As an extension of another thread in the crossed forum, I was really interested in getting a discussion going on what sites some of you subscribe to now or in the past, what people are doing right, but more importantly what they do wrong. Comments on technical things like streaming vs downloading, multiple choices for quality/file size, scene technical quality, mpg/quicktime vs windows media and other file types, and comments on content like update frequency, quantity vs quality in the number of models used, feelings on set-ups before the action, the reality based themes, and any extras beyond the actual video content that you enjoy or would like to see.

Those are just suggestions for things to comment on, feel free to add to that other points, I just really want to know why and how you choose to spend your money on internet subscription porn, or why you don't.

From what I see, so many sites are just following the herd and just figure if that is the way everyone does it, then that must be the right way. I call bullshit on that, and want to hear what you think.

Thanks,
Joseph

Well, first of all, in my time on the internet, I haven't really seen too many sites that I thought would be worth joining. The ones that I believe are worth it, I've just kind of put it off because my porn habit already costs me quite a bit and I figure I'll get to it eventually.

A site that springs to mind immediately when speaking of high quality and stuff you just don't see very often is Abby Winters Dot Com. I've never been a member there but if I were trying to decide on a site to join for a couple of months, it would either be that one or ATK.

A big part of enticing people to join is quality samples. If your samples aren't full quality, make sure that you inform the viewer in some way *exactly* what your full quality content is like. If I see a small, grainy low resolution sample photo or video clip, the only thing that site stands out in my mind for is that their content must be junk and I would never join their site.

If you do high quality work and demonstrate that to potential members, memberships should pretty much sell themselves.

I think you have a good point. Don't follow the crowd. There are so many sites out there that are just like every other site that they don't stand out in any significant way. It's a very crowded market and if your stuff appears to be just like everyone else's or (perish the thought) worse in quality, people just won't bother....no matter how cheap your memberships are. You may get some takers but if they don't like your stuff or don't think it's worth it, they'll cancel the first chance they get.

One thing that DID bother me when I joined a site or two is that when I signed up, I checked the box for a one month membership that wouldn't recur but, nevertheless, they continued to bill me. Make sure you don't dick your customers around like that. If they only want one month, don't try and hassle them about it.

Another thing regarding billing, I wouldn't charge people extra for "premium" content. I would charge one price for complete access. If I'm thinking of joining a site and I see that the premium content costs more, I don't even consider it any further.

Lots of things can cause people who are considering joining your site to turn away. You should consider that and think about it as though you were them. For example, if a particular detail of the membership would put you off, it'll probably put off a lot of potential customers as well.

As I said before - try to be unique and original and offer content that can't be had on every other adult site known to mankind. Don't be gimmicky though. Fads come and go quickly. It might be popular today and completely forgotten next year.

Movies - well...just make sure they're of high quality. A lot of people don't have the fastest broadband connections so it takes a little while to download a clip or a movie. If they invest the time and the movie stinks, they're gonna be a little upset. Find a way to provide a good overview (preview clip) of the movie before they download it so they know if they really want it or not. Don't just show the best moments. Make sure the preview truly represents the movie and doesn't lead them to believe it's better than it actually is.

Photo sets - I've seen so many photo sets from some pretty popular web sites that are just...well, junk (I won't name any names). Often, the lighting is very poor...to the extent that it makes skin tones (and everything else) look sickly, muddy and pretty shabby. overall. The most beautiful, sexy woman in the world can't compensate for bad lighting, poor equipment and bad form.

I've also seen countless photo sets where the photographer obviously just set his camera to take rapid-fire chains of photos (often, apparently without the aid of a flash) and just captured every move the model made. Thus, you'll see a set that has 120 photos in it and maybe only 10 that are really good. Screen your photos carefully. Quality over quantity. How many people really want to see the model caught in mid-step in an awkward looking position, strange expression on her face, looking like she's about to fall over......with bad, dingy color to boot? Just trash the bad stuff and keep the good. And get a good photographer and model in the first place that way you don't have to trash as much bad stuff.

Your heart should be in whatever you're selling. You should enjoy doing it. Don't bother with content that you wouldn't be into yourself. A lot of people make fetish-oriented stuff and don't have the first clue what the fetish is really about. Don't just go for shock value. That wears off. It's just profit to them. I'm sure you can make a profit selling junk if that's what you're inclined to do but what people really want is a site that really "gets it" and does whatever it is right. That's what is largely missing in a lot of adult content (certainly not all but quite a bit of it). Inspiration, originality, quality and people who obviously care about the finished product.

I agree that preview videos are a great idea. It's also good to have different qualities of video, so people can choose between a quicker download and less hard drive space or a better quality video. I appreciate .zip files of photos. Blooper photos and videos are always okay, but they should be labeled as bloopers. I prefer to see a photo shoot and video uploaded to the server in a relatively short period of time, that is if you break a scene up into several parts don't wait several weeks after posting part one to post part two while you post other unrelated sets and scenes in the interim. Make it easy for someone who has cancelled to get caught up on what they missed should they rejoin. If you want to discourage people from cancelling and rejoining later, you can make the first month of a recurring subscription more expensive than subsequent months. A forum attached to the website where members can correspond with the talent and crew is a good idea. People like to be able to say what they liked or didn't like about a particular scene, and pitch their own suggestions.

Guys, thanks so much for taking the time to write those detailed replies. I think you are hitting it on the head, or actually, I am hitting it on the head with some of the ideas we have for our sites that I think people will dig, and your incite is invaluable.

If anyone else has any comments or suggestions, please feel free to chime in!

I'm not sure that your idea for retaining customers will work, at least not for a company that isn't well established as having unique content that is frequently updated. Unless you've got your market cornered, having a higher entrance fee than your competitor just sends folks to your competitor.

The best way to discourage people from cancelling and rejoining is to make it worthwhile for them to stay each month. It seems to me that this is easiest for fetish sites that cater to a very specific audience. Generalists are far more likely to have people wandering in and out.

I was thinking of how both the 21Sextury sites and ALS Scan charge $30 the first month and $25 for subsequent months. But if someone does cancel for some reason but comes back later, I like a calendar of updates, so that they can just go to the last day their old subscription worked and get caught up from there.

See, this falls into the category of what I was saying about not making the membership a hassle for the customers. Customers are VERY picky and easily upset. $30 a month is a lot of money to some people. Even if something would seem to make good business sense, it makes more sense in the long run to make the experience (including billing) as pleasant and hassle-free as humanly possible. As you say, people might cancel and come back later. Maybe they need the money that they would otherwise spend on their subscription for a couple of months.

Like HArdware said, the best way to keep people from canceling is frequent updates of quality stuff that people don't want to miss and can't wait to see. If updates are sluggish and infrequent and the quality isn't that great to begin with, people will cancel in droves.

Uh... if I join for a month, cancel and repeat every other month, that = $30 x 6.
Joining and paying for a year = 30 + (25 x 11).

Obviously, the scheme you outline only discourages butterflies who are bad at math.

Keep some small files for dial-up users. Mix it up with casting, use some floriduh girls, some LA girls, some euro content mixed in.

Briefly:

I've joined a few good sites over the years and one thing is true. It's true in ALL media industries: Mainstream films, TV, music, you name it. Content is king. Compelling content is far and away THE MOST important thing.

Now if you have killer content and want other suggestions, I only have minor ones to offer:

1. One of my favorite and longest subscribed sites is amateurallure.com. He does two things very right: He makes every model look her best. Many of them look amazing, mainly due to good makeup, excellent lighting, great quality equipment, and of course technique. He also gets enormous points for the quality of the photos and videos he produces. BIG jpegs and pretty darned high bit rate Quicktime movies that look nice and sharp. All of his stuff is high quality. He gets a -2 from me on his technical execution in the Quicktime world though. I don't know why, but trying to fast forward, or more accurately, to "click forward" in the timeline takes FOREVER. It literally takes almost 2 minutes to click forward to a location 2 minutes forward of where you are. It's a technical thing probably. Something about the encoding technique, or flags he sets on the videos. It's annoying as hell.

2. Don't try to hide your content behind a bunch of tiny pages in an effort to make mass downloading difficult. AA does this *some* (but not much). Another site I joined (party hardcore) did this a lot and it was irritating. Savy porn consumers use download managers, and frankly want all the content they can get. If you run an adult site, you know the cost of bandwidth and factor it into your business model. Trying to hide the content so it's hard to get "all at once" just irritates savy consumers (which I'd like to think that I am). The other side of this is trying to keep customers by limiting their exposure to your content. Other posters have commented on keeping the site fresh, which solves that particular concern. It's the reason I stayed subscribed to AA for SO long. The content was that good.

3. I always like to make at least three points, and I really only had two, so this is stretching it a bit. :) Please induldge me. I would like to transfer more of my Internet based porn to my regular TV display. Any site that makes that easy on purpose, by either distributing "ready to burn" media, or at least media that is 72 hex 480 (making no size conversion necessary) would get at least +1 from me.

Looking forward to good things from TunaCan...

There are a couple of keys for me,

First of all to join a site there has to be preview videos
and a clear description of what is on the site.

2 It has to feature a subject I am interested in. General
male female, or female female just doesn't interest me
since I can get that anywhere, my favorite sites are the sexual wrestling site and the hard core strip club sites, stuff you can't get anywhere else.

To stay subscribed to a site, it should have something new to see two times a week.

The site has to have a quality standard the main thing that makes me cancel a site after giving it multiple months
is one week of good updates, then 3 weeks of crap, sites like that make me join download everything I want to see, ten rejoin for another month 6 months later

ok a few quick things for me to sign up is content and lots of diffnert girls. nothing more boring even if your a fan of a girl but 30 dollars a month gets old if it is the same old stuff. so i am honest i have enjoyed a few of the sites at Kink.com the Ultimate surrender is really something diffenrt and unique i enjoy it updates every week with a match with 2 new girls. sometimes they throw a bonus match in there. whipped ass is another i have enjoyed they update every week and it can be some great submission video content with some of the best girls in the indusrty. i think the next couple i am looking at is wiredpussy or fuckingmachines. both again update everyweek and have top shelf talent and some talent you see no where else.. i have had some subscriptions to sites dedicated to one star i feel it is real hard to pull off. i have to say Belladonna has done a great job of trying to bring what the fans want. her and Aiden or it is Aiden only who bust his ass on working on content for that site and to no credit he gets bashed sometimes because he is busy doing movies also. the updates get spread out its a no win situation fo rsome of the sites others i feel dont care they get there money and dont update

if a site is good i will sign up for a 6 month deal if it is availble and i hate the whole recurring subscription i like the ones you pay once and when the times up its up .

well hope any of my info helps

I want unique content I can't find on DVD. I'll sign up for a month or two, and download as much as I can, though there is not much incentive to stay past that because most sites or site-clusters don't offer enough new content every month. I've done Meatmembers, Porn Addict, Facial Abuse, Sex and Submission, SlaveKas, and some of the Montreal sites, also some German stuff ... and Anabolic back in the day.

I have been a member on some five pay sites at various times, usually for a few months at a time. These sites have mostly been solo and lesbian stuff, because these are severely lacking in the DVD market. I tend to do a fair bit of research on the porn review sites before I consider joining a site.

Joining paysites has very much cut down on my spending on porn DVDs, so it probably is cheaper and more convenient on the whole.

I like to have a good idea of the contents before joining. Some sites let everyone see their update calendar and model list, which I think is an honest practice.

I won't go near a site which uses DRM, and the downloads should be decent quality (something like >1500 kbps for wmv/avi/mov, this can be viewed fullscreen without wincing). Scenes should be downloadable in one piece - I decided against one site because I read this option was not available. Clips can be joined with certain tools, but this should not be the customer's job.

Some sites have discussion forums for members and models to chat, which sounds nice in principle, but sometimes they aren't very lively.

Basically, what I want is well made, targeted content, regular updates, ease of navigation and use, genuine passion, no nonsense attitude. (I don't want the supposedly funny/rough scene descriptions I see sometimes, e.g. on a certain big and very popular video download site.)

I think the Internet porn customer is very fluid. I know I am, the trick is to get me to come back. I have a monthly porn budget that I spend on porn and will not go over it.
Preview pages
1 trailers just the last 2 or 3 update (full size quality trailers)
2 show all the girls on the site (I have joined a site for just one girl)
3 put dates on your updates (show me you really do update every week) and to me pictures is not an update

Way’s to get me to come again and a again
1 Tell the guy behind the camera to SHUT THE FUCK UP he’s not the star
2 Use your imagination quit relying on the “new girl” to carry your site. There are girls we like to see again and again. Use your imagination and explore sex with your ladies
Examples of imagination
I don’t like Max Hardcore his stuff is way over the top for me.
Thing’s he does right is the way his girls are dressed, short skirt and no panties. He starts with the pussy. I’m so tired of show me your tits, show me your ass, pull down your panties, suck his dick porn.
Use seduction and tease
Short skirts and no panties (flash me early and often)
Strippers and lap dances (give me a strip show a lap dance where he got his cock out playing with it, she’s playing with in he’s playing with her. They tease each other then fuck)
Goes the gap, start groping, and show some pussy early in the scene.

I doubt that will be read and certainly it won’t be put into practice but damn it felt good getting it off my chest.

Well I can see that the guy behind the camera may need to be involved. But talk about sex. Have her sit on the guys lap He should be a handsy guy, those hands should be working. That’s one of things Max does right he’ll be finger fucking her while he’s talking to her.She doesn’t need panties. Let him pull his dick out while your talking to her. She can talk to you and pull on his dick at the same time. Get some sexual tension going between them while your talking. The guys dick should be like third person in the room.

You there to fuck her get on that topic and stay there.

But thanks Duke your cool guy to read my post and respond.

Lol I got from my old lady ……..she told when “your dick gets hard it’s like having a third person in bed, it won’t let either one us get any sleep” lol

You habve some good points, but IMHO the way Max Hardcore dresses his girls up is one of his weakest points. He makes even the loveliest girls look awful with those stupid shoes and socks, strange hairdos, ugly make-up and too-bright colors.

Eduardo I didn’t make myself clear on that point, I was trying save words to keep my post from rambling on to long.

No one else would dress the girl like Max. He has a lot more money to invest in wardrobe. You can’t expect an Internet producer in spend money on wardrobe they have to make money. And as you pointed out he has horrible taste.

What I was referring to was the short skirts with out panties mostly. These girls have their own wardrobe they will furnish with in reason. We already have scenes with short skirts just start the scene without the panties. Give us some flashing and up skirt. Have her with her feet on the couch showing her pussy. Pussy is why we sign up, show it to us early and often.

Hey Tunacan,

I have no idea how well it converts, but 1byday is one of the best sites IMHO, if not the best. They update every day, have full hi-quality photo three-to-five page lay-outs of each scene, .zip downloads for photos of same said scene, choice of low-quality as well as HD download (for most scenes), and that sites never fails to max out my connection (about 460 kBs to 484 kbs, which isn't that bad considering most of the HD stuff is about a Gig per scene).

I find the lay-out perfect (search by month or by model), the speed unGodly (how fast are the connections across the pond?), and easiness of use on par. Ever been into Rodney Moore's site? Good God, the last time I was in there the site was just ugly and I was utterly confused on how to get what I wanted (which you could chalk up to the surfers are stoopid to "when you're jacking off, you're not in the right frame of mind" so keep it as easy as possible :)).

I understand why going with DRM makes sense from a business standpoint, but it can turn of many potential monthly subscribers. One way around that might be to do what the adult.com sites do (offer DRM .wmv files about 25mb-50mb in length, which are about 1/3 of the scene each, as well as 3mb-5mb .mpg files that are about 1/30 of the scene, but not DRM encypted).

I have no idea what your niche is, but 1byday, the Bangros sites, as well as the Cumfiesta's and Meatmember's clusters of sites are, for me, what brings the credit card out of my wallet. Basically, those sites provide me with what I want as fast as possible and are easy to use.

Best,

Kierkegaard

P.S. Best of luck, for what I understand this isn't the "wild wild west" days of the mid-to-late-90s, but if you can find a decent niche (which is more than possible) you'll do well.

P.P.S. Just advice, I'd stay away from the she's 18, but we have toys 8-to-14 year-olds play with by the bed "stuff." It will make you more money probably, but it will be headaches down the line (e.g.'s Galitsin news, Teenfuns, Met-Art, honestly, almost anything Russian). It's something akin to profanity in films...it's a crutch and I believe there are ways to be more creative/effective in turning the viewer on then that stuff. For example, the SO really digs the dike porn. I haven't received the "dick now" pull of her arms as much as watching some of the 21st Century titles. Good luck.

My only suggestion would be to try and get reviewed by pornliving.com and/or other adult site review sites. I have joined several sites after seeing their reviews.

Also, what does DRM stand for? Never mind, I just googled it. So, does anybody know if that is what Danni Ashe's site uses? You can't burn her files to disk, and when you watch them, you have to type in your username and password before it will play.

I don't know but that's BS if it's true. You should at least be able to burn them if you want and who the fuck remembers a password from a web site they joined several years ago? Don't people have enough passwords to keep up with. A big thumbs down to that horse shit if they're gonna start doing that.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when a site tries to be one thing to everybody. Claiming you have something for everyone is shit. I can get that anywhere. I always sign up for specialty sites. If I go to a bj site I want bj videos, if I sign up for a site where midgets fuck donkeys I want a nothing but videos of midgets fucking donkeys. I've seen too many sites sucker you into signing up and then giving you a scrape of what they sold their site on and give you tons of mixed generic scenes which they label as bonus material. I also am turned off to any sites which offer you to sign up for some sort of porn pass where you get access to 130 plus sites. When I see this I assume the site is shit and they're going to give you just enough content to fill their minimum requirements to be part of the unit. Usually this consists of a dozen or so generic videos. I love sites that tell you all their content. throatjobs.com lists all of their girls on an easy to see thumbnail site available to non-members. Nothing annoys me more than signing up for a site and feeling ripped off. Every six months I sign up for a month and raid the new content. I won't keep a membership around because on average most sites only change the content once a week and it isn't worth $30 bucks monthly for 4 scenes. I hate sites where you have to download a ton of 30 second or less clips. If you want to offer full scenes, parts, and small clips I'd have no issue. But I have having to download 30 clips for one scene.

Most importantly though I'm always looking for something different which most sites are not. UltimateSubmission.com is a good example. The loser gets fucked with a strap on. It makes the sex more interesting and it stands out from the ton of other sites out there. I like weird and I'm always looking for something different.

The only site I ever subscribed to was realspankings.com. Obviously, a spanking site.
They delivered what they advertised, they made it possible to keep clips, and updated frequently.

I imagine other specialty sites are good, too.
