Could this nuisance law actually have a benefit? I say yes, and here's why.

Porn has been utterly flooded with a glut and then some of product. The end result has been an endless parade of gaping assholes and anonymous faces. How many stars has the industry created in this decade? Real stars, I mean? Someone who can last more than a month, whose face moves product.

We have wall-to-walls in triple digit editions with an endless parade of unknown girls who do one or two movies and split. In the early 1990s, I knew all the big stars, and girls could establish themselves as a star without getting crude. Think Victoria Paris or Nikki Dial could get away with their style of performing now?

Now, it seems like the only way to get any attention is to get as far into the gutter as possible, or take the most abuse.

Plus, production has never been worse. Stuff is knocked out in days with absolutely no care at all because it's time to move on to do Fuck Pigs #74.

With a lot fewer girls available and the international market shut off, we will see less product coming out, and hopefully this means more time and care will be put into the product (production these days is so sloppy), girls who can establish a name brand, and maybe an improvement in quality.

Won't happen, as time and money would be spent on legal fees. Other reasons too, but don't feel like taking the time right now.

I don't agree with your logic. I think that this will slow things down slightly while the talent pool realigns. Many of the companies cranking out product are very dependent on the cashflow that X number of releases per month generates. If they put our fewer releases it certainly won't have the effect you think it will.

I think it will result in more companies doing what Vivid does. While Vivid may actually make a few movies once in a while, the vast majority of the product they release is re-hashed, re-edited and re-titled. I expect to see more of this. I'm not saying it's a good thing.

The only thing that will stop crap from being produced is for the public to stop buying it. Unfortunately, when it comes to porn, even "crap" is good enough for most people if it's cheap enough (or free).

How many people buy a title simply because it has a certain girl, and not because the director has a strong reputation for delivering quality porn.

I suspect there are far too many fans who would rather purchases a low quality movie, because it stars their favorite it-girl, than buy a quality movie with performers that don't interest them.

I admit to doing the same thing myself.

Quase knows what he speaks of.
I've been going to the same two video stores in my neighborhood for 15 years.
The people that own and run them tell me that their best sellers on a consistent basis are those garbage 4 hr comps, the Leisure Time stuff.
This is some of the worst quality available as far as porn is concerned, but people see the $9.95 price tag and buy it anyway.
It also rents very well, the customer thinks they are getting a deal. But there's usually one or two decent scenes and the comp isn't 4 hours anyway, it's usually around 3.
As long as people still fall for buying garbage, it'll still be produced.
I miss the late 70's - late 80's porn scene.
Seka, Vanessa Del Rio, Amber Lynn, Ginger Lynn, Nina Hartley, Christy Canyon, Marilyn Chambers, John Holmes. Those were porn stars.
The only name I could think of from todays scene that can be mentioned in the same breath is Jenna Jameson. How she managed to rise above the thousands of other girls in this here today gone tomorrow business is a feat unto itself.

Says nothing for the porn buying public that they would consume even Z grade stuff.

I wish we would do more movies like in Japan, where there's one girl in the video, in every scene. That way you know you're getting nothing but your favorite. Saved me the trouble of buying a boatload of Sora Aoi discs. :)

Well there was the Dark Bros. or Andrew Blake. And I think the current state of things sorta keep someone like that from coming along.

However, studios have reps. Despite everything else wrong with Vivid and it's mannequins, they have decent production values.

That only proves that the girls aren't considered anonymous holes.

Ordell-

I want to agree. Man, do I ever want to agree. However, I think it is just too optimistic to predict a creative renaissance out of necessity in reponse to 2257. I think both Drew and Quaze are right. Logically, this has a better chance of leading to more compilations instead of better product, and the only way to force crap out of the market is not through heightened regulations but by simply not buying it.

"How many people buy a title simply because it has a certain girl, and not because the director has a strong reputation for delivering quality porn."

I don't. There are many directors and various companies that I won't touch. It would take TSC in a comeback film for these directors or companies to get me to check them out again. However, I think fans like myself are the exception and you are probably right.

Yor argument sounds like an answer to building up a national sports team (home grown players, less cheap imports). I don't agree. There is top quality porn out there and there crap quality porn and [what Quaserman said]. The new regs are bad, bad, bad and bad.

I wouldn't comps of individual girls. Let's me get stuff of girls I like rather than rent a movie for one scene (Haley Page comp, now! With her ultrawiredsex.com scene, too!).

I just hope that by thinning the talent pool, such as it is, it will mean less product and hopefully and improvement in the product.

I buy/rent purely for the women in the movies. The secondary concern is director/company. If they have crap for camerawork, are grainy, etc. then I stay away.
These days everybody is so prolific that it isn't a hassle. Back in the days of Nikki Dial, an entire career might be 20-100 movies. Bridgette Kerkove topped that (and maybe tripled it) in her first year alone! Certainly by the end of three months there are usually dozens of scenes in the can awaiting editing.

A slow down will never bring higher quality. Higher quality takes time and money. If a director can put together a well filmed scene with good editing in 1/3 the time of a feature, he will make more. Certainly the sales numbers point to gonzo as being the mainstream of porn.

I second that with this post and with the fact that 70% of the porn movies I have bought since I am an ADT member are exactly that. The next movie I'll buy will be with Flower Tucci in every scene.

As for the 2257 stuff I think with fewer studios quality will not become better. Lacking alternatives porn fans will have to get their stuff at the studios that remain, so these studios can afford to produce crap a lot easier. Of course I hope the number of studios won't decline so dramatically but you never know. If government wants to destroy the industry I'm afraid many will be forced to give up. Better go chasing Osama again.

There's no 'I' in fuck, bang, screw or shag but two of 'em in virgin.
