It doesn't play red light district dvds well at all. I know it is the dvd player because when I watch them in my home theater I have no problem. I want to buy one of the really cheap dvd players but I don't want to have the same problem. I was thinking of buying a daewoo for about 100 bucks. Does anyone have one? If so how does it work with porn dvds(especially Red Light District)? Can anyone reccomend another cheap DVD player that works well with Red Light District? Thank you. [Link]

In fact, the problem with Sony is that it´s TOO precise, and porn DVDs aren´t exactly THX certified. I have a mega-changer as well, so I usually only use this player for PAL DVD's. So, I can't give you an across the board recommendation. But also like GaySatyr, I haven't had a problem with any disk yet. Before writing this post, I went and loaded two RLD titles (Young Ripe Melons & 110% Natural 3). Both of them played with no problems. I have one of the more expensive Sampo's (if you can call $139 expensive). However, other Sampo's can be found for under $90. All Sampo's can play both PAL & NTSC DVD's and convert them to whichever format you prefer with no modifications. The modification to convert this player to multi-region is simply burning a file onto a CD-ROM and loading it into your player. [Link]

I got it for about $150 and have had absolutely no problems with any disc except for one. The manual says it can play PAL DVDs but I don't own any and I don't own a PAL-capable TV. It also is a progressive scan model. It plays Red Light District discs flawlessly, as well as Evil Angel, and Wicked, well, let's just say every studio. Click to expand Planet, How many times are you going to say this only to be contradicted with the fact that this is not an accurate for TV's sold in the U.S.(which is where Mike lives)? Mike, On the Setup menu, is there an option of what output format you want (PAL/NTSC/Native)? If so, it is possible (even likely) that your DVD player will convert PAL discs to NTSC. If your DVD player does have this choice on the Setup menu, let me know. I'll send you one of my PAL DVD's so you can test it out without having to spend money on a DVD that you might not be able to watch. [Link]

Actually it has an option for Multi, NTSC, and PAL, each are able to be chosen separately. I'll send you one of my PAL DVD's so you can test it out without having to spend money on a DVD that you might not be able to watch. Sounds cool, I've been curious whether or not this will work, seeing is how this is an option that I never thought of using. But I certainly want to give this a try. My primary reason for buying this player is that my parents own a Philips DVD player, not the one I got, but similar. If you decide on one I'd suggest Walmart, due to their 90 day return policy. I have an Apex 1100-w which I use as a back-up for my Toshiba. I haven't found a disc that it won't play (in fact it plays discs that my Toshiba won't). The picture quality is slightly less than the Toshiba, but still good. It plays non-region PAL discs perfectly (it can be made region-free very easily with a download). It's plain & not exactly solidly built, but if you get one that works & you take care of it, it should do the job. Good places to learn about Apex, Sampo, Daewoo & other cheap players are area450.com & nerd-out.com. There is a link to nerdout at area450. These are both forums comprised mostly of computer geeks who enjoy hacking inexpensive players, so expect some some techie jargon. But anyone is welcome, & you'll get some valuable info reading the forums there. BigMike-if you have the option to select NTSC, PAL, or Multi, my guess is that your Phillips has a built-in converter. Although the owners manual indicates that it won't. From page 36 of the owner's manual: "This DVD Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, in order for a DVD to play on this DVD Player, the color system of the DVD, the TV, and the DVD Player should match. If all three are not the same, the DVD may play in only black and white, the picture may roll continuously, or the picture may appear distorted." I tend to believe the people at AVS forum more than the owner's manual. If the people at AVS are correct, the only negative is that there is currently no region hack. This means that you will only be able to watch region free DVD's using this player. Fortunately, this includes virtually all adult DVD's. Unfortunately, if you decide that you want to watch some mainstream PAL DVD's you're out of luck. You may want to keep an eye on the DVD & LD Hardware forum on AVS Forum to see if someone comes up with the region hack. Apparently other Philips region hacks have been accomplished by pressing a series of buttons on the remote control. Mike, I found your old e-mail with your address in my archive folder. I gave my father a hard time for deleting an e-mail that I sent my mother last week (he prints and deletes them, then my mother loses the hard copy and I get to send the e-mail again). I failed to mention that my Apex has 2 minor flaws. It says it has A-B repeat in the manual but it actually does not (bummer for porn viewers). Also, the remote is kind of goofy. You don't use the up/down/left/right buttons to navigate the menu. Instead, you have to push a shift button & then use a separate set of arrows in the numbers keypad area. I will definately check out the apex, sampo, and Philips as well as others. I am very picky about these things. I am even more picky when im buying components for my home theater. For my porno's I just basically want a dvd player that plays my favorite studios without a problem. I was going to buy the Sampo 612 myself at Buy.com for $80 (that was before I realized that the Apex I already had played PAL discs anyway). If you get if for anything under $80 you've done real well. Good luck. I think the Sampo can be made region free from the remote, no need to download an upgrade. Secondly, unless the DVD player specifically says it does, very few U.S. DVD players will even load a PAL disc. Players treat them exactly same way as if the disc was for the wrong region. The player displays "Invalid Disc" and refuses to load. Telling people that they should spend their money on something because you did a single test on a single TV is irresponsible. [Link]

I haven't bothered flashing my Apex since all my PAL discs are region free adult discs. As Bill said, if I want to play mainstream PAL discs that are region coded, I'll just need to download an upgrade. The download is available free at nerd-out.com. I don't know of any U.S. retailers selling PAL DVD's (there's no reason as most TV's and DVD players in Europe can also play NTSC discs properly). There are a few foreign dealers who are represented at ADT. Orgazmik.com is an affiliate and EroDVD.nl/Erovideo.nl checks in on the International Shopping forum regularly. By the way, I should have mentioned this earlier, for anyone who decides to purchase PAL DVD's from one of the European retailers, it would be a good idea for you to indicate that you have equipment capable of playing PAL DVD's when you place your order. Otherwise your order will either be held up while you exchange e-mails with the retailer when they make sure that you can play the DVD's that you ordered, or they just cancel your order assuming that you don't have the proper equipment. Way back when, Orgazmik incorrectly identified some of their DVD's as being NTSC. When I placed an order with them, I received the following e-mail: "Dear Sir, Thank you for your order. The titles you have selected are only available in European PAL format as almost any other European titles we offer. For that reason we have cancelled your order." The best stores for purchase of PAL discs are Erodvd.nl & Orgazmik (the European shop-not the US one). You can get lots of stuff at these stores that you cannot get in the US. I've not tried them but erodvd even has uncensored Max Hardcore (with pissing & fisting), other dvd's of extreme nature from German companies like Magma, Dvdrama, etc. They even sell animal sex flicks at erodvd, though I've not seen anything like them since the old 8mm film days. You can follow the int'l shopping forum & see what the guys in Europe are buying, usually from erodvd. There are European releases of some American companies (like Evil Angel). You have to figure out the titles, though, since they're in German & often titled completely differently. One thing, DO NOT try the Devils Angel PAL versions of the 18 & Nasty series. Erodvd is for dvd's only. Erovideo is for vhs but also has dvd listings. For some strange reason some dvd's are listed at one site but not the other & vice versa. I use erodvd because of lower prices & they will ship anything free, no minimums. They wrap the disc in plastic wrap & ship just the disc & the cover art. If you want the box they will ship it later. I never ask for the box, I've got a zillion of them. I had one disc that came cracked, they shipped me a replacement pronto. Only problem is that their server is not real secure. Some guys prefer just ordering by email, or ordering & then sending their credit card info in 2 separate emails. Their contact, Aileen, is pretty good about taking care of things. Don't let these guys on ebay fool you. They make you think that you must pay a hefty premium to get a code-free PAL player, when actually virtually all of the machines made in China (or Taiwan) will play non region coded discs right out of the box. Every porn I've ever come across is not region coded (PAL are just like here in the US). If you do want to make them code-free just check at area450 or nerd-out & get a free download upgrade. You can also make many of them "vcr friendly", if you know what I mean (cannot be mentioned in these threads). I don't care about that aspect anyway, but some guys have old tv's without any hookups at all & legitimately could use this feature. Also, if you are looking for real exotic stuff from Germany, search for the ADT threads with Scott Kinney of xxximports. He has an encylopedic knowledge of German & other Euro porn. Click to expand You can't get in trouble for ordering the pissing & fisting DVD's. I don't know about the bestiality (but I don't really think that this would be a problem either). Even if a title were determined to be "obscene" by some court in the U.S., it is not illegal to own "obscene" material, it is illegal to sell "obscene" material. The worst that could happen would be that it could be seized. The only thing that you should be concerned with would be child porn. Some European sites still sell old Traci Lords titles (from before she was 18). If customs happened to open a package containing one of these discs, then you could get in trouble. For what it's worth, I've probably placed about 15-20 orders for tapes & DVD's from Europe. I've never had anything opened by customs. [Link]

One of the problems with Sampo's in e-bay is that the sellers promote the fact that the player has been modified to be multi-region and Macrovision-free. This tends to drive the price too high because people don't know how easy it is to do yourself. I would suggest that you try Buy.com. They are selling the entry level Sampo for < $90 with free shipping. Also, there are often Buy.com coupons available. Also, unlike buying off of e-bay, you know that you are dealing with a reputable company. You can also go look at area450 to see who else is selling the Sampo's and for how much. [Link]

You can find various Apex models for under $60-but as I said previously, it's a hit/miss with Apex. A lot of people seem to get Apex's that don't work & have to return them til they find one that does. I paid $63.74 for mine at Walmart. It's worked fine for me so far, but you better believe I have the receipt in a safe place. If it craps out before the 90 days, I'll return it & probably get the Sampo. The Sampo 612 is currently "on order" at buy.com, but at $90 (& free shipping) you're probably only going to pay around $25 more for the Sampo. I'd get the Sampo 612 at buy.com. Plus, it can be made region free from the remote, no need to download an upgrade. [Link]

I bought it a little over a year ago for $150, it's sturdy and well-built, and plays almost anything. The only problem I've had was with My Plaything Jenna Jameson and Chasing Stacy , which many people have had problems with on many different players. I haven't tried PAL discs, though. The APEX player that I keep hearing bad things about is a really inexpensive one, like $60-80. I forgot the model number, but I heard there was trouble with the disc drawer opening and closing. It's a pretty small unit. This could be the same one Menace was talking about. Spend a little over $100.00, and you'll probably be okay. Bill Broderick, thanks for the info! [Link]

The loader drawer problem affects a lot of their models. If it works right from the box, you're probably ok. I got mine as a backup & to play PAL so why pay more than I need to? I said Apex was hit/miss. Looks like you got a hit, hope mine is too. Actually the model I have (AD1100W) is one of the more highly-regarded by the guys at nerd-out.com-even at $63.74 (it's now down to under $60 at Walmart). Click to expand Mike, I'm glad it worked. NTSC is the correct setting for all of these DVD players. That setting is represting the type of TV that you have, not the type of DVD that you are playing. The reason the "Multi" is an option is that if you have a multi standard TV, it is better to play the original format rather than converting it. For us, we just need to set it to NTSC no matter what type of DVD we are playing. [Link]

(Purchase by 10/21-but you'd have to do it b/4 10/8 to get the $30 off) This is the model GaySatyr has & has worked well for him for a year or so. It has a built-in flash card reader. See what GS has to say about it. I use a sony dvd player where I watch most of my porn. This dvd player really sucks. It doesn't play red light district dvds well at all. I know it is the dvd player because when I watch them in my home theater I have no problem. I want to buy one of the really cheap dvd players but I don't want to have the same problem. I was thinking of buying a daewoo for about 100 bucks. Does anyone have one? If so how does it work with porn dvds(especially Red Light District)? Can anyone reccomend another cheap DVD player that works well with Red Light District? Thank you.

But hey, Sony doesn´t suck. In fact, the problem with Sony is that it´s TOO precise, and porn DVDs aren´t exactly THX certified.

BTW, if you want a codefree player that can also handle PAL titles, so you can watch european stuff as well, check [invalid URL removed]this one here.

I use a Sampo model that is modified for multi-region. Can't answer as to its playing discs from RLD; however, it has played everything I've thrown at it perfectly.

Like GaySatyr, I also own a multi-region Sampo. I have a mega-changer as well, so I usually only use this player for PAL DVD's. So, I can't give you an across the board recommendation. But also like GaySatyr, I haven't had a problem with any disk yet.

Before writing this post, I went and loaded two RLD titles (Young Ripe Melons & 110% Natural 3). Both of them played with no problems.

I have one of the more expensive Sampo's (if you can call $139 expensive). However, other Sampo's can be found for under $90.

All Sampo's can play both PAL & NTSC DVD's and convert them to whichever format you prefer with no modifications. The modification to convert this player to multi-region is simply burning a file onto a CD-ROM and loading it into your player.

I recently, a few months ago actually, bought a Philips DVD player, model: DVD724T.

I got it for about $150 and have had absolutely no problems with any disc except for one. The manual says it can play PAL DVDs but I don't own any and I don't own a PAL-capable TV. It also is a progressive scan model.

It plays Red Light District discs flawlessly, as well as Evil Angel, and Wicked, well, let's just say every studio.

Great investment in my opinion.

On the Setup menu, is there an option of what output format you want (PAL/NTSC/Native)? If so, it is possible (even likely) that your DVD player will convert PAL discs to NTSC. If your DVD player does have this choice on the Setup menu, let me know. I'll send you one of my PAL DVD's so you can test it out without having to spend money on a DVD that you might not be able to watch.

Yes it does have the option for PAL. Actually it has an option for Multi, NTSC, and PAL, each are able to be chosen separately.

I'll send you one of my PAL DVD's so you can test it out without having to spend money on a DVD that you might not be able to watch.

Sounds cool, I've been curious whether or not this will work, seeing is how this is an option that I never thought of using. But I certainly want to give this a try.

My primary reason for buying this player is that my parents own a Philips DVD player, not the one I got, but similar. When I tried a trouble DVD in it, there were no problems, so I thought I'd treat myself to a new one when my birthday came around. Works great.

Darth-Apex is a hit/miss proposition. If you decide on one I'd suggest Walmart, due to their 90 day return policy. I have an Apex 1100-w which I use as a back-up for my Toshiba. I haven't found a disc that it won't play (in fact it plays discs that my Toshiba won't). The picture quality is slightly less than the Toshiba, but still good. It plays non-region PAL discs perfectly (it can be made region-free very easily with a download). It's plain & not exactly solidly built, but if you get one that works & you take care of it, it should do the job.

Good places to learn about Apex, Sampo, Daewoo & other cheap players are area450.com & nerd-out.com. There is a link to nerdout at area450. These are both forums comprised mostly of computer geeks who enjoy hacking inexpensive players, so expect some some techie jargon. But anyone is welcome, & you'll get some valuable info reading the forums there.

BigMike-if you have the option to select NTSC, PAL, or Multi, my guess is that your Phillips has a built-in converter. Just set it to NTSC & put in your PAL disc, it should play.

(Forgot to mention, I have many RLD discs & they play fine in my Apex)

I did a check at AVS forum, and it appers that the DVD724AT does convert PAL discs to NTSC. Although the owners manual indicates that it won't. From page 36 of the owner's manual: "This DVD Player is compatible with NTSC and PAL. However, in order for a DVD to play on this DVD Player, the color system of the DVD, the TV, and the DVD Player should match. If all three are not the same, the DVD may play in only black and white, the picture may roll continuously, or the picture may appear distorted."

I tend to believe the people at AVS forum more than the owner's manual. If the people at AVS are correct, the only negative is that there is currently no region hack. This means that you will only be able to watch region free DVD's using this player.

Fortunately, this includes virtually all adult DVD's. Unfortunately, if you decide that you want to watch some mainstream PAL DVD's you're out of luck.

You may want to keep an eye on the DVD & LD Hardware forum on AVS Forum to see if someone comes up with the region hack. Apparently other Philips region hacks have been accomplished by pressing a series of buttons on the remote control.

I failed to mention that my Apex has 2 minor flaws. It says it has A-B repeat in the manual but it actually does not (bummer for porn viewers). Also, the remote is kind of goofy. You don't use the up/down/left/right buttons to navigate the menu. Instead, you have to push a shift button & then use a separate set of arrows in the numbers keypad area. A little hard to get accustomed to, not a very "logical" remote.

Thank you very much everyone!!! I really appreciate the feedback and im going to weigh all the options. I will definately check out the apex, sampo, and Philips as well as others. I am very picky about these things. I am even more picky when im buying components for my home theater. For my porno's I just basically want a dvd player that plays my favorite studios without a problem. It is so frustrating that RLD is becoming my favorite studio and I can't watch the dvds in my usual place. I have to watch them in my home theater. Thanx again. You guys are the best!!!

I just bid on a sampo dve 612. From what I read the Sampo can play almost anything. Hopefully I will win the bid. I only bid 35 bucks with 25 bucks shipping. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Darth, you made a good choice. I was going to buy the Sampo 612 myself at Buy.com for $80 (that was before I realized that the Apex I already had played PAL discs anyway). If you get if for anything under $80 you've done real well. Good luck. I think the Sampo can be made region free from the remote, no need to download an upgrade.

Also, give credit to Gay Satyr & Bill Broderick for the area450 tip. It was in the old thread about PAL players, if I remember right.

It doesn't work. An NTSC set made for the U.S. market will not display a PAL signal properly. Secondly, unless the DVD player specifically says it does, very few U.S. DVD players will even load a PAL disc. Players treat them exactly same way as if the disc was for the wrong region. The player displays "Invalid Disc" and refuses to load.

Telling people that they should spend their money on something because you did a single test on a single TV is irresponsible.

Just for clarification and for anyone wanting a player that plays PAL, Apex players will play PAL non region coded PAL discs, without a flash upgrade, right out of the box. I haven't bothered flashing my Apex since all my PAL discs are region free adult discs. As Bill said, if I want to play mainstream PAL discs that are region coded, I'll just need to download an upgrade. The download is available free at nerd-out.com.

Who makes Pal discs? Do you need a PAL player just to play foreign DVDs or are they domestic too? I should be ashamed not knowing this stuff being that im a home theater buff. I was never good with technical stuff.

by the way ive been outbid but there are plenty of others on ebay for even cheaper. Ive pretty much set my sights on the Sampo 612. Im sure I will get it for $35.00 - $40.00 on ebay.

You only need a PAL player for foreign (European) DVD's. I don't know of any U.S. retailers selling PAL DVD's (there's no reason as most TV's and DVD players in Europe can also play NTSC discs properly). There are a few foreign dealers who are represented at ADT. Orgazmik.com is an affiliate and EroDVD.nl/Erovideo.nl checks in on the International Shopping forum regularly.

By the way, I should have mentioned this earlier, for anyone who decides to purchase PAL DVD's from one of the European retailers, it would be a good idea for you to indicate that you have equipment capable of playing PAL DVD's when you place your order. Otherwise your order will either be held up while you exchange e-mails with the retailer when they make sure that you can play the DVD's that you ordered, or they just cancel your order assuming that you don't have the proper equipment.

Way back when, Orgazmik incorrectly identified some of their DVD's as being NTSC. When I placed an order with them, I received the following e-mail:

"Dear Sir,

Thank you for your order. The titles you have selected are only available in European PAL format as almost any other European titles we offer.

For that reason we have cancelled your order."

After buying a PAL capable DVD player, I indicated this on my next order and received no such communication.

Darth, PAL is a completely different (& incompatible with American NTSC) tv standard that is used in other parts of the world (including virtually all of Europe).
The best stores for purchase of PAL discs are Erodvd.nl & Orgazmik (the European shop-not the US one). You can get lots of stuff at these stores that you cannot get in the US. I've not tried them but erodvd even has uncensored Max Hardcore (with pissing & fisting), other dvd's of extreme nature from German companies like Magma, Dvdrama, etc. They even sell animal sex flicks at erodvd, though I've not seen anything like them since the old 8mm film days.

You can follow the int'l shopping forum & see what the guys in Europe are buying, usually from erodvd. There are European releases of some American companies (like Evil Angel). You have to figure out the titles, though, since they're in German & often titled completely differently. One thing, DO NOT try the Devils Angel PAL versions of the 18 & Nasty series. The video transfer was terrible.

Erodvd & erovideo are the same company but they use 2 websites. Erodvd is for dvd's only. Erovideo is for vhs but also has dvd listings. For some strange reason some dvd's are listed at one site but not the other & vice versa.

I haven't used Orgazmik yet, but they are an ADT advertiser so they should be ok. I use erodvd because of lower prices & they will ship anything free, no minimums. They wrap the disc in plastic wrap & ship just the disc & the cover art. If you want the box they will ship it later. I never ask for the box, I've got a zillion of them. I had one disc that came cracked, they shipped me a replacement pronto. Only problem is that their server is not real secure. Some guys prefer just ordering by email, or ordering & then sending their credit card info in 2 separate emails. Their contact, Aileen, is pretty good about taking care of things.

Erodvd's site is a little tricky to work your way around. Orgazmik has screen shots & short reviews which are very handy.

Another tip for those of you who are looking for a PAL player. Don't let these guys on ebay fool you. They make you think that you must pay a hefty premium to get a code-free PAL player, when actually virtually all of the machines made in China (or Taiwan) will play non region coded discs right out of the box. Every porn I've ever come across is not region coded (PAL are just like here in the US). If you do want to make them code-free just check at area450 or nerd-out & get a free download upgrade. You can also make many of them "vcr friendly", if you know what I mean (cannot be mentioned in these threads). I don't care about that aspect anyway, but some guys have old tv's without any hookups at all & legitimately could use this feature.

Also, if you are looking for real exotic stuff from Germany, search for the ADT threads with Scott Kinney of xxximports. He has an encylopedic knowledge of German & other Euro porn.

I am really contemplating settling on an Apex instead of a Sampo. You folks have been extremely helpful. I would appreciate any feedback on the apex's. Especially the 1500's.

You can't get in trouble for ordering the pissing & fisting DVD's. I don't know about the bestiality (but I don't really think that this would be a problem either). Even if a title were determined to be "obscene" by some court in the U.S., it is not illegal to own "obscene" material, it is illegal to sell "obscene" material. The worst that could happen would be that it could be seized.
The only thing that you should be concerned with would be child porn. Some European sites still sell old Traci Lords titles (from before she was 18). If customs happened to open a package containing one of these discs, then you could get in trouble.
For what it's worth, I've probably placed about 15-20 orders for tapes & DVD's from Europe. I've never had anything opened by customs.

How much are the Sampo's going for? One of the problems with Sampo's in e-bay is that the sellers promote the fact that the player has been modified to be multi-region and Macrovision-free.

This tends to drive the price too high because people don't know how easy it is to do yourself.

I would suggest that you try Buy.com. They are selling the entry level Sampo for < $90 with free shipping. Also, there are often Buy.com coupons available. Also, unlike buying off of e-bay, you know that you are dealing with a reputable company.

You can also go look at area450 to see who else is selling the Sampo's and for how much.

Darth--I agree with Bill. You can find various Apex models for under $60-but as I said previously, it's a hit/miss with Apex. A lot of people seem to get Apex's that don't work & have to return them til they find one that does. I paid $63.74 for mine at Walmart. It's worked fine for me so far, but you better believe I have the receipt in a safe place. If it craps out before the 90 days, I'll return it & probably get the Sampo. The Sampo 612 is currently "on order" at buy.com, but at $90 (& free shipping) you're probably only going to pay around $25 more for the Sampo. I'd get the Sampo 612 at buy.com. Plus, it can be made region free from the remote, no need to download an upgrade.

thanks again Menace. Again you come to the rescue. Everyone keeps talking about the free shipping but when I tried to order it it was like 25-80 bucks extra. I think I am setting my sights on the Sampo again but I need to get it at a good price.

Being on backorder is what is causing the problem here. From Buy.com's Free Shipping page: "Free shipping offer is limited to "In Stock" items only." If you wait for them to get the Sampo back in stock before ordering, the shipping should be free.

Well, guys, all I have to say is that the Sampo I bought is well worth the money. I have several non-porn, Pal-format videos that are region coded for Europe. All display perfectly on my standard, USA-version Sony television when played on the Sampo unit.

I'm VERY happy with my APEX DVD player. I bought it a little over a year ago for $150, it's sturdy and well-built, and plays almost anything. The only problem I've had was with My Plaything Jenna Jameson and Chasing Stacy , which many people have had problems with on many different players. I haven't tried PAL discs, though.

The APEX player that I keep hearing bad things about is a really inexpensive one, like $60-80. I forgot the model number, but I heard there was trouble with the disc drawer opening and closing. It's a pretty small unit. This could be the same one Menace was talking about. Spend a little over $100.00, and you'll probably be okay.

Thighmaster, actually you can get an Apex with the most advanced features now (multiple disc, progressive scan, component outputs) for well under $150. The loader drawer problem affects a lot of their models. If it works right from the box, you're probably ok. I got mine as a backup & to play PAL so why pay more than I need to?
I said Apex was hit/miss. Looks like you got a hit, hope mine is too.
Actually the model I have (AD1100W) is one of the more highly-regarded by the guys at nerd-out.com-even at $63.74 (it's now down to under $60 at Walmart).

Well, I got it today, damn fast shipping for Priority Mail, Bill.

I went into the menu, selected "PAL" format, the result:
distorted/off-color picture.

I then went into the menu and selected "Multi" format, same result:
distorted and off-color picture.

but, just for shits and giggles... I tried it in the NTSC option:
Well guess what... It worked.

Thanks for the update Mike! I guess I'm gonna have to get one. Too bad seeing as that I just bought a new DVD player in December (my third one) and I really love it! It's a Panasonic 5-disc carousel. Plays anything round & shiny, as long as it's not PAL. Dammitall!

Mike, I'm glad it worked. NTSC is the correct setting for all of these DVD players. That setting is represting the type of TV that you have, not the type of DVD that you are playing. The reason the "Multi" is an option is that if you have a multi standard TV, it is better to play the original format rather than converting it.

For us, we just need to set it to NTSC no matter what type of DVD we are playing.

Well, anyway the Philips plays/played a PAL DVD, now for the fuck of it, I'll try it in my old Zenith. See if it loads.

To all who are considering Sampo players:

There is now a $10 off coupon for buy.com that you can activate at area450, expires 10/8. It's for 1st time buyers only & for $100 or more in electronics.
If you buy the 612, you'd have to come up with $10.01 more in electronics purchases.

There is also a $20 rebate (from Sampo) for the Sampo 631cf at buy.com. (Purchase by 10/21-but you'd have to do it b/4 10/8 to get the $30 off) This is the model GaySatyr has & has worked well for him for a year or so. It has a built-in flash card reader. See what GS has to say about it.

Area450 has it as a net of $100 for the 631 (using both the coupon & rebate) but if you go to buy.com it looks to me like area450 have it wrong & it's actually a net of $110. The shipping is free also. Still, a real good price for this player. (You'd have to flash upgrade if you want it be completely region free-but area450 will walk you right thru it).

Personally, I would buy from buy.com. Find something you really need to bring it over $100 & then use the $10 off coupon at area450. Plus you're dealing with a reputable company you can trust. Even without the $10 it's actually $14 less at buy.com (counting the free shipping) then what you are proposing. Just my opinion.
