I wanted it for the interview with Corey Parks of Nashville Pussy who talks about fisting a fan. But what a waste. What promised to be 2 hours was actually only 56 minutes and had only two sex scenes. Of course, I figure that the starlets pictured in the opening should somewhere be on the disk, but damned if my deck will play it. So back to DVD Advantage it goes. I'm finding this more and more. Whether it be no sound on Private DVDS, Elegant Angels "Kung Fu" movie syncro problems, disks that just won't play and other assorted fuckups. It makes me wonder if these porn companies are just as fucked up when it comes to quality control issues on DVD as they are with video tape. I'm definitely scaling back my purchases and avoiding known companies who obviously don't watch what they're relasing one time before pressing DVD release runs. [Link] |

I recently solved the problems I was experiencing by purchasing a more expensive DVD player, but I feel this should not be necessary. It was getting to the point where about 20% of the titles I was buying would not work properly. Since I often acquired them through eBay, this wasn't working out. The Sanyo DVD player ($164 at Walmart) played every mainstream release I through at it flawlessly (except for a minor problem involving bright flashes in a scene). Earlier in the week I purchased a Sony 560 for $285. It plays the same adult discs fine that Sanyo has trouble with. I haven't had it very long. It is possible it will have its own set of problems. I got my fingers crossed, this is a highly rated model by consumers on the Internet. It would be great if you could cc me a email when you (or others) post messages like this one with disc problems. That way I can add these reports to my Problem DVD List. The page has the attention of adult producers. Ultimately, I think porn producers need to produce discs that are going to play in everyone's player. There are a ton of cheaper players being sold out there by Sanyo, GE, Samsung etc. -- and I think it is reasonable to expect that adult discs will be compatible with them. If they can handle mainstream movies, they should be able to handle porn - which is much more basic. Snowman [Link] |

The frustration, as we see with the example listed, is the complete lack of quality control at some 2nd or 3rd tier studios. Either they do not have the proper equipment or just don't check them. (The Private DVD mentioned needs to have the sound moved to another channel, by the way)I had the same problem on a"Hardbound" run. There are also many new "authors" buying encoding systems who have no experience in multimedia. Many studios have had to learn as you they go (me included), you can alway's ask who is doing the replicating, most is done in Taiwan, VCA and now Adam & Eve (thanks to VCA!) use Infodisk- they have corrrected all our little issues, There is a reason why the VCA product demands a premium, that is why we are taking their advise to heart. It's not like I'm using a cheap or ancient model. I don't have a dvdrom. My rule of thumb is now. If their videos are shit, you can bet that the DVDs will be too. Which mean no Zane, Sunshine or Leisure Slime for me. And I've also quit buying Elegant Angel b/c it seems like every disk of theirs I own has sound synch problems. Don't any of these companies do test pressings and see the product they plan on marketing to the public? [Link] |

Since then, we are also reviewing the disc on a cheaper Panasonic, and my replicators look at it on a Toshiba (5109, I think). Even still, I am sure we will have problems. Mainstream companies can't afford to have mistakes on their DVDs. Adult companies can't afford to fix every mistake... until they find a feasible solution. I know that many of the companies are doing their best within their means. Evil Angel has incredibly high quality standards, but we have had to rely on some people who assured us they knew what they were doing, and of course they didn't. It's a slow learning process. My humble advice... read reviews of DVDs on the different sites. Eventually, problems associated with companies will hopefully be corrected, and you will be able to learn that without gambling away all your money. Good luck. Tricia Evil Angel DVD [Link] |

While we at VCA do everything we can to author DVDs to spec and test as thouroughly as possible, there are always exceptions on players, and especially ROM drives. Did you know that there is some DVD-ROM software that cannot read SP layers (the highlights you use to navigate a menu). We learned early-on to design for "blind" mouse navigation. Other examples are the APEX set-top player, which is really a DVD-ROM drive in disguise (they even include a disclaimer about not being able to handle multiple branching). Toshiba is notorious for incompatibility, even among the manufacturers of DVD authoring systems (a 1998 model is ancient, by the way - that was two generations ago). Given the state of the DVD player market, it will continue to be problomatic for content providers to program for the medium. It is, also, unfair to expect content providers to program for the oldest, cheapest and weakest players on the market. That is like asking software companies to only produce software for 486 computers running windows 3.1. As has been sugested, all that we can do as consumers, is read reviews of content and EQUIPMENT. As a content provider, we remain concious of player limitations, and continue the struggle to design interesting discs withing limitations. It is my hope that a standard for playback devices is set and player manufacturers be made to list the components,speed and memory in their units, like all other computer manufacturers do. | Saki At-Large 2087 Posts 11/99 | Posted - Aug 7 2000 : 6:17PM While it's an impossibility to test for compatability on every brand, model, and year of DVD players, the availability of cheap players, even name brand ones, cannot be ignored. Companies like Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sony are all cutting corners to release cheap players that will be bought by the thousands. It's one thing to say that you can't program to a second generation player, but another to not be able to play a disc on a brand new, 2000 model from a midrange brand. I don't blame consumers for being bitter and trying to assign blame. In a perfect world, we'd be able to see what the cause of these problems are and who is to blame (the author or the player manufacturer). Also in a perfect world, that blame would result in some action (such as a recall, refund, or repair). But I know from first hand experience that the perfect world doesn't exist, and it definitely is further away from reality in adult DVD. It has to come to heads sometime...consumers aren't going to get a real warm fuzzy feeling when they aren't 100% sure that, like VHS or CD, that the software they purchase will play reliably, every time. And they aren't going to tolerate companies who don't correct defects in their products. And not many are willing to do what I have to do to play my adult collection: Buy two (or more) DVD players from different manufacturers. Where it gets dicey is how the Audlt Industry is leading all other content providers (and where the Matrix ran into trouble) producing interactive content. We have a dual stategy, here, to address that. Test as thoroughly and widely as possible for interactive content, but provide enogh linear material to accomodate player issues. What is a tremendous help is feedback from places like this forum. It is important to hear back from consumers about what is or isn't working and where the issues lie. I don't think any company intentionally releases product that doesn't work. I only hope the Adult Industry can maintain the consumer's trust as we break new ground and try to create new content and deliver it in different ways that this brand new medium allows. enjoy, WIT [Link] |
