And yes, avidemux does a good job. I use it all the time to join or split scenes or stitch them together.

Movies I get from DVDs are in the MPEG format, those you can simply copy together. Under Windows, use

copy /b file1 + file2 output.mpg

With other (more modern formats), appending them with avidemux ist the solution.

I do also a fair amount of editing on it, especially since all my playback is done in 16x9, those ~2005ish Digital Sin DVDs with in non-anamorphic letterbox are a nuisance, since they then have bars all around. Here I use kdenlive as a video editor (on Linux) to zoom in in these sequences (and make a 16x9 version of the movie). That's especially the case when the format changes multiple times throughout the movie (that is happening a lot in the time when 16x9 was slowly taking over, but 4x3 DVDs were still put out.

Zooming in won't give you a better resolution, but this way you're able to watch the movie occupying the entire screen
