I just read every thread in the Porn Pool on Jenna Jameson, Jesse Jane, and those that had “modern” and “new face” and “poster” (as in poster girl) in the title. Like her, loathe her, or feel indifferent when Jenna Jameson was around there was some consensus (actually quite a bit) that this person represented the face of porn.
Regarding Jesse Jane, CNBC recently (as in 2011) stated that she is "for many, the face of modern porn.” Personally, I think Jesse Jane severely limited her exposure by signing with Digital Playground. Nonetheless, I think you could argue convincingly that she took the torch from Jenna or that it was passed to her.
This is not the stuff of Polls – but rather the stuff of discussion. With all the niches we have today is there one person we can point to and say she is it? Is this even possible in the Internet age?
What are the advantages to being able to single out one person? What are the disadvantages?

I think people like having icons - and love to love - and love to hate the one the not-so-silent majority (media, critics, and fans) says is best, even if that one isn’t their favorite.
What do you think?

I think that to the "casual" porn viewer Jesse Jane has the archetypal porn star look. But I think its interesting how in recent years the biggest porn star is arguably Jenna Haze, a non-busty brunette.

Jesse Jane is not the face of porn, anyone will tell you that Jenna Haze is the most popular performer in porn. I didn't even know who Jesse was 2 years ago. In that article you listed they also say that Jenna Haze is arguable the most popular adult star in porn today, so I don't see how Jesse can be the face. Jenna Haze is also the most loved adult star in the history porn, I never heard anyone say a bad thing about her, and don't even get me started on the shit load of awards she have won over the years! I think she's the only performer to win both Best New Starlet and FPOTY, and she's also the first triple crown winner in porn. So yeah Jenna Haze is totally #1.

To be honest, I don't think either of them are. As far as the mainstream public is concerned I think that Jenna Jameson is still the "face of porn". I think if you polled most people who honestly don't watch or follow adult movies, the only names that would really come up are Jenna Jameson and Ron Jeremy. And I think the only company name that would come up is Vivid.

^ I agree that Jenna Jameson is still the face of porn as far as the mainstream public is concerned. I notice Jenna Haze's name keeps coming up whenever the subject of "most popular" or "most well known" or "crossover" comes up. I've never been able to figure out why people keep mentioning her. I'm not saying she isn't a good pornstar or isn't respected or popular withn the porn world but I don't understand why people think Jenna H. is well known outside the world of porn. When mainstream articles on porn are written I don't see Jenna H.'s name mentioned. I don't see her outside of hardcore porn anywhere. When a cable channel does a show or report on porn if she mentioned it's only briefly in passing. Maybe I'm missing something but but I don't think Jenna is as well known to the masses as some of you may think.
But I may be wrong. Explain why you think Jenna Haze is the new face of porn.

Amongst my friends who watch porn they would probably say Jenna Haze or Belladonna. However, my non-porn watching friends would probably say Jesse Jane - if they knew any girl at all. Everyone knows Ron Jeremy, though.

I think Jenna is still the face of modern porn even though she's long-retired because being the 'face of porn' isn't necessarily about updating your website more than anyone else, being the best at a certain sexual act or having the cleanest past. Sometimes it's about having a legacy to stand on and having a fan base to back you up.
Jenna may not be the best performer but she was in the industry for longer than most people, got out of it sane (more than can be said for a lot of adult stars) and successful enough to basically do nothing the rest of her life at like 35 (more than can be said for most porn stars who retire and still have to work for the rest of their lives). What makes her comfortable as the face of porn for most people is also that her porn career is tame comparatively. She never did anal on screen, never did gonzo type stuff. She basically made her uber career on vanilla sex which the mainstream is more comfortable promoting than girls who make their career doing double/triple anal, fetish stuff, etc which is almost unavoidable nowadays.
If I had to look beyond her, I would vote for Jesse Jane. She seems to do a ton of non-porn stuff and really get herself out there to the mainstream world. I've heard of Jenna Haze but I've never seen her outside of porn. You get stories fairly routinely of Jesse on TMZ, randomly on various non-porn TV stations, etc.

If it were up to me to choose a new face of porn or a representive for porn I'd choose Bobbi Starr. As I mentioned in another thread, Bobbi has worked in almost all genres of porn and is a great performer who excels in any type of porn she does from the kinky stuff to the hardcore Gonzo to vanilla type porn the big studio stuff to the small studio movies. She has fan appeal that ranges across the board from fans of harcore, vanilla, feature, big butt, IR, anal, gangbangs, kink, girl/girl, tease, etc...and she directs movies. She pretty, smart, hard working, depenable and I've never heard any embarrassing stories about her and most importantly she totally digs her profession. She could do a great job as the modern torchbearer of porn.

I like your suggestion of Bobbi and I'd like to add Dana Dearmond since she has done about the same amount of movies and scene as Bobbi. The only thing that differentiates them is that Bobbi has more titles as director than Dana and Dana started about a year before Bobbi. of course these women are the face of porn for porn viewers and not mainstream media.
The only performer of this generation who I think might be known to the mainstream media is James Deen and if he isn't then there is a good chance that he will be. At least if he gets to play opposite Lindsay Lohan.

Interesting question.
If you mean to say that Jenna Jameson was the face of Porn in the sense that Merilyn Monroe was the mainstream sexual icon of her time. Then I think Jenna Jameson may still be the Icon of porn for the masses.
No one has eclipsed her yet in terms of penetrating the minds of the North American mainstream.
Porn like so much of our entertainment is splintered into endless genres and competes with more choice of content than ever before.
IMHO there are several smaller icons that exist. More representative of their fanbase, more iconic to their fanbase however with small reach and influence than the Jenna Jameson"brand" would have today.
I would make a case for Belladonna as one the biggest current Icons of Porn. She crosses over into so many genres:
Big/Mainstream Studios (Vivid)
Early Queen of HardCore/Gonzo (Helped launch JulesJordan empire)
Is certainly on of the lesbian porn Icons
Her Evail Angel lable has put her at the forefront of all kinds of fetish porn and alt porn.
She has crossed into the realm of mainstream via the ABC Primetime new indictment of pornography. She has been featured in several porn documentary.
Sasha Grey has a lot of mainstream awareness thanks to her porn career, a season on HBO's Entourage & Steven Soderbergh major motion picture "The Girlfriend Experience"
Jena Haze is also well known for her long and consistent career she just has little mainstream crossover.
Jesse Jane maybe the biggest star that is marketed to the mainstream porn watcher I just find it hard to see her as the new face of porn because she seems to represent such a thin slice of the industry to me.

I don't think there really is one. The dynamics of porn has simply changed too much for any one girl to truly standout in the mainstream public. The internet has simply changed-the-game IMO. I think there is way more porn produced online these days, plus a bad economy has diminished porno film productions for years. Most of the contract girl contracts are gone, so there really isn't much direct marketing anymore from what I see. Jesse Jane probably wins it now, but more by default than anything.

^ agreed.
Every guy who can spend $2000 on a video camera and get a girl naked has his own 'studio' and every girl who can drop $20 on a webcam is a 'pornstar' now, except the 'star' portion of that is basically gone and that's what you notice. Now everyone is more a porn performer than a porn *star*. Even the most unattractive internet girls (cam/website) have hundreds of diehard fans because there's a fetish for everything and I'm not saying that's bad but....it makes it harder for any sort of singular definition of quality. Whereas you had to be at least vaguely attractive and talented to get hired at one of the few studios that existed back then as a contract girl or to get into magazines.
I think it's now become almost impossible to be an internet star and then move that to offline stardom, and all the companies have basically set themselves up as 98% online, 2% offline (DVDs). The internet is just too much of a beast and there are just too many other performers on it and even the talented or good ones fade into the mesh of millions of other naked online girls and millions of porn websites. Sure they all have their pool of fans but I think it was different and easier to become a 'star' pre-internet when box covers meant something and being a contract girl was basically becoming a made woman. Now...who really cares who's a contract girl? And box covers? Nobody rents porn anymore to even see a cover. If people buy porn nowadays it's generally invisible digital files (no cover).
Anyway. Just my .02. It seems like you either like Jenna and think she's earned her fame/money/title or you think she's absolute rubbish and there's not much middle ground.

If you were to go by stats Dana is right there Bobbi with most things. I give it to Bobbi becaue she directs on a steady basis and for me that's an important part of why I think she'd a great porn represenative or "Face of porn".
Actually, if it were up to me I'd prefer the "face of porn" be one person for both porn fans and mainstream people. That's why I picked a person who I think could handle being both.
The thing I didn't like about girls like Jenna, Tera and Jesse being the the porn girls who get the most mainstream media coverage or being most well known is that they only cover a small part of the porn spectrum. Whenever they're being interviewed they almost seem down on some of the aspects of the porn biz. When people ask Jenna, Tera or Jesse about how many guys they've been with I think all of them are quick to point out that they only work with a few select guys like it's a badge of honor. That doesn't impress anyone in the porn community and it doesn't impress porn fans and I'm sure most of the mainstream audience couldn't care less. They also get questions like what if they do gangbangs, anal, and the more kinkier/arder stuff and again they answer no like it's a horrible thing they would never stoop to. My feeling is I'd like to hear from a real pornstar who embraces the profession and is able to talk honestly and frankly about all aspects of the different types of porn. I've been watching a few news shows/documentaries about porn lately and someone with experience needs to set the record straight on many of the things being said out there. I know there are some bad things that may go on in porn but it seems many of those shows just exaggerate and make some of that stuff up for the sake of sensationalism and no really disputes or calls them out on it. When talk like that comes up I don't think Jesse Jane is the person to go to for discussion (even though I'm a Jesse fan).
If you had someone like Bobbi she could cover the whole spectrum because she's done most of it. Plus she directs her own films and that's good for the people who look at from the angle of how much power do girls in the business have and from the persective of a busnesswoman. She could talk about the treatment of women by men and how she treats them in comparison and such.
And from a porn fan point of view wouldn't it be nice for the "face of porn" to actually be a great pornstar?
That's why if I could pick a "face of Porn" I'd go with Bobbi Starr.

^ I agree 100%, adult stars like Jenna, Tera, and Jesse do not represent the industry as a whole. I don't know why the media loves to pick the most boring air-headed adult star to be porn's Representative. I was so happy when Sasha Grey was getting a lot of media attention, I was like finally a smart girl.
I would go with Jenna Haze or Sasha Grey, because they both done everything their is to do in porn, and they have a better view on porn as a whole.

^ I don't agree with that though.
Why do girls in porn always have to do absolutely everything and if they don't then they're prudes / anti porn / not really porn performers / should hurry up and just do it because that's the ONLY way on God's green Earth to be a REAL 'star'? Who cares if a few fans want it? There are people out there that want to see guys shoving five fists up a girls anus, that doesn't mean it's going to happen, should happen or that that should suddenly be the mainstream sex act for the next decade or that the girls who do it are better than the girls who don't. Doing a sex act does not make you better or even a better performer than someone who does different sex acts.
There's nothing wrong with having boundaries in porn. Everyone says porn should be fun for the girls and that the girls having a natural enjoyment of the sexual act translates to a better video. I agree. And forcing girls to do everything or else they'll have no career and no chance is ridiculous and is what leads to pornstars having to use various drugs and alcohol to get through shoots. This may be shocking to men but no matter how much lube you use, it's still painful to take a fist, two penises or a 6 inch thick dildo up your backside and keep it there for an hour or more for a film.
So this idea that Belladonna or Haze or Grey are better than Jenna just because they've done more of those acts is ridiculous and actually hinders the porn industry. There are lots of girls who would love to do porn. Beautiful, gorgeous, sexy girls who would make amazing films but they stay away because they know it's basically double anal, airtight and drinking cups of semen or nothing.
Jenna's not down on porn. She makes no bones about her past, unlike most stars who get out and immediately admit how horrendous, awful and depressing it was. Jenna [J]'s segments are always very positive. They invite her there when they want to explore pornography. For instance she did a great Oprah episode that was very positive and there wasn't any bashing at all. And a hilarious positive Wanda Sykes ep that was again, porn positive. She also won an anti-porn debate at Oxford. People ask because people are curious and she answers honestly, nothing more. Compare those to Sasha Grey's appearance on Tyra where she basically looked in tears, was completely ashamed, admitted she did it purely for money and it was completely dismal and anti-porn. Or compare it to Belladonna on ABC I believe it was where it was all about how depressed she was because of the business. She back-tracked after the interview but even her own sister basically said that the interview was truthful and that she was depressed and didn't necessarily enjoy the business, just the paycheque. She probably tried to take it back because she knew it would affect her business. No one in the industry would work with her badmouthing the industry like that.

Personally, I don't care that Jenna didn't do "everything" looking at her career from a pornstar standpoint. Jenna gave her audience what they wanted and I'm not part of that audience and I'm more than okay with that. However, in this particular discussion I'm talking about who I think should be the "face of porn" and I feel the "face of porn" should be able to represent most genres and kinds of porn. If you do a sit down with Jenna and Bobbi to talk about the world of porn unless the whole conversation revolves around being a contract girl for VIVID Bobbi would blow jenna out of the water in her knowledge and personal experiences of the business. If you sat down with Jenna to talk about the wide spectrum of porn you're mostly going to hear her say "I never did that..", "I never worked him them...", "I never worked with him...", "I would never do that...". Which is fine for Jenna and her fans but not the type of pornstar who should be representing the world of porn.
And no, being a pornstar who does everything doesn't make her a better performer but I think it does make you a better pornstar. Porn covers a wide range of sexual acts, kinks and fantasies. A true pornSTAR should be able to and willing to as many as possible and that's what separates her from the rest of the pack and makes her a "star" instead of a mere performer.

^You could add that Bobbi has managed to remain all natural while Jenna started to alter her looks early in her career so that she didn't really look the same in her last movies than she did in in early ones.

I don't think Jesse Jane is too far of the truth as far as who is the face of modern porn. Jenna Jameson was in a lot of big budget porn movies back in the '90s for Wicked and I think Jesse Jane is probably quite similar. She did Pirates which was a fairly groundbreaking release in terms of budget and mainstream appeal. I think if you mentioned her name more people would know who she was than other names being mentioned. Although I'm murmuring over Sasha Grey but anyway...
Whether people like her not, in this era I think she probably does represent porn. But there are others that could be argued do as well. Stormy perhaps?

Jenna was hot (and probably still is), but I'm not sure why she ever was the face of porn back in the day. She was just one of a hand-full of porn stars back then that could have filled a small stadium with their dancing/strip tours. Christy Canyon was equally as popular, but times were much different then.
