I always use the active topics page to start browsing the forums. I open topics I want to read in new tabs and then I mark all topics read. This works fine on my first visit of the day, when I get fresh session cookies, but if I do a second visit in the same browser session things go wrong.
Today I visited a few hours ago and all was fine, but now I get back it says "Active Topics Since Last Visit on 9/23/2019 9:46:01 AM" while my last visit was today. And of course it loads a huge list when it goes back that far.

I still have to use Chrome instead of Firefox to avoid this:

Nope! After a refresh it says Last Visit on 11/2/2019 7:33:16 PM while it was 5 minutes ago.

It works when I close my browser (Firefox), but not when I close my tab or leave the site. I think that's normal though because it just never updated before.

ok, I will dig into it a bit more.

there's 2 cookies involved a session cookie and a persistent cookie. The persistent cookie stores the date you last visited. The value of that persistent cookie date is copied to the session cookie when you establish a new session. If your browser settings don't allow persistent cookies (or if your cookies are cleared automatically) the forum code has no way of knowing when you last visited. I suppose I can store that info in the database instead of in a persistent cookie.

I don't have it set to clear my cookies upon the close of the browser.

I see 3 cookies from ADT:

ADTS2, a session cookie. If I clear this one manually between two visits all works fine.
ADT2, a persistent cookie that I do not clear.
vportw, the window size cookie.

So to recap, if the session cookie is not already there (with new browser session) all is fine, if the session cookie already exists it goes wrong.

Did some more work on it this morning. Seems like it's behaving properly now.

It says now:
Active Topics Since Last Visit on 1/8/2020 8:04:47 PM
while my last visit was today, but at least it's boing back just a day now and not months.

Would this work you did happen to have anything to do with why all the forum topics and individual threads suddenly turned blue (with all the little folder icons colored blue) when I logged in today? Seriously, when I logged in earlier today, EVERYTHING - topics/forums I read and don't read - was blue, as if I had logged in for the first time or something. Right now, it's the same thing, only the threads I actually read are no longer blue; everything else is blue. Also, I see that the "You last Visted" date and time listed on the Forum Home page is incorrect; it has my last visit as Dec 30 2019 : 10:53PM.

Five months after my initial post, I'm still experiencing all the problems described in that post:

I've gotten used to it, however, I have to admit it's always been kind of annoying that I can't use the blue post highlights as my guide to unread posts like I'm supposed to be able to do. Instead, I just have to go off of my memory of what posts I read.

I haven't looked at this. What browser are you using? I know we had some private messages about this but I no longer have them saved.

There are 2 cookies involved like Jacco mentioned above. There's a session cookie and a persistent cookie. If you're browsing with something that clears your cookies after each visit then of course everything is going to appear to be new.

I have two different devices that I use to access Adult DVD Talk-an Ipad and a Windows PC. On both, Google Chrome is the web browser I use. Also for both, I use Chrome's "incognito window" every time I'm on ADT. Could that be the problem? I mean, I've been doing it this way for years now, never had this problem come up until January.

So you have to log in every time you visit ADT?

Yes, on both devices, I login in every single time I view ADT, and logoff once I'm done.

Oh, wow, it's better. No longer is every forum and thread link blue. Additionally, I just noticed that the "You last Visited" date and time is correct. I don't know what you did, but it certainly appears to have worked. Thanks, as always!
