I currently have a porn collection of approximately 130 titles. I'm sure this is a modest number compared with some, but with regard to about 115 of those, they are titles that I have reviewed on ADT over the last five years or so.
I have recently been thinking of selling off my collection. It makes rational sense as I hardly ever look back at my older titles and I suppose they are a depreciating asset.
I'm having difficulty letting go however, as I kind of have an emotional attachment to the films. I suppose it's all the effort I've put into the reviews rather than 'consuming' them in the normal way. I also see the collection as a kind of history of gonzo over the last five years.
Is this an unhealthy attachment and I should just sell up or is this kind of feeling shared by other people?

At some point you'd regret selling it, I think. At least I would.
Knowing you can re-watch it if and when you want to is nice. Yes, I'm a hamster ;-)

Why get rid of it? Have you lost all interest in watching porn or is it a temporary loss of interest which you will regret if you dump it? I've run into guy friends who have manipulative girlfriends, soon to be married and their women force them to get rid of it and they just offer me to take it. Sounds like someone is pressuring you.
In 2003 I took my entire VHS collection which over the years I had in several very large boxes and burned them all onto DVDs. I trashed all the VHS tapes. I don't keep any porn on my computer. I edited the scenes I put onto DVD (most re-writable +RW format) to condense it yet managed to take hundreds of titles and put it all onto one large empty spindle, and don't have any box covers, sleeves or cases. It is easy to get to any DVD quickly as long as you bunch them in some order and label it accurately. Just to note, if you choose to burn stuff to DVD most DVD recorders have copyright devices prohibiting you from recording from one DVD to another or from VHS to DVD. You will have to invest in a item that will override this. Just keep all the DVDs and stack them onto a large spindle and chuck all the boxes. You can always store it away easily as it takes up little space.

My collection spans 22 years (since I was legally able enter an adult video store in Canada at the tender age of 21 years). During the 22 years, I must have spend thousands upon thousands of hard-earned money and thousands upon thousands of hours reading reviews on pornstars and movie titles, that is my collection today.
My family and close friends know of my collection and they are all totally amazed at the shear volume of titles I have. At this point in time, I have no idea how many titles I own from VHS tapes to CD-Roms to DVD dics.
Unhealthy as some would put, this is my hobby! Collecting porn titles is my hobby, which is based on the ladies I like!
So, to answer your question, I would never sell my collection.
Actually, I was thinking of creating a Porn HOF in Toronto (right next to the Hockey HOF) where I can donate my collection once the Good Lord decides that it's time for me to go!

Don't sell it. You will regret it! Got rid of all my VHS when DVD was the thang. Now I am kicking myself in the ass because there are a more than a handful of titles and scenes that I can not find anywhere and wish I still had!

I go through and throw out something I know I'll never watch again. I've got a bunch of stuff from awhile back, and now either my taste has changed or I've found things that are a lot better, and there's no reason to watch the junk anymore. So out it goes.
I do keep some stuff that I like for whatever reason, and every so often I go back and look at it again. But I'm good about figuring out what I may want to see again someday.

I hardly rewatch any porn I have. I tend to sample new stuff regularly.
I'd be comfortable selling all my porn and just keeping a few DVDs or burned DVDs of stuff that I'm fond off and took a bit of effort to get my hands on (like early movies with Danni Ashe in them, or such).

With a good stiffie ,i have got to admit i love my porn collection, having a mix of all the genres makes watching porn a great experience all the time..one minute you are on the bus coming home from work and a hot office/secretary style girl gets on the bus,two seconds later your pants are like a wig-wam and as i make it through the front door(had to turn sideways)im looking out some hot office type porn then the thrashing of all thrashings takes place.

There are definitely movies that I love and want to hold onto. I do feel an emotional attachment to them so I can understand. They are my favorite adult titles. I wish my collection was only made up of those, but there are movies that aren't so great that I wouldn't think twice about selling.

My porn collection is over 600 titles now - all of which are burned to external hard drives. It makes watching stuff easier as you dont have to go through boxes and DVDs you can just sort and play. I like watching old stuff as its good to see performers in their early days or rare first time scenes. I also enjoy collecting porn though so will always be looking for new stuff too, but I would never get rid of anything - even the original DVDs I keep (it would be illegal to sell them).

You are doing exactly what eventually I plan to do. DVDs are a pain having to constantly load, unload them and search for stuff. I have the external hard drive ready to go which I will use only for porn so to keep it off my main computer but my operating system is so old I can't hook up an external DVD player to it. Need to get a new computer soon. Also, while VHS tapes have a shelf life of about 15 years, DVDs shelf life while better is not all that great either. Most DVDs from the 80s and 90s show a lot of picture wear. I think the quality will last longer on a hard drive.

Actually his quote is correct, it is illegal if you made copies of material. If you purchased it in original form then it is not illegal to sell it. My porn are scenes only which have been edited. I only am interested in the hardcore, not plots, people yapping or trying to act. I gather that is similar to what he does. Copying the scenes for my viewing only is one thing, selling it can get one prosecuted if it falls into the wrong hands.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they didn't make dvds in the 80's. I didn't see them being sold until around 1998.

No, you are right, thanks for pointing that out. I did not make my point clear. I was referring to titles originally released from the 80s and 90s that were put onto DVD by studios and I have noticed their deterioration from when they WERE released on DVD to now.
Even my DVD from the 1975 classic "Jaws" is terrible compared to its original release on DVD. Not long ago I heard a DVD can last up to 80 years but not so for the most part. They deteriorate quite fast.

I'm not sure a hard drive will fare any better. Maybe the video quality would be, but file corruption would still be an issue. And I'm not convinced you aren't still seeing the VHS degradation, just transferred to DVD, afterward, with time and an inferior starting point making everything look bad.
As for the topic at hand, I'm a pack rat. Some titles WILL get a revisit, and some won't even if I liked them. Maybe not a sentimental attachment, more like an OCD need to not get rid of something I might need again. And yes, I'm one of those guys with old receipts and old CD-Rs with all my college homework...a file cabinet with 12 year old pay stubs from a part-time mall job...

@Nebulous:
DVD picture quality doesn't fade over time. There is a documented phenomenon known as "disc rot" which is a deterioration of disc itself. But that will cause flaky playing of the disc, stopping unexpectedly or DVD player can't read the disc or other glitchy playing (or not playing) behavior. But the picture quality always stays the same as when the disc was first pressed or burned. If you have graduated to the world of HDTV and Blu-Ray, then that might explain why your old-school DVD's don't look so fabulous any more.

I do not know whether a hard drive would yield better results compared to storing content on DVDs. I don't think file corruption would be an issue either. A lot of the corruption of files is files being used in conjunction with other files that causes a conflict and creates a problem. If vids are stored on an external hard drive this may reduce this issue, I'm not sure, perhaps someone with experience with this could provide some feedback.
I can say without any doubt that I purchased new DVDs, from the manufacturer and they have degraded significantly from when originally released. You too will if you purchased DVDs from 10 years ago, very soon.

I don't understand your points, maybe I am wrong but I read over your post repeatedly and still do not understand it. You say DVD picture does not fade over time yet that is what I literally see when I view a DVD years later. If the DVD "ITSELF" is deteriorating then that is a DIRECT cause for the fading of the picture. The picture one views and the DVD "ROTTING" physical state are not separate entities. They work in conjunction and if one is not performing the other will not perform. It is like a link of chains, you are only as strong as your weakest link.
I discovered that when Discs freeze while playing, not always, but more often, you can fix this problem by taking a wet cotton cloth and rubbing the bottom of the disc vigorously to clean it. After drying it the disc will often not freeze and will play properly.
I don't understand the difference you refer to the picture quality one views to the deterioration of a disc over time. To me they are the same.

If you truly believe the picture is fading, and if you are convinced there is no other possible cause of the fading (other than the disc), then i have nothing more to say.

Relationship? Lol that's funny. Anyway, I simply back them up on a dvd and put the original away in a box in perfect condition. I keep all my back-ups in a big 500 cd wallet which saves alot of space and doesn't draw attention. If people ask me what all those cds are I just say its my classical music collection and that turns 99% of them off (I play alot of cello). :) Alot of my dvds are Evil Angel which are typically red and tend to draw attention. :)

I have often wanted to make copies of my favorite scenes for ease of access. Too hard to keep finding which book box in the garage when I want to watch something from days gone by.
1. I just upgraded to a new laptop, so what software would be good to purchase to copy individual scenes to a DVR
2. I thought it was legal to be able to make backups of something you have already purchased. I don't download porn from tube clips, I buy all my porn legit, I just want to make some homemade disks of the "greatest hits" for ease of access. I don';t have any plans to trade or distribute to anybody

No you don't. You might think or feel like the DVD image isn't as high quality and you might even be watching it on a crappier TV set that doesn't display the colors as brightly or images as clearly but that has nothing to do with the DVD.
A DVD is not an analog video source. The DVD holds a specific and immutable set of digital values on it that correspond to the image you see. Unlike a cassette tape or a VHS tape the image cannot become lighter, distorted, or change in anyway other than to cease to exist. Let me put this in another context. In the US we used to get analog TV broadcasts. You could get a shitty signal. You could have snow, fuzz, bad audio, or just *barely* be able to see the image. That doesn't exist anymore with digital TV broadcasting. Either you get the signal strong enough to get the image clearly or you don't get it at all. That's how digital works. It isn't a spectrum of something ranging from "sorta ok" to "excellent" it's a light switch that is either on or off.
If you can play a DVD and it doesn't skip, stop, or glitch out... you're seeing the EXACT same bits and bytes of data you saw 10 years ago.

Ok, I believe you that I am seeing the exact same bits and bytes of data. I also know the picture sharpness is faded and fuzzy. This has absolutely nothing to do with my television or DVD players. I put scenes from VHS tapes dating back to the late 80s onto DVD in year 2003 and the picture was excellent and remained that way for several years. In just the past 2 years these DVDs are not much fun to watch because the picture is shitty with colors faded, dark images and very blurry. Maybe if I clean them that will help. Not sure why such a change over a short time.
Just to add, I had recorded onto DVD at the 4 hour speed. I now record nothing longer than the SP (2 hour speed)to help preserve the picture. I think the speed used to record the videos has a lot to do with how long the quality will last.

What I (and now TheCuriousDizzle) was trying to say is: Those 2 things (exact same data AND faded/fuzzy picture) cannot both be true at the same time. UNLESS something else is going on. Aging of the disc cannot cause faded/fuzzy picture. There must be some other cause of your faded/fuzzy picture. Or your perception/recollection is faulty.

If I have a "relationship" with my porn collection, and I delete or throw away a scene, can I be charged with murder? What if I watch a non-porn scene from my mainstream collection...is that cheating?

Have you considered that things just look different because technology has advanced? I can't even watch VHS anymore, it's total shit. The quality of VHS is so bad, even top quality vidoes that were beautiful at the time they were shot are absolute garbage on a big screen that can display 1080 resolution. Even with DVD to HDTV.... The Matrix for example looked great when I saw it back in the day on DVD... but since I've seen it in 1080, the DVD looks like soft, undetailed, ass.

I know the VHS tapes for the most part rapidly deteriorate after roughly 15 years. When new, their picture quality is equally as sharp as a DVD on a standard TV (not HD of course). I doubt anyone even bothers to produce VHS, so most have exceeded their shelf life and look like crap. I'm convinced now that my main problem which I touched on is not recording onto DVD at the higher quality speeds. The speeds are 1,2,4 and 6 hours, and I should have used the 1 or 2 hour recording formats. I had packed too many scenes onto each DVD.

I have 10 year old DVDs that look fine. Buy a new, or rent, a brand new copy of a movie you own, and tell me if it looks different when you watch one after the other.
As for the hard drive, no. Your reason is not the only thing that causes file errors. Everything from movement, to dust, to time can ruin files on a hard drive. Sure, there will be no noticeable video quality degradation like on VHS, but look forward to plenty of glitches and crashes later on. Hard drives are hardly perfect for storage.
I'm not sure a hard drive will fare any better. Maybe the video quality would be, but file corruption would still be an issue. And I'm not convinced you aren't still seeing the VHS degradation, just transferred to DVD, afterward, with time and an inferior starting point making everything look bad.

add another aye to the ayes of those who will never throw out my stash (collection, or 'black' lock n' key duffel bag if you will..)..
now maybe this is just me having issues with censorship and 'obscenity' witch hunts..
but since my old school VHS collection got raided by 'concerned' family members , replaced and re-replaced [o\|] with back-up dvds of all the old school favorites, and the advent of picking scenes to own with video on demand..
i stand firm (..in my pants) in my resolve to say that society here in the 'bible belt' will take my adult movies and ''novelty' massager's' away from me when..
..they pry them ..from ..my ..cold ...dead ...right ..HAND!!!!

I wonder if a moderator could split these posts out into a separate thread on VHS versus DVD versus hard drive.

i used to periodically go through and cull the titles and sell the ones i didnt watch on ebay, just to keep the totals down. then my wife left and i thought i would off myself, so i donated them to a video store so they would not die in vain in a dumpster somewhere....they will live on even if i am gone!

Remember too that if you have a regular old DVD player on a new Digital TV, the DVD's will look shitty. Let alone VHS on digital TV's. If your DVD player corrects for HD that should make a difference.
Anyway my "collection" has been migrating to Flash drives. Then If I want a scene on a DVD I will move it. My "collection" is very stelth. I cant have 1 let alone 600 titles out on display. So the smaller the better.

Thanks for all your contributions to this thread guys, although it seems to have gone off on somewhat of a tangent.
I've decided not to sell my collection. I don't need the money and I've decided to 'reconnect' with my older titles by revisiting a classic scene perhaps once every week or so from my collection.
First up tonight is Julia Bond from Ass Worship X.
