is it normal for ad-aware to be detecting new objects on a daily basis? I downloaded 6.0 several days ago, do a daily scan (although I imagine I should only have to do this once a week) and I continue to find several objects to delete daily.

A lot of the objects it finds are cookies called "tracking cookies" or "data miners" -- tell-tale leftovers from visiting any of millions of web sites who leave too much information behind on your computer. It would be unusual for Ad-aware to be finding a lot of other stuff on a daily basis unless you have another problem outside its scope.

The other white meat of anti-ad and anti-spyware software is SpyBot Search & Destroy. It included a different (although overlapping) set of tools aiding in keeping your computer clean.

Between the two programs and a good anti-virus (Norton or McAfee) program, you shouldn't have much of a problem. I'd suggest that you run each of them weekly.

Other useful aids include the Google toolbar and a utility called PopUp Stopper.

You might also change your cookie settings. I have my computer set to accept first party and session cookies and to ASK for all 3rd party cookies. Then, when the little window opens asking me to accept or reject cookies not directly related to the page I'm on, I use common sense and check to "always" block most of them. It is a nuisance at first but after a couple of weeks, you will have blocked most of the offenders and the interruption will almost go away.

Thanks for the feedback GaySatyr,

I run ad-aware, spybot search & destroy and norton's anti-virus so I have all bases covered.

You're right, most of the stuff I'm finding daily are data miners and tracking cookies. I only have the most basic of knowledge of what these are so what I'd like to know is if they should be of any concern.

Usually, no. When you go to a web site, often the site places a cookie on your computer to mark where you have been and to provide default information for your convenience. For example, it is cookies that track which posts in these forums you have read by placing a date/time code so that only new items are listed the next time you ask for "active topics" -- however, some cookies actually contain exactly what you have read and which sites you have visited -- when, how, who, what, where, & why -- if you get my drift. Such information is usually innocuous; but it should not be there at all. Plus, it can be read by other websites which just might like to know your web browsing habits. Thus, Ad-aware and SpyBot warn and offer to delete such garbage.
