We used to see fairly regular posts on here from ADN, but ever since the removal of their LPG - all has gone quiet!!
They never even replied to the numerous posts on the subject of the removal of their LPG!
I used to buy anything between 5-10 DVD's weekly from them, but not any more.
Just wondering, for ADN;
1. how is business doing these days 2. are sales any lower/higher 3. was this a good business decision 4. how many customers do you estimate you have lost 5. any intention of bringing the LPG back :)
I spoke with ADN recently and asked many of the same questions. It might be best to write to them directly to get specific answers but I think I can share a few things I. These answers are my own opinions and not necessarily the answers you would get directly from ADN. 1) business is going great, 2) I don't know the answer to this one, 3) it was the correct decision 4)very few, 5) none whatsoever.
Keep in mind that the DVD market is growing on a daily basis. There are constantly new customers shopping for porn. While ADN may have lost a few very vocal, high maintenance, non-profit-generating customers they have easily increased their business with existing customers and new customers.
How could the removal of the LPG have been a bad thing for ADN as your post implies?
I too was a frequent buyer from ADN. But since the removal of the LPG, I have not gone back to them, YET!!
I know that they were probably losing a lot of money because of it, but on reflection, without it, their (average) prices were somewhat to significantly more expensive than some of the other online retailers. Especially to customers outside the United States.
However, I am not totally knocking them. I did receive the majority of my (growing) adult DVD collection through them. But, in my opinion, they could reduce (at least some of) their prices -- maybe on older stock titles -- or have more frequent sales or such. The Frequent Buyer Club option is just not an enticement enough to buy many titles from them on it's own.
When things improve in their direction i.e. prices, sales, etc., I would gladly add to my collection through them.
I think I'm with Drew on this one. My take on the LPG is that there really should be a reason why you don't buy the dvd from the original low price vendor.
For example, if 5 Star has the lowest price, why not order from them? The same holds true for Dvd Advantage, Empire, etc.
If zorro were ordering "5-10" dvd's a week through them, he'd be getting free shipping at 5 Star, and paying $5 at Advantage. The service at both of them, for the domestic market anyway, is very good.
I don't see a great cost savings with ADN under these circumstances. I like ADN, and I've never having used the LPG, but what's the fuss about? If cost is your sole consideration (and it shouldn't be), what is the difference with ordering elsewhere?
So I suppose my question to consumers that used to buy from ADN is, did you stop buying altogether or did you take your business elsewhere? If you took it elsewhere, did problems arise that made you want to go back to ADN? Just curious...
PS: look at the trend in mainstream dvd etailers-can you tell me that prices have gone down and all the other bonuses have gotten better this past year? I think not.
I used to be a fairly regular UK customer of ADN, ordering from them every 4 to 6 weeks. However I now buy my Private titles from www.dvdzone2.com (good european supplier) and most other titles from other US stores. I have even dismissed buying dvds altogether when I would have otherwise sent for them from ADN just because of the cost factor.
I now buy from ADN once every 10-12 weeks if the price is right....and additionally have not had any problems with other stores other than quality service and cheaper prices.
I think a better question is how much more business did the other companies pick up? Fivestar seem to be more attentive now to international consumers now, lowered prices etc. As net business is on the increase anyway, I think they will only see the effect in the long term.
Since I’ve stopped using them, I’ve used a few other stores. I still buy as many dvd’s. Unless they have a sale, I won’t be going back to ‘ADN’.
Well... It's neither new nor unusual that brand loyalty is much less on the net than in 'real' life.
While until now you were going to that one shop because it's near or because you like the people or the atmosphere there, there are none of these reasons to stick to a shop on the internet. OK... Maybe you have a favourite shop because you like the site's layout, but in general one can say that on the net the next competitor is only one click away. There's no effort necessary to go shopping elsewhere. You don't really need to get used to where everything is. Just type in a search and you'll get a list of your favourite items. Most of the time there are no personal reasons to keep shopping at one shop, because the service is nearly the same everywhere and most of the time all the customer-support people are friendly and helpful.
So it's not really a bad thing. Since the word 'loyalty' sounds so positive talking about missing brand loyalty sounds kind of negative which in reality it's not. I think it's great to be able to check for bargains that quickly and effortless and to have a choice where to buy.
Torris, you raise some good points. I had forgotten about the dollar off thing. I don't really care much about the crappy freebie they offer though. I think the point is, they couldn't sustain the price match along with the extra dollar off so it's a moot point nowadays.
If I were ordering a 30+dvd order at 5 Star, I'd have free shipping too so half of any "savings" would be sucked up by ADN's shipping charges (and I hate UPS-their preferred shipper). On top of that, I consider my time to have value. PM'ing a large order is a PIA and takes time.
The stores have to make a profit or they won't survive. How they minimize costs to lower prices is important to me-and most others-though. I like the service that some of the affiliates provide-the three I use the most are very helpful when needed. I intend on using them over and over unless another affiliate has a huge sale on some brand I'd like to stock up on. If ADN were to offer all it's Evil Angel dvd's for $18 tommorrow-I'd probably drop several hundred dollars to provide myself with some more review material. I doubt 5 Star, Empire, or Dvd Advantage would blame me-and they know how loyal I can be...
I used to place an order with ADN avery 4-6 weeks for 5-15dvds.. though I've not ordered since they dropped the LPG.
I used to get mostly Private titles from them, and like Torris stated, my "brand" loyalty is to the companies that produce the product, or the creators.
My loyalty in mainstream films is to Scorsese, or DeNiro, or (insert director/actor here). In Adult DVD it's also to the performer and director, and the "brand" loyalty goes to the studios that provide good stuff, ie Private.
I expect good service from all the online stores. I sometimes get shitty service, and never go back (like dvdboxoffice). I good good service from ADN, I hear that 5-Star's service is as good or better.
As I said once before, the "free" dvd doesn't worry me too much since they're generally average titles that I wouldn't have bought anyway. If they were able to price-MATCH even without the extra dollar off I'd buy from them again.. Or even if their overall prices were a bit lower to make them the same on the titles I -want- to buy..
My postage situation is a little different due to my "filthy furriner" status as well..
As to have I bought since then? Yep. bought a pile of Private titles from a local Australian supplier for less than I could get them from anywhere in the states right now. A smaller selection, but until I get all the ones they have that I want, I'll live with it.. oh yes, private themselves have a couple of dvds for 19.99 on one of their websites.. and then dvdzone2 and 5-star look promising...
So I look for good service + price. If either of those factors is not there, I'll go somewhere else and stay there until something happens to make me stop buying from that supplier...
If ADN were a little cheaper on the privates and wickeds and such, I'd be back there...
