Does anyone on here have any advice for the budding porn reviewer? I'm a (UK based) freelance writer and one of the things I like writing about is porn. I've written for art magazines, art gallery catalogues, entertainment websites and have done a bit of corporate writing.
If any porn reviewers can give me any advice that would be really appreciated.
Thanks

Tons of people do it on the internet for free. Why would anyone pay someone else to do it?

I think the only hope of doing this would be to get a book deal for some kind of angle on the industry. Recent books like The Other Hollywood and the Holmes bio and classics like Sinema and Porn Gold seem to suggest there's always some interest in the subject from the publishing industry.

Star a blog about porn and maybe you can get advertising money from that

"Tons of people do it on the internet for free. Why would anyone pay someone else to do it?"
You could say this about so many things, but people still get paid for writing. If I write a film review for a national magazine I can get £200-400 depending on the publication. People write film reviews on the internet for free, this doesn't negate the fact that I can still get paid for a film review in the right place.
"Start a blog and maybe you can get advertising money from that"
I started a fetish blog a few months ago, but have to admit that I'm not the most internet savvy of people. How would I go about getting adverters interested and also increase traffic to my site?
My blog focuses on the use of latex in porn, reviewing scenes and I'm currently working on getting some interviews with stars.
My blog is here: http://latexandporn.blogspot.com

Latex,i would just say continue to do reviews but take them to a larger audience(right here on ADT)although you do a blog i think a lot more people would see your reviews on this site,as you are into latex scenes etc-are there not specialist sites that cater to those needs, maybe you should join a few of those sites/forums etc and offer to do reviews of titles for free or link your blog and if you have got reviews on ADT then link to that too as the more reviews the better.
You never know the chance to write/review for a Latex themed site might come up and the first thing they might ask is "Please show us some of your current and previous work/reviews" i do not even know if guys such as Astroknight,Crucifixio Jones and Bono-One who deliver fantastic informative polished reviews on this site get paid from anyone outwith adt for there writing and reviewing skills,or they just do it for a love of porn and the girls etc.
You could become a reviewer on ADT,submit a review and if all goes well then you could get taken on board and with some titles to choose from you could start getting your reviews out to a larger audience. You get to choose the movie and keep it but you will not get paid and because you have certain movies that you are only looking to watch and review it might be best just going through your own collection and reviewing them.
I have done reviews on this site and really enjoy doing them,i am not on board as an ADT'er reviewer i just do a review of titles that i have bought and it's just about giving something back to the industry for me and if one person was to buy a title on the strength of my review then i would be thrilled.Good luck Latex and the fact that you have already been getting paid to write for non porn sites is great.

^ That all sounds like stellar advice, Stinky. Bravo.
I write in a few different "spheres," the main one being academic. I have a couple of publications, neither of which I got paid for. It's kind of something you have to do for free and prove yourself, and then that gets you a job.
In the freelance/mainstream world (where the production/consumption of material is less of a circle jerk) it would seem that unsolicited submissions of work can be appropriate for some places, while in other places they require either an agent, or a query. The only time I submitted a suggestion for an article for a publication that paid, I didn't get a reply, so I can't tell you much about that. What I can tell you is that me not trying these folks again (follow up email, or simply writing the piece and submitting it) is bad for professional development - persevere and take the initiative.

I had an idea about how to get paid for porn viewing, and though I usually hoard ideas like a squirrel hoards nuts, I thought I'd share this here since porn involves our nuts:
What if you could fool the government into giving you money to watch porn? Huh? Doesn't the government have some sort of Firearms Tobacco and Porn agency? What if you sidled up to their office wearing very professional clothing and marketed yourself as a skilled pornography sifter---the guy they'll want on their team who will work on their behalf to ensure that all the porn being produced in this nation is above board and on the up and up. I would offer to view all the adult material that crosses my desk, checking it to see if it meets with the standards for decency that the current administration has put in place. Always with an eye out for "hinky" or illegal porn, which I would flag for further investigation by another government agency to whom I would send the suspect porn in a similar fashion to how State employees shift paperwork from desk to desk for a living. I mean, the model for this type of useless job is already in place! I wouldn't be the nation's porn czar so much as the Porn Oversight Committee's Deputy Assistant Manager In Charge of Viewing. I'd expect from $45,000 to $85,000 but I'd probably accept less.

There's some great advice here, I suppose I just need to get my name out there and write some stuff for the fun of it. An interesting point about getting paid to watch porn. A friend of mine is a trading standards officer and he has been going through literally hundreds of films to check whether the descriptions on the boxes match the film's contents. In the UK we have the Trade Descriptions act which basically means a porn film claims to show double anal, there had damn well be a double anal scene in there. If the company is lying about the content they open themselve up for legal action. This guy is protecting consumers where it matters dammit.

Thank you Gore Gore Girl, regarding your own blog do you track down all those titles and purchase them yourself,im still stunned that there was a porn version of Michael Jackson's Thriller aka Driller that was fascinating reading about that title lol.You should have porn labels sending you stuff to review such is your reviewing style and passion for the movies you document/review.What im trying to say is what are you doing on Friday

It will help you build up a porn "portfolio" if you like, another thing-outwith ADT when i am searching for a porn movie that is not listed here and the site i go to has the box cover/artwork but no review for it perhaps that is the time to send an e-mail to the site owners letting them know you have a review of said movie or would be willing to review the title for them and see what the reply is(if they do reply)they might well be keen as a good/honest review might get the title shifting of there shelves and making them money?..they might offer you the title and a small fee for doing the review i honestly do not know, might be worth a try though.

^ Unabated as usual...
I buy 99.9% of the movies I review (I spend way too much money on porn...). I have had three people send me stuff - David Aaron Clark sent me a copy of Pure just a little while before he died, and he said nice things to me via email about the blog/the review. That's way better than $100. Then Mike Raso from After Hours cinema sent me some movies, which I'm working through, and have posted some little reviews of. Finally, DMPR sent me a copy of 2040 aaaages ago, and I have yet to get my shit together (I have started writing it, just haven't finished). That's it.
I think the reason why I have so few people sending me stuff, aside from perhaps people just not wanting to (they might think I suck), I have quite a particular focus. So, if random companies sent me the new Bros Before Hos #456, I'm not sure I would particularly want to spend time reviewing it. On average, one of my full-length reviews takes about three hours to complete, not including the time it takes to watch the movie, so I'm pretty picky. But honestly, I'd rather have those three people sending me stuff that fits my esoteric interests, and who have expressed an understanding and respect for what I do, than a hundred people sending me completely random stuff.

I expect theres somebody, if not some taskforce, already assigned to these duties, and
their oversight is likely conducted with an otherwise uncomfortable measure of "transparency".
Needless to say, working out of your home would be a reach at best, along with any raincoater-equipted hi backed theatre seats, or even dimly lit viewing rooms for that matter.
Balking about production values probably wouldn't go far with superiors, and the frequent trips to the shitter for unloading, or re-stacking an incessant case of wood, could become annoying.
Not to be a spoilsport, but any wouldbe infiltrator of moral decency will likely be of more soiled sort's.

This thread is 5 years old but still will probably be of interest to someone.
The first thing that popped into my head were magazines and online retailers who keep a staff of reviewers, but it'll be peanuts.

^ I like how the thread got momentarily sidetracked into talking about PhDs in English/writing. Best part:
"A masters in fine arts is not a Ph.D. It is a terminal degree but nevertheless is a masters degree.
Now we know that the B.S. is bull shit.
We also know that the M.S. is more shit.
And the Ph.D. is
...
...
bada boom
....
Piled High and Deep"
I might put this as the epigraph in my dissertation.
Edit: added "punchline."

I loved Vodka Tonic.
On a side note - should Astro's phenomenal body of work be entered into the Guiness Book Of Records!

Latex, the great thing about ADT is that your reviews here are all your own work and by that i mean if you were getting paid for a review would you possibly be more generous in your reviewing style even if some of the movie was lame, money talks in some cases...

On the subject of reviews i cannot seem to shorten my reviews down if anything they are getting longer and longer lol, from the lame jokes and humor that i try to put into them taking the reader away from the movie only to put them back into the movie while they are probably still recovering and thinking "What The Fuck"
I can be serious when it comes to reviews Fuck My Tits 6-Elegant Angel
I have even been know to get into a bit of gender role-play,my pussy was on fire after that review lol.I even phoned in sick to work the next morning citing "Woman's Problems" as the reason i would not be in Bitchcraft-Evil Angel
Then purely for laughs i went down the calcium road, even when i close my eyes at night i can still see those huge weapons of mass satisfaction with those nipples sticking out like 2 drug dealers in a school playground, happy days indeed Milena Velba Milk
I then decided to check out some "pussy pump" titles and that was an experience i can tell you lol i was in gammon flap heaven with the anal action in those movies, those big squidgy petted lips melted my heart..eh
[ invalid url ]...
So the moral of the story is Latex just have fun,you never know who's eyes will be cast over your review (i think mine are being monitored by the FBI) just have fun and treat it like a hobby and not a chore.
