They are not closing up shop all the way around, but sounds like this economy is taking it's toll. YOWZA!! Saw this on Adultfyi: Hillsborough, NC - Adam & Eve today announced a number of corporate changes are scheduled to take place in the near future. To take advantage of existing economies in North Carolina and to improve communication, creativity and collaboration, Adam & Eve Pictures is reorganizing its operations in Chatsworth, California. ³Our goal was to dramatically increase sales through the Chatsworth office. We did indeed increase sales in 2007 during an otherwise declining market, but the trends at this time in the general economy and the entertainment industry as a whole are impacting us as well.² says Bob Christian, Adam & Eve Pictures¹ General Manager. ³There have been other benefits to having a west coast presence, in addition to the increase in DVD sales and licensing revenue. We have successfully attracted talent such as Adam & Eve contract stars Bree Olson, Ava Rose and Kayden Kross. We have been closer to our productions and developed relationships such as the one which lead to Roller Dollz with partner Zero Tolerance.² continues Christian. "We will still have a presence on the west coast just a smaller footprint." "We will work to maintain the benefits of the west coast office that we have seen, while reducing our overhead. It is a business decision," says Christian. Peter Reynolds will focus on licensing worldwide movie rights, and Ryan Thomas will head up DVD unit sales. Order fulfillment will take place out of the PHE warehouse in NC. Bruce Whitney will remain in Chatsworth as Production Coordinator, while Meredith Christopher will serve as executive producer for all our lines. These changes will be effective July 1. Leisure Time didn't really go out of business, they just got bought up by Sunshine, so I don't expect there will be any decline in the 100s of 1000s of cheap comps flooding the market. What's the saying about "legends don't die", well neither does cheap bad porn, it just gets released by a different company a dozen different ways. It almost seems worse for the industry for them to go out of business, because then the new company will sit around trying to figure out how many different ways they can make comps out of those 1000s of comps they just acquired.

I totally agree that comps suck, but they are the heart and soul of the retail market. Cheap DVD's keep us alive and help our customers know what's better.
I differentiate between good comps and then the crap. Catalog comps (4 hours, etc.) from Devils, Sin City, Wicked, Vivid, Zero Tolerance among others are good comps. Leisure Time, Sunshine, Caballero, Maverick and Future Works are not. Comps where the girls on the cover aren't in the movie...those aren't good. Cheap old scenes recycled into 100 different comps is a crappy business practice, there's no way to justify that tactic. Catalog (or cheap-ish) movies are great when they are true catalog. Older titles that have been discounted to find a whole new customer. New Release comps are great when done correctly. A Best Of format, or similar is a great thing for the customer. Taking old, previously released scenes and trying to pass that off as a "new release" by slapping a new "studio" name on it...is a bullshit ripoff tactic and the customer deserves better.

I totally agree Nate, but it all really boils down to your target demographic. We are in a rural area, where the knowledge is scarce and the skepticism is high. We have customers that buy nothing but cheap comps because to them, porn is porn. When someone picks up an eight dollar "five hours of radical teen blowjobs" and walks over to the evil empire section and picks up a Jules Jordan for thirty-nine, and says to me, "if this one is eight bucks, then how come I can't get this one here for eight bucks", then you can pretty much consider this person officially lost, never to return to reality. I ALWAYS tell them, "because that one is a real movie, with listed actresses, a single director ( and a damn good one at that), real production dates, and just a way better view than what you got in your other hand". They always buy the comp. While we do have educated customers, they're rare, man and it's hard to educate God's America about what porn is better than what when they're constantly thinking about saving a buck, and are looking for something other then a Sears catalogue to stroke off too. It's sad, but true. Sure, our owner could say, "fuck it, I'm going to support the industry and not order anymore cheap comps", but he would find himself closing shop within months. I hate cheap comps as a fan, but have come to accept them as retailer, because my bills must be paid, and the view is a lot different from the bottom of this industry.
I feel ya MachoMan...but the comps from the companies I listed are a much better buy than the shit from Leisure Time, Future Works and their ilk. For a few quarters more, you get an infinitely better comp featuring legit footage and no ripoff tactics. What happens when that non-educated customer buys a Future Works DVD because it's got Ashley Blue on the cover, only to find she isn't in the movie at all? I think you lose a customer there, or his confidence in shopping at the store is hurt. Like I said...there's a place for catalog and comps. But support the studios that make quality comps that aren't intended to rip off the customer and the store. When Leisure Time puts out movies where girls listed aren't in the titles, that's because they don't give a shit what YOU or the customer thinks...they are just trying to make a cheap buck. When they put nothing but shit scenes from the 80s on a "new" comp, they are just trying to make a cheap buck at your expense. Why people continue to support a company that is so clearly a con-artist is baffling. If you tried to steal my wallet, that would be the end of my relationship with you...why does this industry act like such a pussy to save $0.50 and alienate 1000s of customers?
The cheapie comps do have their place. I doubt any educated/experienced porn consumer will get ripped off by a Leisure Time comp more than once (if even that), after which time they realize how the game is played. To the total newbie who finally works up the nerve to enter the porn shop, 8hrs for $8 is probably gonna do the trick for him, as either an intro into the world of porn or as a hideaway stash for the occasional quick whack session. If you've never seen porn before, anything that shows nudity and sex is gonna be at least passable, and having 4-8hrs of it increases the chances of there being some above-average stuff in the mix. "Old" porn is only old to those who closely follow the market. To everyone else, year/month of filming is not that big a deal. If I haven't seen it, it's "new" to me, regardless of the video store categorization of "New Release".
I would tend to agree with you, however studios like Leisure Time and Future Works have literally dozens (if not more) of made up psuedo-studios that they use to try and dupe you. If you are truly observant you'll notice that 12 digit UPC code starts with the same 6 digits, or you'll notice Custodian Of Records contacts being the same, but how many people take the time to notice that. I was in one store that had probably 1/2 their inventory from Future Works...when I asked them if Future Works stuff does THAT good he said they only had a little bit from Future Works, but then proceeded to show me his "other" studios like Pandemonium, Shockwave, City Girls, Magnetisum, Titan Babes, Sapphire, Forbidden Digital, Destiny Productions, etc...ALL those are Future Works lines using the same old footage over and over again that they got from Acid Rain / Demolition. People DO fall for it, and it happens all the time. Consumers like you that can spot the b.s. titles are the exception, not the rule.

I'm just a lowly clerk who happens to know a thing or two about smut (gonzo mainly). Nateglass, if you can name any of the guises used by future works or leisure time, I will gladly find them and put them all in one spot, and try to steer the customers away from them. Unless, they make up the majority of the the section, and then all I can do is look up at the survielance camera and shrug. I've worked at the same store on two extreme sides of the same city. These locations are only set apart by about 25 miles, but one location is more of an urban ethnic area, and one (the one I spend most of my time in) is in a weird place where rednecks clash with suburbans. Most of our business comes from the rural half. The preppy half just come in with their abercrombie shirts to laugh at dildos and midget porn. The cheapies make up a decent percentage of our revenue. Fortunately, from what I've observed, the urban side, where customers are way more educated, the good stuff outsells the cheap stuff. It really boils down to the average intellect of your entire customer base, and their willingness to look past you as a salesman, and believe what you say, because you know what your talking about.
I did exactly that a few posts back. But to give you another tip...ALL Future Works crap has a UPC starting with 649107. The custodian of records is almost always J.Resnick. Learning the UPC code prefixes and custodian of records trick is a great way to find those studios that try to make up fake studios to get their titles past consumers who were burned in the past. Leisure Time's UPC codes are all some variant of 739874. They have that exact same looking spine with a product ID code, and their 2257 label on the back is enormous. You look at enough of them, and you'll be able to tell right away. Same goes for Caballero...UPCs start with 805 or 005 with a Coldwater Canyon Custodian of Records address most the time.
