Found that out the hard way after placing an order and then following up with customer service when the coupon was not reflected on the invoice.

The response was:

The coupon shows up as:
The ADT Home Page shows:
I don't see anywhere that says that purchasing a used title doesn't qualify.

Just thought I'd put out the warning in case anyone else had the same idea. I hope XRent will correct the verbage on the coupon.

You'd think they would do the proper thing and honor the coupon. Even if on ADT it is worded wrong, it is worded incorrectly in their shopping cart as well.

Seems like poor business sense to me. Certainly not worth the loss of a customer.

Just my 2 cents.

It's possible that their order system is written in such a way that the coupon could not be applied as part of the order process. Most stores have a way of designating which product types coupons can be applied to.

In XRent's defense, they have had two types of product categories for a few years now: Purchase and Rental. In their vernacular Used Items are not a subset of Purchase, they are a product category of their own. They might think that this distinction is obvious because they deal with it day in and day out. To the outsider a Purchase is any item you end up owning when you pay for it. Their product pages list the three categories and prices of Rent, Used and Purchase along with the add to cart buttons.

I don't even care anymore. I was disappointed by the customer service response I received that first implied that I should have known that it wouldn't work then shifted blame in another response. No acknowledgement that the wording might have been confusing and not even a "sorry for any inconvenience." Oh well, maybe I'm just having a bad day. I just wanted to make sure no one else had the same thought and would be surprised.

Good points about the shopping cart, Drew. Unfortunately, it's hard to know what level of technology a store has. Some stores don't have the ability to apply coupons real-time (so there's no reflection of the coupon during checkout). Others won't even let the coupon show up if the purchase doesn't qualify. XRent seems to have a coupon wallet concept that stores any and all coupons, but they are only applied at checkout if they qualify. I don't know how anyone would know that except for trial and error though.

FWIW, I received a nice letter from the operations manager at XRentDVD explaining the situation. I'm pretty satisifed with his explanation -- I just wish the customer service response would have been as good in my initial contact.

FYI, they have modified their site to clarify this coupon. I just activated it. It now says:

$5 Off Any One NEW Purchase (not valid on used items)
Expires: 12/31/2002
