Ok I reinstalled the network drivers. Then I did a ipconfig /release. But when I try to do a ipconfig /renew the command hangs. Any new suggestions.

Reset your modem and/or router

Do a power cycle on your modem first. Just unplug it from the wall, count to 15 and plug it back in. If that don't work then there's a little round recessed button on it. Take a pen and hold that button in to the count of 10. If that don't work, well now it's time to reset your router if you have one, which is basically the same as resetting your modem.

All else fails, call your ISP, 99% of the time they offer free tech support for this. You may have a busted WinSock and if that's the case I can email you a tool that will fix that in about 3 minutes...

I usually just disable and enable the Local Area Connection in Network Places (or whatever they're calling it in XP). I find that works much better than using the command line; who can
say why.

You might want to take a look at your hardware profile and see if XP still has the old adapter listed. It could be that your IP is binding to that instead of the active one.
