if you look behind the press releases, vivid and the other companies like wicked, they are not doing as well as you think.they have great pr people, but if your product is bab it will catch up with you sooner or later. i know people will say couples love these companies, but really, how many men watch porn with their wives? vivid and others like it,i think things are bleek for you.

How much of that is based on fact or how much is based on your opinion? I'd tend to agree with DP Jones: Vivid has one of the most lucrative cable and satellite arrangements. They've made movies that have generally been substandard for a decade, but they know how to market and know how to tap markets.

When companies like EVN & FatDog have been aound for years and show no sign of being sucked down the drain, I don't see much danger for Vivid & others like them.

Hey, how's it going,

From what I have seen, I think Cherry Boxxx will not be around very long as a production company. The product I have seen from them has been completely unacceptable, but they seem to churn out compilation after compilation. And they just bought all of this new material. They could be around for a while flooding the market with endless compilations, but as an actual original producer I don't see a long future for them.

Yeah, you're entitled to you're opinion but I really don't think you know what you're talking about. Vivid and Wicked seem to have it pretty well sorted out in terms of the REAL business angles -- cable sales, hotels, "soft" versions, etc.

And to say a company like Evil Angel "will be" on top is kind of like saying the Yankees may win the pennant. They ARE on top. And they're only getting bigger.

Better yet, why not tell us what companies are doing that makes you think they will fail -- or succeed?

All I see is you giving your opinion based on companies that you apparently don't like. Vivid certainly is showing no signs that I have seen of going anywhere and Wicked keeps releasing stronger and stronger products and is one of the leaders for the quality of their DVD's. I don't see any signs that Adam & Eve or Digital Playground are having problems either. I don't know much about Jill Kelly so I can't state anything about them. With a statement like this and your follow up one you should post items that prove your statement.

I've watched adult films with several past girlfriends. I've given some titles to a female friend who watches them with her husband, so apparently I'm not the only one.

Yeah, sorry to harp, but the people who own those companies are laughing all the way to the bank. I hardly know anyone who's been part of a couple who HASN'T watched porn with their boyfriend, girlfriend, or spouse, and I can also tell you that I've watched porn with other men's wives on several occasions (no hanky-panky, just a way to pass the time for one reason or another, like at a party or hanging out drinking beer in the afternoon). Women tend to prefer feature-style movies, and that's what companies like Vivid and Wicked specialize in. And now with pay-per-view services thru digital cable, it's all gonna continue to skyrocket.

I think companies that are more likely to bite the dust are the super low-budget copycat gonzo companies. And those that try to expand too fast and become undercapitalized. Simon Wolf just went under, for instance.

babby is right.

Because we all know a man who types in all lower case letters and doesn't know how to use the space bar can't be wrong. All companies that make features will die a glorious death and all gonzo distributors will thrive, even amongst the 30-something female viewers and fans who don't care to see gagging teary-eyed blowjobs, anal sex and facials.

Bow down to babby, he's got fuckin' ESP. My prediction for his next prediction: In ten years no one will find Kaylani Lei, Stormy, Sunrise Adams or Tera Patrick attractive anymore. It's because they won't do gangbangs or swallow, you know.

You can stand by your opinion all you like but it doesn't make it any less uninformed.

Business can only thrive with competition and variety. This is obviously a concept you don't understand since you named every company that makes features or specializes in softer-edged or girl/girl porn as headed to the glue factory while all the companies you favor who all produce nearly identical material are suddenly the best thing since sliced bread. That's crossing the line from informed opinion to ignorant personal bias.

Not everyone in the world likes the same things you like and just because you have no use for a company like JKP or Adam & Eve doesn't mean no one else does or that we should collectively put those companies on some sort of chopping block.

To put the shoe on the other foot, why don't you post this in "The Feature Side" folder and see how they respond. How would you feel if you found a thread there entitled "Evil Angel/RLD/ZT/PXP/DVSX/etc will all DIE in the next 5 years! " written by some moron who only likes movies by Vivid, Digital Playground and Wicked? Now maybe you can grasp how stupid this all sounds coming from you. I'm actually interested in knowing where New Sensations/Digital Sin and Sin City/Mayhem fit into your oh-so-enlightened vision of the future. The only person who needs to change the way they do business or go away is you.

You'll have to ask the expert, babby, of course but I think he'll say because they are so hardcore that whoever owns Anabolic/Diabolic should probably run for President. BECAUSE THEY'D WIN!

I think everyone here knows that these feature companies are in exactly ZERO danger of going under. Well, everyone except for babby because he thinks couples or g/g product "is bad" and with "catch up" with them. He may be wrong, but he can see this coming down the road. I don't know how the future looks "bleek" for them when historically and even now, companies like that have traditionally done very well but it's the gonzo companies that die and new ones spring up to replace them almost yearly.

I think babby thinks no one watches porn with their girlfriends or wives because he has neither.

the one thing about features is...

there will be a hotel market, and cabal market that for social resins will prefer to buy features... I'm not saying thats what I would reach for in the shop. But that gives them some life.

silly I know

I prefer gonzo mostly, but you can't confuse your taste with good busiiness thinking.

My take is that Hustler will pretty much own everything anyway, and you'll have a couple of companies, like Evil Angel and RLD -- which are primarly distribution outfits, the directors own their product, remember? -- that dominate the gonzo market. Vivid will probably be one of the companies that will ALWAYS be in business. I think though that the gonzo market is going to so oversaturate itself that companies you think look good now won't make it a full 10 years. But then, Anabolic had a terrible two years in terms of losing talent and directors, but they seem to be cranking away --

Probably, what happens with the INternet and downloading discs and such will have more with the future of the industry -- and all the ancillary stuff,

They've got a catalog to milk, and appear to have bottomed out. As long as they control expenses they are likely to stick around.

Elegant Angel gets my vote as least likely to survive, at least under current management.

Maybe I'm just really confused but didn't Vivid change ownership in the last year or two? Or did they just change distribution to the retail/rental markets?

In the video retail market Vivid really does look like a low-grade comp outfit. But they still produce a few features and those few may be enough to supply the cable/satellite markets; they may not need more than a couple of new titles a month.

Interestingly neither Vivid nor Wicked appear to be carried by my local porn shop, which makes a real effort to attract couples. I'll have to ask the clerks; they may rack them separately, away from the "Five Cocks in my Ass!" titles likely to turn off the Vivid crowd.

babby, surviving has nothing to do with being cutting edge, or pushing the limits. It has everything to do with what the market wants to buy.
Do you travel much? I did for quite a while for work. Every hotel that has PPV porn carries Vivid. That alone would catapult a company near the top in earnings, while not adding much additional expenses.
Those aren't opinions, they are fact. There is a very real world difference between the two.
I have also worked in a adult-video only store (years ago). I did have couples come in, often looking for recommendations. After a quick assesment of what the woman could handle, I pointed them in a direction. More often than not, it was Vivid.
Have you noticed that in sports, especially the Olympics, they have been telling the life stories of athletes more? This is to draw in the female viewers, who like a story more (as consumer studies show). This also holds true for porn, which is why features are put out.
The average poster here is a bit more jaded than the average (great majority) porn viewer, go we tend to like the gonzo and hard hardcore more than the average viewer. The real money is in the mainstream (of anything). This is why McDonalds rakes in the money with a bad product line. Even with their fall in sales numbers, they are #1 - with a very poor product.
Also watching porn has nothing to do with not having the girlfriend around, so yes, I do watch with girlfriends. Normally, it is not the ATOGM, gaping, pissing, gangbang flicks. Sometimes (thankfully) I have a girlfriend who likes/doesn't mind those DVD's.
Those groups of contract girls cost money. That is the only reason they sign, and the only reason to sign them is because you think they can generate the sales.

As an aside, can anybody tell me what did happen to VCA? It seems like a decade ago, they were one of the best companies in terms of production value, hot women, and good sex.

Well I think there is a market for all kinds of companies there are the markets that hit the cable and hotels and then there is the gonzo market that hits the jack off artist. I think any of us can stay in business as long as we stay with the times. Look at Madonna she didn't die out in the 80's like most of her pop rivals she just got better with age. Like anything you must go with what the fans want and live up to it or you will be left behind. 80's style porn is out so those stuck in the 80's need to move forward or yes they will fade to black and be gone.

No they are not going out...RLD is going to be around for awhile longer... they are making their prices low to be able to supply the demand that people want.. People want to purchase their products and thus there ya go...

As for companies that will bottom out in the next five to ten years as everyone else has said Vivid and Wicked are not going to bottom out. Hell Vivid has been around since the 80's so there is little to no chance that they will go out...Wicked since the early 90's if not mistaken...

One company that I think will go out is going to be Dane/Forbidden Prod.... They are one of my favorite companies to buy stuff from, but they seem to be getting lesser and lesser new titles coming out... I hope its just a lull, but I don't know...

Talking of companies liable to fold - what the hell keeps Leisure Time afloat ?! These shlubs are possibly the worst studio out there right now , and yet they show no signs of going away , or of slowing their mad paced release schedule . It confuses me no end .

I agree with Skronk that it's more likely to be Gonzo companies who will bear the brunt of any porn consolidation . There's that Ashcroft pressure to factor into the equation too you know , and any extra expense ( say : Lawyer's bills ) could be the difference between red and black ink for these studios . And who's pushing the envelope hardest , and thus most likely to attract the attentions of America's moral crusaders ? All those gonzo companies with the most 'cutting edge' sexual content , that's who .

On a side issue . Weren't Wicked bought up by LFP a while back ? I heard a rumor that this deal had gone down , and that subsequently the budgets of future productions had been capped at about $50K . Any truth in this ? For that matter , just which companies does LFP own now ? Wait , it might be quicker just to list the ones which they don't . We badly need a Monopolies and Mergers commission for the Porn industry !

Crucifixio - Harsh , very harsh ! Hilarious as hell , though . It had me spluttering into my cornflakes ! [;0]

Babby, look what you started!

But don't you remember this thread, just a month ago, where you were making the same complaints about Vivid comp tapes? How you can't understand how they make money?

One way Vivid and the like sell a lot of tapes/DVD's, and reach a lot of consumers is through the Adam & Eve catalogs that get sent out all over the US. Once you are on the A&E mailing list, it's nearly impossible to get off. The catalog must be 30+ pages of one comp tape after another, nearly all featuring actresses from 2-5 years ago. But if you aren't up on who the latest porn stars are, you wouldn't know that you're watching stuff that is old, and paying top dollar for it. They also offer Private, Jill Kelly and other feature DVD's, some of which are the newer stuff. You never see anything in those catalogs from Evil Angel, RLD, etc. They don't even offer the Fashionistas for sale.

This is how these companies stay in business, while it seems like the gonzo companies fight each other tooth and nail for the limited amount of money from hardcore porn consumers.

Seems to me your list is more of a "wish" list than having any basis in reality. Vivid is by far the strongest studio out there in terms of their financial situation - like them or not. I read your list and it was like the "die" list was all the couples-themed studios and the "survive" list was all the harder-edged gonzo studios.

Has Vivid released any financial results?

The question wasn't which company is strong now, but rather which are most likely to "die" within ten years. Those are very different questions, and any investor can tell you they often have different answers (any ex-Compaq lifers out there?)

Vivid should be in good shape now. However there is no guarantee against competive change or regulatory change, etc.

Moreover it's not clear how much cash is being left in the business rather than paid out (if I owned a porn studio I would certainly pay out every penny and reinvest only as needed).

That's all true, but babby's bias is all too obvious to take a word he says seriously.

It's just like Gunman pointed out: all his "predictions to die" were couples/features companies, while he predicted all the gonzo companies would surive. That's ludicrous. That's saying that in ten years consumers will no longer want couples-oriented features and we all know that's just a load of malarky.

That's not a prediction, it's a "wish" from a gonzo fan.

Adam & Eve will send me a catalog, saying that if I don't respond right away, this will be the last one they will ever send me. I always do nothing. Six weeks later, without fail, I've got another catalog.

And if you order something from them, they put you on the express list - you start getting catalogs every 3 weeks, with EXTRA SPECIAL OFFERS for CUSTOMERS LIKE YOU! It's a never-ending cycle.

And what does babby really want? I think he not only wants the Vivids and the Wicked to die off, but maybe he wants those pesky softcore porn customers to die off as well, thus forcing all the porn viewing public worldwide to watch gonzo after gonzo title. That way, RLD will have to produce three, maybe six titles a week, just to keep up with the demand.

From working in a video store, I notice that married guys who have wives who don't approve of porn go for the comp tapes. More scenes per tape (DVD) volume I guess.
The cable and hotel PPV contracts alone keeps Vivid in a strong enough financial position for years to come. Regulatory changes can only affect that by eliminating porn from those markets.
Competitive changes? Consider that for the hotel market what you face. If you offer couples movies you need to undercut Vivid, since you are essentially offering the same product. Moreover, with their "stable", billboard ads in LA, and mainstream crossover (small though it may be) with several of their contract girls, Vivid has some recognition. Even with lower prices, can you point to a study that shows that your movies will generate more sales?
If you offer harder edged movies, then hotel companies are looking at much more complaints, possibly picketing and boycotting. When a family goes on vacation and little Johnny picks up the advertising slick that shows the PPV offers "anal, cum-swallowing, salad tossing gangbangs" the hotel chain is in for a lot of negative publicity. That is where Vivid wins - there advertising is lower key and soft-core slick. If you advertise you movies in the same fashion, you won't pick up the extra sales numbers. Without the extra revenue, you aren't worth the trouble.

Vivid is to porn as Marvel is to comics.

Both companies are generally bad-mouthed by fans of their respecitve media, but both companies are high-profile, attract top talent, and know how to market their product.

Look at Marvel Comics. People who read comics constantly badmouth their product and their business practices, but they're still at the top of their industry.

Lot of companies never die they just cease to produce new content and go into life support mode -- simply licensing their existing content archives for reuse or they sell their complete catalog to other holding or distribution companies which do the same.
For example anybody remember the great adult companies like Caballero (classic Swedish Erotica series) or VCA (lot of 80s film classics). They still exist at least in name only I believe but stopped producing content long time ago. Then you have the smaller mediocre companies like Heatwave which produced lot of black and IR content during 90s but nowadays seemes to just crank out compilations.
Regarding Vivid and Wicked ... those two companies have created such a huge archive of "premium" content that they could just cease production today and survive from just licensing that content for reuse or selling compilations (which they already do). Of course if they stopped producing new content they wouldn't need a big staff anymore. They could get rid of their contract stars, directors, film crew, etc. For example I believe Vivid stopped signing contract girls and their most popular director Paul Thomas has moved on. Wicked is still cranking out new movies though.
