If women like Romantic films and Romantic Novels so much, why don't they watch porn?

Hey guys,

So this is a "paradox" of life. Porn watchers are often stereotyped as nerds who play video games. However, I have noticed most guys don't watch Romantic Films or Romantic Novels. Most guys stick to action films and Science Fiction. If you delve deeper into novels, you'll see many novel genres are "dominated" by women. For instance, even in fantasy, there's a genre of Romantic Fantasy. Much of the fiction world is female-centered.

In theory, you might say, "Romance has nothing to do with porn." However, if you take some time to go through some of these novels and films, most of them have tons of kissing, touching, make-outs, foreplay. So the actual "sex act" is not shown, but even then sometimes they'll show "passionate make outs" when the characters take off their clothes. Sometimes they'll also have scenes where the characters are naked in bed talking. There's even films or novels where the female character breaks up with her current BF, meets up with her ex, hooks up with a random guy, then gets in a relationship with another guy. While they don't show it on screen, by the end of the movie, she has had sex with 4 different men.

What I am trying to get at is that romance, Erotic films (which also have a main female audience) tend to be the closest to porn out of all the film genres. A lot of other film genres that are popular with men will have female "eye candy," like a model who will show up at a car race. But most of the time the focus is on the actions of men fighting against other men or trying to achieve some goals like being the best at video games. etc.

Which leads me back to question, wouldn't it make sense for women to watch porn?

1. The most sentimental and romantic people probably watch porn less than everyone else because porn rarely looks like the women are enjoying what's happening, nevermind enjoying it romantically.

2. Women do watch porn. Pornhub says something like a third of its viewers are women, and I don't know how confident we should be that that number is real, but in the Facebook groups and such where women feel comfortable, a not-insignificant number will sometimes talk about what they like to watch.

Women most definitely watch porn, they're just as lot more discreet about it.

[mod edit: you added nothing to that post other than to edit it and add a tube site link in the middle of the other person's text. I don't know what you're up to but whatever it is, don't do it.]

This is a facinating topic and probably too long to go into here. But as a youth, us guys would be
scolded for having a magazine, while the girls would be okay with a romance novel, a la Jane Austin.
It is so unfair when in reality erotica and romance are 2 sides of the same coin, and society would be
psychologically healthier if erotica and romance were merged. Hugh Hefner got a lotta things right.

I don't know any gay women close enough to ask, but for straight women the core reason is simple; the porn available is just not good enough and is not aimed at them as an audience.

In almost every mainstream, predominately heterosexual porn film I've seen, the women are portrayed as hungry for sex with freshly dolled-up faces and salon-style hair ready to be touseled or pulled. Their breasts are generally perky, frequently huge, and quite a lot of the time, those bulbous breasts are not even real.

But it's not necessarily those women who star in porn films who are the problem. It's how that content is being consumed by the rest of us, ie: men.

Most women I know have pretty hectic lives and although like my wife of 33 years, many have healthy sex drives or naughty desires, they simply don't have the time or energy to be waiting in various locations, perfectly air-brushed, and enthusiastically ready for an hour plus sexathon.

Porn constantly drives home the message that there are plenty of women out there ready to have sex at the drop of a hat - anytime, anyplace - it really sets a high bar for the ordinary housewife, mother, or busy working woman who consistently feels inadequate because she's not eager for sex after a long day of working, cleaning, or caring for demanding children.

So many women are not open to the idea of porn because it simply makes them feel bad about themselves. They look in the mirror and feel they can't compete with the woman on film - no woman wants to feel that her man is thinking about the woman on screen rather than her.

Boys have traditionally been viewed as sneaking looks at girlie mags or watching dirty movies from their preteen and early teen years. The way women have been brought up, many are still scared to admit that they like visual images. So they start making up fantasies in their head and I guess once you have certain fantasies established in your head it's hard to get anything in reality to live up to that. Another consideration is that porn is often too explicit. There's a reason women love all those romance novels - all the sexuality without having to see it raw as depicted in porn. Remember, seeing something is the primary driver for male sexual excitement but for most women, it's the sense of touch and emotional intimacy. Hard to get that stimulated from watching porn.

Another obstacle is that women excel in sublimating their sexual fantasies. Women can find anything pornographic if they think about it enough and lots of women would get more turned on by watching movies involving dressing up and power relationships, than in watching a group of over-worked-out men and puffy-lipped, big-breasted chicks getting it on in the back of a car.

Of course, there are those women in the minority and who enjoy porn and sex regardless. I'm just saying that most don't and never will - they're just not wired that way.

I don't think women are the only ones who like romantic movies. Now most guys may gravitate more toward action films but I know that I love romantic films just as much as I love actions films and I doubt I'm in the minority. Whether guys admit to liking romantic movies may have less to do with them liking it and more with their fear that it would make them look less masculine. To those guys I say fuck em because you can learn some great things about women by watching romantic movies.

There is little to no romance in most porn video/movies and almost none in about anything made in the last decade. For one thing it's difficult to portray romance on screen. It requires talent behind and in front of the camera. There is a reason why even mainstream romance movies sometime fail. Now imagine trying to include romance in a porn movie. One where there is an actual scenario to move the plot along and believable characters being portrayed by the porn performers. Once upon a time you could do that but those days are gone and I don't think they are coming back. I don't even think that women would care to watch a porn movie even if there was romance in it.

Erotica on the other hand can be portrayed on screen but it requires that the people producing porn have the will and desire to add it to their porn videos and even then. You still need the talent behind and in front of the camera and that is not often a possibility. The sad part is I think erotica in porn would greatly enhance the quality of the sex scene but seeing as people complain when there is barely 10 minutes of non sex related interaction between the performers prior to them fucking for the next 40 minutes that I don't think they would care to see what constitute erotica in their gonzo porn.
