Cats do such things. I guess you'll have to re-partition and format your disk. At least.

Your cat has a virus. Which one? I don't know.

Search Google for "feline virus" and read the symptoms.

Good luck!

You've got the jamesn virus. The only cure is to go to Walmart, buy a shotgun, come home and shoot the damned thing.

1. Have you rebooted?
2. Have you looked at the Keyboard properties in the Control Panel?

I don't know if this helps but...
Maybe CTRL, Shift, or Alt Gr -button is pressed down (it's broken or there is some dirt.)

If CTRL or "Alt Gr" is pressed down, it opens new Tab in Firefox.
If Shift is pressed down, new window opens.
But this is my FF, and settings are not 100% defaults.

Jamesn is a holistic keyboard healer of sorts. He collects broken ones off the street and nurses them back to health, so maybe he'll post his opinion.

I suspect a reboot will correct it, if not the cat probably nibbled on the cable, mistaking it for a mouse cable.

When jamesn dies his family will have to haul off his keyboards in a 20yd dumpster

kataboom, if you are going to buy a new keyboard, you could have a look at this one.

But remember to treat your cat properly. Pussies that don't get stroked as often as they like sometimes destroy a man's tools, so to speak.

Yeah, well, you'll have that.

The suggestion was a serious one. I've had it happen with keyboards and speaker wires. It's better to check the simple stuff first.

Well, that's true.

Sometimes dogs are good at destroying computers too. A friend of mine once had a DVI output port destroyed because his dog ran through the room in a state of crazy overexcitement.

Cats are attracted to Cat-5 and Cat-6 Ethernet cables.

You should go wireless.

This is why it's sometimes hard to give technical assistance- you only get half the story.

Last night my mother calls and says: "I need a new computer, my screen keeps shrinking until it's just a white line".
B:"it's either a bad monitor or your video card mom, you can check it by plugging in a different monitor"
M:"I don't have one"
B:"I have three or four, I'll bring one by tomorrow"
M:"Well, I called Gateway support about it"
B:"Yeah, what did they say?"
M:"To try plugging in a different monitor"
B:"Hmmm, oh-kay?"
M:"So who would have the best prices on a new computer?"

it sounds like the control or shift key was stuck.

i tried both of those keys. & what does "being stuck" mean? this laptop keyboard isnt really a mechanical object. its more like a push button keyboard. i dunno.

I had a problem like that with an old Dell Inspiron 4100. I disconnected the keyboard and shook it out and that fix the problem. Perhaps a tiny crumb was stuck in it preventing the keyboard from working properly.

another possibility is perhaps the contacts are dirty or worn?
