticed that you said you flashed the bios some time ago. It didn't start right after this, did it?
Actually, can you think of anything that you may have changed just before it started happening?

conquistador:
Just tried the "Send you and email" icon, and it says you've disabled emailing from the forum.
Click mine, if you don't mind, and send me an email that I can reply to.

I don't think you clicked "update" when you checked the option to allow emails, conquistador.
Try his email now, willywilly. It should work.

About BIOS, I think the last time I flashed them was January. This problem started more recently.
My ability to get to the advanced properties for my sound (things like adding a subwoofer or side channels or whatever) hasn't been working lately either. It is Realtek AC97. Even when I update it's drivers I still can't open all the menus. I can click them but nothing happens.
I haven't really been considering it a problem as my gaming and movie watching continue.

I just sent you a test email through the forum link.
BTW, is your Realtek a card or is it built into the motherboard?

No dice with the mail.
What I suspect is going on is: I was inactive here for a long time and I started a new account with the sole point of emailing steph to the access to this account again.
The other one was conquistad0r but I assumed steph would have purged it. But it also probably used the email address I am trying to have mail sent to now.
I have to go back to work now. If you have any ideas please let me know.

I tried my own, and it wouldn't allow emailing me either!
Something changed somehow... probably as Drew worked on things, as I know mine used to work fine.
When I went to check on it, it was checked on!
Just for the hell of it, I clicked on Update, and then went and tried again. This time, it opened a window to allow email to me.

I think you are on it. Even though the check mark makes it look like it is already on, Update needs to be clicked.
Just did. It seemed to. Tnx.
Conq: Already replied to the email you sent me.
The second email - from using the feature here in the forum - that I just now sent, is just a test to be sure it worked from the forum now.

Hardware: Just a thought.... could he have a corrupted driver?
This could be a pain in the ass, but would it be worth it for him to assemble all his driver disks, then proceed to remove drivers from his computer - one at a time - and reinstall them? Rebooting between each removal/reinstall.

My best guess at this point is a bad solder joint - the unit is there when the computer boots up so Windows discovers it. Then the solder expands and the unit disappears, so Windows disables it. Repeat, lather and rinse.
Given the problem conquistador is having with his Realtek I suspect that's where the problem lies.
@conquistador - your email address is not the same one that's associated with the conquistad0r account.

Is there any visual way for me to identify a faulty solder joint? Or do I have to get out the multimeter?
More when I am off work.
Thanks for all the interest in helping me fix this strange problem.

I wouldn't count on a visual inspection finding it, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth taking a look.

willywilly: Thank you for the mail and the forum link. That thread hasn't generated much interest so far so I may chime in.
Hardware: Could dust/dirt be a factor here? It has been several months since I cleaned my computer (I have been being lazy waiting to buy a new P4 heatsink/fan assembly). It has 6 80mm case fans shooting air through it, and through the side window things look a bit on the dusty side.
I was just fussing around with the sound outs, it is supposed to have "jack sensing" features where you'll plug something in and it will trigger a menu to set it up (there are 4 audio outs). I just tried plugging in a small pair of powered speakers and my machine didn't notice. I could still get sound through them, just not tweak any options.
I have a fresh can of compressed air ready to do some dusting but it will probably be at least a week before I mess around with cleaning. I'll be having company for the next week and I have a ton of stuff to do to make my apartment fit for human habitation.
So for now I just want to try fixes that won't involve any screwdrivers.
I am going out to get some beer right now and when I get back I'll re-download all the drivers I might need and uninstall and reinstall my platform (nforce4, etc) drivers and see what happens.
When I right clock on my "audio accessories" to try to get to the Realtek sound manager the option highlights but doesn't do any thing and there seems to be no changes in the task manager either.

I'll be surprised if blowing out the dust fixes your problem, but it will still be good for your computer to get the dust out.
The fact that your computer failed to 'notice' the new speakers is further indication that the sound adapter isn't communicating with Windows properly. Your Realtek manager may be failing to load for the same reason - it is unable to establish communications with the hardware.

Isn't that something? ... the exact same problem mentioned by somebody else?
I hope something pans out for you. There or here.
Let us know what it was, when you do get it figured out.
You ran out of beer?
You actually ran out of beer???
Well hell.... That's the problem! Anybody knows that!

CQ. Do you have an extra hard drive laying around somewhere? You could swap out the hard drive and do a fresh install of XP just to see if maybe something got screwed up in the software. If it's been a long time since you did a reformat and reinstall, that could be it.

RP: I am a huge fan of the troubleshooting process of elimination but that is simply too invasive for me. My machine has 4 hard drives and 3 dvd drives and there isn't any room to work on the front end anymore.

And:
Last time I switched the hard drive that windows was booting from (same MoBo different drive) I ended up on the phone with India for 20 minutes trying to explain that I had upgraded my computer and that nobody had pirated my xp.

Hmmm. What kind of disc is your copy of XP on? Did it come with the computer or did you buy it outright? I've never had a problem reinstalling XP or Vista onto a separate hard drive as long as it was the same MB. Which hard drive you use shouldn't make a difference.
However, I've only ever used OEM versions of Windows that came with the computer so I guess that could be an issue. What happens if you have to reinstall XP onto the same hard drive? Have you done that before?

That is the tricky part. It came with a Dell I got when I first went to university. I am probably breaking some license requirement by using what I paid for because whenever I fuss with my OS I have to type in huge alpha numeric strings dictated by subcontinental Indian women to get the shit to work.
Apparently my old Dell never thought I might upgrade. The only thing from my Dell that is in my current zombie is an 80 GB disk. Which is filled with all sorts of neat relics, as are all my disks. I can't reformat anything right now.

And at this point it is clear that the OS itself is not at fault and that there is some hardware thing going on.
It is not stopping me from watching "Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi" so it isn't a gigantic issue. It is just an odd and ongoing problem that I want some insight into.

As far as that goes, that's probably why you have problems trying to do a reformat. That's why I couldn't use my old XP disc that came with my old Emachines on my new Emachines when I decided that I didn't like Vista. I could've probably called them and gotten it to work but it just wasn't worth it. It sucks but that's the way it is. They don't want you using an OEM copy of Windows for multiple computers.
You should probably just buy a copy eventually so you don't have so much BS to do when you have to reformat. With Windows, it's bound to happen eventually. Every time you boot and don't get bluescreens from hell is living on borrowed time.
It DOES sound like a hardware issue but I just suggested it because I've had things that seemed like hardware issues before and it turned out to be a problem with Windows. I don't know. all that updating and installing and uninstalling and just the nature of Windows can sometimes screw things up.
Another thing you could try, since you think it might be the onboard sound. You could go into your BIOS and turn off the onboard sound (If your BIOS has that option) and see if it still finds new hardware when you reboot. Then, if that seems to be the problem, you could buy a cheap add on sound card. Even the cheapest ones are at least as good as onboard, if not better. You'll probably lose your front audio jacks (if you even use them). Probably around $25 (US). Not free but at least it's relatively simple and it's relatively cheap.
I got a cheap $20 Creative Soundblaster for my old computer and it was much better than the onboard audio, anyway.

Holy crap.
RP: thank you.
I think you probably just hit on the most effortless solution right there.
Here I was thinking of using a multimeter and mapping circuits. I am not very demanding from a sound card. Right and left is enough for me.
This is the idea which presents least hassle, by far.

It's only a solution if it works. Sounds likely but I guess you never know.
If you do get a card, I wouldn't install the bundled software unless you really want it and don't have the same capabilities already with other software you already have installed. Just the driver should be fine. When I first got the Creative card, I went ahead and let it do the full installation and it installed a bunch of stuff I didn't need.

Even if I don't enable the card. I just want something to appease XP's need to install mysterious new hardware. Maybe it will make XP happy.
Oh and by the way RP:
Check out Portal. coolest game I have seen in ages. Totally new idea for a first person game. No enemies, just spacial relationship puzzles. You can get it from Valve's website for 20 bucks and it is well worth it.

Just be careful tinkering in the BIOS. You seem like you know what you're doing but just warning in case you're not too familiar with it. Some of the stuff in there is pretty cryptic so if you don't know what it is, don't change it. The setting to turn off onboard audio should be very obvious. I've accidentally changed random settings in the BIOS before just from "fat fingers" and didn't even realize I did it. Not knowing what the setting was supposed to be, it took me forever and a day to get it right again.

No worries.
I am good with almost all bios settings. I never mess with voltages or over clocking at the hardware level.
I even made sure my BIOS knows about all my fans.
