The Sun told yesterday how one in 30 secondary schools is running the Department of Health-backed course, called A Pause. Deidre said: Most parents’ blood runs cold at the thought of their under-16 having oral sex. But we have to be realistic. Just under 30 per cent of under-16s are having penetrative sex, and more than a third of those unprotected. Oral sex isn’t 100 per cent safe, but it is one heck of a lot safer. I hear every day from youngsters wanting to know how to kiss, to give oral sex, how to last longer during intercourse, how to reach orgasm. I do my best to check their age before deciding what information to send. Research shows that full, accurate information doesn’t encourage young people to rush into it. Quite the reverse. They tend to wait longer. Tell anyone about oral sex before they actually want to do it and the reaction is ‘Yuk!’ The information I send youngsters encourages them to explore sexual sharing other than intercourse until they are sure they’re with someone who cares for them deeply. I also spell it out that it is illegal to have sex with a girl under 16. I bet A Pause does much the same. This Government made a commitment to try to halve teenage pregnancies. I’m all for it.
