There was an interesting program on TV last night about the changing attitudes of British women to porn , the main focus being Anna Span a director of the female persuasion . She was an ardent feminist dead set against porn before her Damascene moment when she decided to fill the gap in the market by making 'woman friendly porn' . A degree (I think) at a well known and reputable film school followed by a censored graduation film featuring masturbation and pissing - with her shocked parents in the audience ! - led to her career in hardcore . She's apparently shot 100+ flicks now , and plans to eventually appear in front of the camera . The main emphasis of the program was on just how different her stuff was from the run-of-the-mill male directed grot .

Anyway , to the question . I've never seen one of her vids or one from any other woman director as far as I can remember , so is there really any difference between what they show and what the men produce ? Is Mason really radically different than , say , John Stagliano's Fashionistas or Brandon Iron's slap fests ? Does anyone who's seen one of Anna's videos think she's really making anything different than is already out there ? I'm not even asking about all the performers turned 'director' - some of them probably do direct their stuff , but I can't be arsed to figure out who - more about women who are 'known' to do their thing . Is the attention called to their gender in advertising the movie just a gimmick , or do they genuinely bring something new to the table ?

Both genders have good and bad directors. Some innovate while others stagnate. In a field dominated by men, I find it interesting to get perspective from a female point of view.

I have enjoyed work by Belladonna and Mason. They got game... don't know if that counts as "new" though.

Peace out...

I read that it happens that a female gets credit for directing a certain movie to make it more interesting while it's a male behind it like with the case of Ashleu Blue at JM, movies which are not directed by her but by Jim Powers and of course Judy Blue being actually Paul Thomas.

That's what I'm asking about , what exactly does a woman director do differently which allows you to see something from her perspective ? Please understand I'm not trying to slam the fairer sex here , I'm interested in what differences people notice in their work .

I've never seen anything of Anna Spain but I saw a lot from others female directors,Here in Europe Rita Cardinale and Anita Rinaldi (both are from East Europe)are directing since years and both make films with a story not simple gonzo shots.
About american porn i like Aurora Snow as a director and Francesca Lè , I also like Jewels de Nyle's works , Tristan Taormino's and Ireland's works, I've not yet seen any of Belladonna.

There are several reasons why i like so much women as directors first of all I'm sure no one is forcing them and nobody ask them to do something they won't do expecially considering that most of them are also producers or coproducers , so I'm sure nobody hurts them. They also may choose their partners.

Another thing which is very interesting and exciting for me is that the actress is directing while fucking probably when her face is not in screen (it's a fantasy anyway)and choose what to do and when , i would like to see some extras when those girls say to performers what they have to do to them and how i find all this very exciting

I don't really care if the producer is female or male. I didn't know Mason was female until after watching a few of her films. They were strokable. I didn't care for Jewels films, but then again, I wasn't into Jewel as a performer. Call me crazy. I just didn't like her body type.

In the words of the great Dave Attell, he comments about the requirements of a porn director "and.......suck it." Women are just as capable of delivering a great porn film as any guy. I'm sure there's some novelty factor to have a "performer" direct a movie. But if the movie sucks, the fan/buyer will just avoid it anyways.

I'm sure there will be people who comment after me saying "that Kylie can sure shoot a great gaping ass...." or "that new movie by Lauren Phoenix is genius...." or "Jewel's movies are the only ones I can jerk off to...." Maybe there is something extra brought by having a female lens some hardcore fucking and sucking, or that a female director can have as dirty thoughts as any guy.

Originally it was a novelty, but the fact that these gals have proven that their product sells, hence, people like it, has reduced the novelty idea.

I'm not sure what my point was. Oh yeah, it's that it doesn't matter.

I have only seen "Riot Sluts". It goes much more in the direction of vignette-style than yawn-causing conveyor belt gonzo. It is more like kind of a short-story compilation, and not the usual fishnet-gets-fucked-on couch fuckfeast.
I am sure there are male directors who also follow this path, but I am no gonzo expert.

What is interesting many of the well known female directors go a little bit to the "dark side", Susi Medusa Gottardi (several Private/Pirate), Ovidie, Mason and maybe Nicky Ranieri (wife of salieri?) fall also in this my category.

Helen Duval's movies seem also to be a little bit harder (I remember some movie in an industrial site wich was kind of an industrial rave but instead of dancing they fucked), but I am not sure if she actually directs or gives only her name.
Tanya Hyde's (she is actually a woman AFAIK) work is also more fetish orientated.

I don't know the actual ratio of female:male of (more or well known) directors in the porn biz, but the soft fetish/soft BDSM thing seems to attract female directors.

Interesting too, that the top BDSM-novels ("9 1/2 weeks", "Story of O", "The Ties that bind") were also written by women, while a man is responsible for the amateurish Gor series.

But what do I know.

I’ve seen Stormy’s directing debut ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS, nothing groundbreaking but quite entertaining if you like the Wickedstyle.
Since you asked for the “female perspective”: Evan Stone and Lee Stone play strippers. Since in your usual pornflick they would dance just for a few seconds before going down to business I think it’s the “special female contribution” to ONE NIGHT IN VEGAS that both guys have to show their trained bodies for a much longer time.
Quite annoying if you ask me. Wicked should release a “male re-cut” of the film.

Throughout the history of adult films, males have used female pseudonyms when making some projects. Has this been to try and lure in female viewership in a mostly male dominated market? Is there a belief that if a female is helming the project it is going to be softer and therefore more acceptable for women to watch? Or was it done to seperate work that was very different than what the director normally did?

For example, Shaun Costello made some films using the name Amanda Barton. Was this to try and bring in female viewers or was this just because the content is very different than the films that he made under his name and the name Russ Carlson for Avon and he wanted a seperation between the two styles? Jack Williams used the name Joanna Williams for some of his films, yet none of them seem to be more oriented to the female market. Paul Thomas uses the name Judy Blue for some of his work, as previously acknowledged in this thread. Paul Thomas's work is already geared towards the couples market so it isn't to seperate a lighter style work. Is this to lure in female viewers? Possibly.

The inverse has also been true throughout the history of adult films. Female directors have taken on male names. Roberta Findlay, when working with David Darby, used the name Robert Norman. Talented photographer and director Suze Randall appears to have used the name Victor Nye when directing some films. If using female directorial names is used as a gimmick to bring in female viewers, then why did some female directors take on male names for some films. Was it due to fear that they wouldn't be taken seriously in a typically male dominated market?

There are talented female directors today, like Mason and Belladonna, who's work is definitely not on the lighter side. This obviously isn't to lure in female viewers under the guise that the work is more geared to them than the male viewing audience. Yet other talented female directors of today, like Candida Royale, make more couples oriented work. Marie Madison has made work as hard as any male director and as soft as any male director.

To get to answering the question, any good director is going to bring a bit of themself into a project and create their own style, male or female. Is using female directors a gimmick? I don't think so. A woman can direct an adult film as well as any male and bring in their own style, therefore bringing something more to the table.

I'm not sure if this post answers more questions than it raises but at least it gives more points to ponder.

Mason is a brilliant director...and is a woman as is Belladonna. As for Anna Span, i think that TV programme bigged her up just because the programme was about her. As all porn documentaries do about whover they've been able to get on the show. I've seen her Uniform Behavior and didn't think much of it.

I'm pretty sure Tanya Hyde is fetish photographer Trevor Watson who's photos are included on Hotel Hyde.

I also remember reading that Lizzie Borden didn't direct any movie, it was actually Rob Black but he gave her the credit for the gimmick.

Perhaps Frank Thring is not Tanya Hyde but I'm pretty sure Tanya is a guy.

Lizzy did indeed 'direct' her movies. Throughout the whole time I was at Extreme, Rob never touched the camera once for video or DVD except perhaps for wrestling-related events. Lizzy was the one behind the monitor barking instructions or orders to the performers.

In that case Lizzie learned a lot from her husband. Respect.

Alright but no way Christopher Alexander can convince me he didn't direct the movies that were directed by Buffy Malibu.

Does she really direct those flicks or is it Salieri by proxy ? If she does than I've seen a few , and they're a little looser than Mario's in terms of camera movement but otherwise seemed pretty similar .

Have any of the women mentioned here been able to add anything to their movies that male directors generally don't ? It's often stated that porn is made for men , but if that's true it's not made for men by men - at least not exclusively . Damn , that thought's squirming at the back of my mind half formed and refusing to come out . Maybe later .

I don't know who Tanya Hyde is. But I'm 100% certain that Tanya is a guy. This comes to me directly from an inpeccable source.

The only reason that I don't know who "she" is, is that at the time that I was told that she wasn't a she, I just assumed that "she" was some guy who worked under an alias. It didn't occur to me that it could be someone who also directs under another name, so I didn't ask who "she" was.

Does this mean some directors think their movies will sell better if they use the name of a female like an alter-ego? This is the reason why I always considered Mason a gimmick of Patrick Collins, like this mystery woman hiding her face directing hardcore movies.

I chose the name Mason because it was sexually ambiguous. Even more so, it had a male connotation to it. There are still many people who think Mason is a dude. I never wanted to be known as a female director, and I sure as hell don't now. If I had wanted to exploit my gender, I would have chosen to use a more female sounding name, and I would have promoted myself in a more sexualized manner. This did not interest me in the least, as it seemed like the most obvious way to get attention (those damn naked pics of female "directors" holding cameras in their press shots, drive me fucking crazy). I wanted no part of it.

Patrick Collins did indeed have a clear vision of what he wanted from me as a director. He wanted a chick who would get involved with the talent (jerk cocks, suck cocks, grab tits, etc.) from behind the camera. This was something I was simply not comfortable doing. In the end, Patrick gave me the freedom to shoot and promote myself as I wanted.

Your skepticism is duly placed, Ramsey, there are many female directors who are nothing but gimmicks. I'm simply not one of them.

I guess if I watch something made by a woman I'd like to think that she has my pleasure in mind -- I'd like to think that of a male director too. Sharing a gender in common with the director has yet to prove itself a foolproof method of finding watchable porn for me.

Wow, it's hard to believe that Veronica Hart is almost completely ignored here... even if she only does features. She has been around for a while, and has some... interesting movies out (like the porno musical). From what I've seen of couples fair, compared to her stuff, she isn't the hardest of the hard, but she doesn't hold back.

Can anyone think of a mainstream film in which you felt the gender of the director was an important factor in the way the film was made or the way you enjoyed the story? I can't.

I can think of a few films in which I felt the race of the director was crucial.

I'm sorry if I somehow implied that women don't like harder edged porn, that would have been due to poor wording on my part. I was more referencing the misnomer that women only like soft feature porn. I'd like to think that male and female directors have the pleasure of women and men in mind while making their films, however that isn't always the case. There are male directors that don't even seem to have the pleasure of a male audience in mind when making a product. Directors that I consider to be good seem to make what they enjoy and find pleasurable. And it comes through in their work. Mason, for instance, I haven't liked the films that she has made, however, it appears clear that she enjoys what she is making and it shows in her work. I don't like it since it isn't for me, but I can still tell that she is talented and likes her work. The same goes with Tony Comstock, John Stagliano, Robert McCallum (Gary Graver), Red Ezra, Henri Pachard, J.B. Evans (Pixie's Emporium) and a host of others I haven't listed here. There are others that just churn out a product that don't seem to care if any viewing audience is into it, male or female.

No, a good director is a good director regardless of sex or race for that matter. Adult films are slightly different though as they are meant to stimulate the mind differently than mainstream films. A good director is still a good director, regardless of sex in adult films however each good director will bring something different to their films.

On a mainstream film I'd guess that even large decisions can have only negligible responses bearing in mind the shear scale of production . Porn is almost like a home movie where every call has an immediate and obvious reaction . Because of that I'd suggest that it's far easier for the viewer to see the nuances of any particular director . That doesn't mean that there are any nuances to see , just that your analogy is a little out of whack . (Whacking , whacking off . See how I've seamlessly blended form and thought once more ? Sometimes I impress even myself ! )

So this is boredom , huh ?

A case of mainstream directorial gender at play ? Could play with the idea of Point Break directed by Katherine Bigelow , and 'assisted' by James Cameron . It's a film with a far greater feel for speed and cartoon like characterisation than anything else she's made - could it be that Jimmy had more than just a helping hand ? All the elements of his other action flicks are ready and correct if you but look ...

Funnily enough, I had recorded that programme and only got around to watching it last night.
I haven't gone through all the other replies so apologies if I'm repeating what others have said.
I can't remember off hand if I've watched an Anna Span film, at a guess I would say probably yes. Which might suggest that they are not as unique as she would have us believe.
I couldn't really say that her films are much different to a lot of other stuff out there, Viv Thomas films spring to mind.
She talked about the kind of films you get in the UK where some 'ugly older bloke' basically pays a much younger, more attractive porn model to have sex with him while he films it, just because he's got the money and the equipment. I know exactly who she was talking about, but she made it sound as if ALL UK porn is like that and that hers was a unique product.
She also claimed that she made a point of using good looking male models, whereas other UK porn sticks with the 'fat, ugly older guy' type. Yet 3 of the faces that appeard the most in the filming of her scenes were Steve Hooper, Tony DeSergio and Mark Slone. 3 of the UKs best known studes, you see them in tons of UK films.

So to conclude, and talking purely about Anna Span, yes I do think there is an element of gimmick about it.
I just couldn't see what the fuss was about. She was shooting the same stuff that I've seen plenty of times before, with male performers that I've seen in tons of films before.

It's interesting when you think about it. It's not just a question of how many female directed films are actually directed by women. It's also a question as to "How many adult production companies run by women specialize in films actually produced and directed by women?"

InPulse and ArchAngel are the only ones that immediately come to mind.

Kylie Ireland is turning out some great stuff, but I think that Bry directs the majority of their titles. Jill Kelly Productions is the same situation.

I'd be interested in any other women owned companies that direct their own stuff. Specifically if they use all female directors.

It might be odd, but it does lead to interesting research on differences in aspects of the productions:

Is there a general tendency toward better production values in women directed porn?

Is there less POV and gonzo in women directed porn?

Is there less spitting in female directed porn than male directed porn?

Is there any difference among the the woman directed pron from the man directed pron at all?

All interesting things to consider.

When I see a movie shot by someone that doesn't tend to portray a mysogynistic view towards women, like Andrew Blake, Seymore Butts or Will Ryder, I notice it. So I would think I'd tend to notice a mysogenistic view portrayed by a woman director if it was there.

The same stands to reason for other aspects of a production by men or women. It would be interesting to see if there are any differences between male and female directed porn. I just think that there are too few truly woman owned and operated/directed movies to try and see any distinction at this point in time.

Speaking of La Breillat (French art film director) -

It's hard for me to imagine someone other than a woman making her films (as flawed as they sometimes are). Then again, she not only directs them, but also writes the screenplays. I believe she also arranges the for the financing.

There's this one scene in 'Anatomy of Hell', where the main male character is in a bar, bragging to another man about how he's just 'destroyed' the woman that he's been sleeping with. Breillat perfectly captures how inane and hollow a man sounds when he's BS-ing his way through one of these monologues. The reality was that the woman had been manipulating this male character for several nights.

I was surprised to find out that the movie 'American Psycho' was directed by a woman. Not that the movie had the imprint of a woman's directorship all over it, but because it was so dark and disturbing. I suppose I'm showing my lack of imagination.

I've only seen two porn films directed by women. I could see no difference between these, and those directed by men. These two movies definitely weren't any better, and definitely weren't directed towards a female audience.

Michael Haneke decently adapted a script(novel) of Elfriede Jelinek to the screen.

The misanthropism(?) - which IMHO includes misogyny - the works of Despentes portrays, I would have contributed to a man, if I followed the traditional gender roles.

The Slumber Party Massacre was directed by a woman and written by Rita May Brown. I also think all the sequels, with the exception of The Cheerleader Massacre, were directed and written by women as well, but I know about the first one for sure.

If you want to see a medium of porn or erotica where women really rule in the extreme arena, check out some of the books. Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy, Pauline Reage's Story of O, and MANY other books.

I read a performer make this statement who was on the set and you have to admit her movies has Jim Powers written all over it. It doesn't matter really as long as the movie is good, that's the most important thing.

As for Mary Harron directing American Psycho, read the book by Bret Easton Ellis and you will see what a terrible job she did. The book is like 100 times more violent. Christian Bale did a fantastic job though.
