Why does it shows up as:
is an invalid domain name.
Minimum length error
But sites like Barnes and Noble BN.com and Dorling Kindersley DK.com can get away with it??

I think all 2 letter domain names have been taken already. The only rule I know is the maximum length, 63 characters.

I vaguely recall that this rule was put into place by Jon Postel (RIP) back in the mid 1980's. I don't remember why but all of the RFCs from that era are still available so it's there somewhere.
Top-level domains can be two-letter of course since country TLDs supposed to follow the standard UN list of two-character abbreviations (even though they don't - i.e., .uk instead of the UN-approved .gb).

UK is the ISO standard (and toplevel cc), not GB, it is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland after all.

The UN code in gb. Do the cars have a UK or GB sticker when driving around the mainland? I thought I remembered GB.

Many symbols aren't allowed in domain names, either. My advice is to play around with what you think might be catchy and keep the name as short as possible.
