The correct and full title of the country in which I live is: The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland The nationality of those that live in England, Scotland and Wales is British. Those from Nothern Ireland are simply Northern Irish by nationality. Residents of the Channel Islands, Commonwealth countries and other British protectorates are not British by nationality either. And I even looked it up beforehand to ensure that Wales WAS a part of the United Kingdom so I would be correct in that sense. But here in the U.S. where even our media and education system often uses the terms "England", "Britain", "Great Britain", "British Isles", and "United Kingdom" interchangeably and without distinction, it's inevitable that there is confusion as to what each means for specific countries. Most people are fiercely proud of their country and nationality, (not to mention their ethnicity and religion which is a whole 'nother discussion), while they are often not quite as smitten with the larger regional confederations, politcal organizations, or international subjectivities that they may also be a part of. People from Scotland like to say they are Scots, people from Ireland like to say they are Irish, people from Wales proudly identify themselves as Welsh. (As Isabel has done many times in this forum.) And sometimes folks can be touchy when outsiders don't make the correct distinctions. So please excuse my mistake and accept my apology. I looked it up to get it right, and got it wrong anyway. To me the concepts of Wales, Scotland and England are merely lines on a map mixed up with conceited ideas of national identity. As an island nation all of our heritages are inter-mixed, the idea of England, Scotland and Wales being somehow abstract of each others culture and heritage is absurd. We are a single people united by a common ancestary, that ancestary being a mixture of nearly all the different peoples of Europe. This island was first given the name Britannia by the Romans, this ancient land is Britain and I will forever be British. Nothing says romance like anal sex. [Link] |
