The ads commandeer the screen. They expand and contract. They cover the text and refuse to budge. And then there is the dreaded X — the one that invites you to close the ad yet seems impervious to repeated clicks of the cursor or the jabs and thrusts of even the most powerful fingers. (Perhaps you have tried a hammer?) Sometimes the ads dance and move across the screen, forcing the user into a hot pursuit of the X. “How many times have you hit the X and it doesn’t work?” said Tony Weisman, the chief executive of the digital agency DigitasLBi North America. “Now it’s just a cruel joke.” Online advertisers and consumers have tried to outmaneuver each other since the early days of the web — with sellers continually finding ways to prolong engagement with ads and users trying equally hard to avoid them. dogzcatcher All-Star Member Fat bottomed girls make the rockin' world go round! 1551 Posts 5/09	Posted - Dec 11 2015 : 11:41PM Because of so many bells and whistles going off at CNN, I quit CNN and use Fox or Reuters. Stanley Moon All-Star Member 4 Wishes Left 346 Posts 8/15	Posted - Dec 12 2015 : 12:01PM Turning off defeats a lot of it, too. But it also defeats a lot of sites where you need it (like this one). I quit using a bunch of websites that I used to like because the ads got too obnoxious. [Link]
Goldstein All-Star Member "You have sacrificed nothing and no one." 3689 Posts 8/10	Posted - Dec 12 2015 : 12:18PM When one of those "block-the-page-you're-trying-to-read" boxes pops-up, I immediately exit the site entirely. I will not click on the "x" to close the box, as many of these are spring-loaded fake close buttons that can easily infect your computer. If another "pop-under" ad is lying in wait, after I've exited the site altogether, I will often exit my browser, reboot into Safe Mode and run anti-virus/malware scans before continuing using the computer in question. charn fubar 2880 Posts 12/09	Posted - Dec 14 2015 : 11:11PM Some sites show nothing until I disable Adblock, which I don't. I don't recall seeing a moving ad, but rebooting is frequently necessary at imgur and other pic sites. [Link]
