I want to softmod my xbox, I don't want a modchip because I really don't play it that often.

Has anyone here done it, and if so could you point me to a good tutorial , thanks

take a look at the "for complete beginners" tutorial at the link I posted. Then look at the posts under that thread. Then look at some of the other more specific tutorials. There should be a walkthrough.

Wouldn't this fall under the same category a DVD ripping? The circumventing of protection is what the modding is about right? For some reason I recall reading how the XBox was made to help prevernt this?? Anyway, even the link (filesharingtalk) drew suspisions - for the sake of argument, what can you do with a modded XBox?

Just trying to get info here. Personally I don't even own an XBox

modded xboxes are good for:
-installing linux on it
-web or ftp server
-region free dvd player
-media player (with an html interface too)
-shoutcast internet radio streaming
-movie trailers
-rss feeds
-weather lookup
-playing pirated games
-multiplayer gaming without xbox live
-don't forget 5.1 surround sound, progressive video and widescreen support.

a lot of this functionality is going to exist on the xbox 360. For me the coolest feature is xbox media centre.

i don't have an x-box, but as i understand it the hardware can be made to accept a hd and run on os-it's closer to a computer than a traditional console. it's not something microsoft is going to pursue users for or affect drew and steph--it's basically like tearing the tags off a pillow once you've bought it.

I connect to my xbox through a router using a cable and I've had no problems. Again, I have a mod chip and have xbmc as my operating system. The ftp features are built into and controlled by the operating system (ex xbmc, avalaunch, mxm, etc)

the forums at xboxscene will be a better source for your answers than this board.

I have and older Xecuter 2 chip. There's a way you can rig up an external switch to turn it on or off. I don't know the details on the other chips though. There may be more to it than turning a mod chip on and off, like a locked hard drive. But there are utilities to do that for you to.

how to use xbox live on a modded xbox tutorial

There are other tutorials on xbox-scene as well. There's also an xbox live alternative called KAI.

This is almost never the case for hobbyist modding. Doing so would make no sense due to the cost.

It's largely the intellectual challenge that drives the people designing the original mod. Making it do something useful seems the main issue.

By and large once something is sold it belongs to the consumer. Ford has no say in what tires you put on your car. As long as copyright issues are avoided there is no problem with a mod.
