Richard Pryor made it hip to say the word in public in the 70's. Everybody heard that and laughed. But what they didn't seem to hear was when he denounced the word after going to Africa. Pryor said, " I was wrong. I will never call another black man a nigger as long as I live." Paul Mooney, just last year, said he would never use it again. The word was "buried" in Detroit last spring. Educated people heard what Richard said. The ignorant...well...they remained ignorant with an attitude. You don't hear Italians calling themselves, WOP. You don't hear Chinese people calling themselves, Chink. You don't hear Germans calling themselves Kraut. And so on. Black people have a unique history. The only people who had to TAKE disrespect.
